John Morton was married to Mary Robinson Morton (1757-1829), who was a minister in the Society of Friends. They married in 1793 and lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

This collection is comprised of a single volume commonplace book. The volume includes a copy of the will of Edward Warton, recipes for colored dyes, and excerpts organized by topic, including solitude, Barclay's apology, and Paradise Lost.
