Overview and metadata sections
Emanuel Hirsch Baron was born in Novograd Volynsk, Russia on February 8, 1892. He relocated to New York City in 1913. His first job was a teacher, but by 1920, the census listed him as a rabbi. He married Tania Eugenie Brinberg (1896-1958) on June 22, 1920 and they were the parents of Israel and Bennet Baron. He died on October 5, 1974.
This collection was part of a larger gift of material relating to the Holy Land. While there are a small number of postcards in this collection documenting Mount Carmel in Israel and Jewish ceremonial objects held at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City; for the most part, these postcards represent cities in France and are not religious in nature.
This collection contains 113 postcards, largely documenting cities in France. For the most part these postcards appear to be aimed at tourists, showing art, architecture (interior and exterior), memorials, landscapes, streets, and tourist attractions. The collection is arranged in two series, I. France and II. Israel, Italy, and the United States.
Postcards within I. France are arranged in alphabetical order by city name. In addition to the cities, there are two postcards representing early and groundbreaking French aviators, Louis Paulhan (1883-1963) and Jules Vedrines (1881–1919), both of whom served in World War I. There are two postcards from Soisson showing bomb damage sustained during World War I.
Series II. Israel, Italy and the United States contains postcards from Il Monte Carmelo (Mount Carmel) in Israel, a Holy Land site; Napoli in Italy; and the Museum of Jewish Ceremonial Objects at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, New York City.
Gift of the Baron family, in memory of Emanuel H. Baron, 2013.
