Pennsylvania Yearly Meeting of Progressive Friends records, 1851-1941 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection includes the minutes of the Longwood Yearly Meeting of Progressive Friends, as well as records of its Financial Association and its Representative Committee. Also included are some minutes of Kennett Monthly Meeting, from which the Longwood meeting split off beginning in the 1840s. There are detailed records of this split, including lists of the members who were disowned from Kennett Monthly Meeting for associating under the name "Progressive Friends." Minutes and letters written during this period, as well as later narrative accounts written by members, provide futher information about this split. The collection also includes many histories of the meeting, written and presented by members on the occasion of the final Yearly Meeting, which was held in 1940. A range of miscellaneous records, such as the Bible and hymnals used by the Yearly Meeting, are also included in the collection.

Helen Morris Beitler (1915-2002) was a collector of books and 18th, 19th and early 20th century ephemera. She collected trade cards, bill heads, catalogs, and other ephemera, focusing on trades and tools, children's literature, boating, advertising, Philadelphia and Pennsylvania history, and the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team. The Helen M. Beitler ephemera collection, 1728-1987, focuses on Philadelphia, sports, civic matters, and business and industry, although many other subjects are represented.

Glass plate negatives of Frank Taylor drawings, circa 1860-1926

Abstract:
Frank Hamilton Taylor (1846-1927) owned a lithography firm and served as a special artist for various newspapers and publications in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He wrote for several guidebooks and publications, but is best known for his drawings of Philadelphia published as Ever-Changing Philadelphia and Old Philadelphia in the 1910s. The Glass plate negatives of Frank Taylor drawings, circa 1860-1926, consist of nearly 250 full-plate glass negatives of sketches drawn by Taylor, mostly of building exteriors and street scenes in Philadelphia, with some sites in nearby areas.

Abstract:
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was founded in 1682 by William Penn. Because of its central location among the American colonies, Philadelphia became a gathering place for American revolutionaries during the Revolutionary War era and served as the temporary capital of the United States from 1790 to 1800. In the 19th century, Philadelphia became a major hub for railroad transportation and home to a variety of industries. As of 2014, Philadelphia is the largest city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, known for its arts, culture, and parks. The Philadelphia History Museum local history collection, circa 1682-2014, consists of a wide variety of paper materials from, or relating to, the Philadelphia region from the late 17th century to the 21st century. The collection is particularly strong in visual documentation and in printed materials, although there are also a large quantity of manuscript and other written documents. Abstract:
Plymouth Meeting (in Plymouth and Whitemarsh Townships) in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, was settled during the late 17th century by English and Welsh Quaker and German immigrants. In 1686, the discovery of limestone drew more settlers to the area. Several railroad lines were constructed in the area during the 19th century, which encouraged a growth in industry. Plymouth and Whitemarsh grew significantly after World War II, especially during the latter decades of the 20th century after completion of the Blue Route (Interstate 476) with its major interchange in Plymouth Township. The Plymouth Meeting Historical Society photograph collection, circa 1850-2002, consists of various photographs--including daguerreotypes, tintypes, ambrotypes, stereographs, film and glass negatives, and photo albums--documenting Whitemarsh and Plymouth Township local history. Potts-Rutter family papers, 1714-1936 (inclusive)

Abstract:
John Potts (1710-1768), the founder of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, was a prominent business man and ironmaster. Potts's descendants intermarried frequently with the Rutter family, and the Potts and Rutter names remained prominent in southeastern Pennsylvania. They founded several important iron furnaces and were active in politics and community life. The Potts-Rutter family papers, 1714-1936, consist of scattered original papers of Potts and Rutter family members, as well as some genealogical research. The original papers include indentures and deeds (1714-1882), correspondence, marriage certificates, and other miscellaneous documents; there is a small amount of financial records from Warwick Furnace.

Quakertown, Pennsylvania, incorporated in 1855, is a town located in the northeast portion of Upper Bucks County. The town remained quite small until the mid-nineteenth century, when the construction of the North Pennsylvania Railroad helped turn it into a significant commercial center. The Quakertown Historical Society photograph collection, circa 1865-1990, consists primarily of framed photographs, including panoramas, that depict the people and places of Quakertown. There is a large proportion of group photographs, especially Quakertown High School class and sports team photographs.

Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church records, 1816-2016

Abstract:
Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, located at 6th and Lombard Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was established as Bethel Church in 1794 by Richard Allen (1760-1830). Allen was a former slave who purchased his freedom in 1783 and preached to African Americans in various Mid-Atlantic states until settling in Philadelphia in 1786, where he became a leader of the city's African American community. Bethel and other black Methodist congregations united in 1816 to organize the African Methodist Episcopal Church in America. Allen was appointed its first bishop and Bethel Church became Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, the mother church of the denomination. As of 2016, Mother Bethel remains a prominent and progressive congregation. Its current church building, dedicated in 1890, still sits on the land purchased by Allen in the 1790s, making it the oldest parcel of real estate in the United States continuously owned by African-Americans. L. K. Burket and Brother was a fuel supply company located in Radnor Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The company began in 1887 and lasted until 2005, when it closed after several generations of family management. The L. K. Burket and Brother ledgers, 1887-1913, consist mostly of financial volumes such as daybooks and account books. There is also some correspondence and a receipt scrapbook in the collection.

Abstract:
The North Wayne Protective Association (NWPA) was organized in 1885 as a civic association. It was incorporated in 1890 and still exists as of 2014, making it the oldest continuing civic organization in the country. The NWPA was originally formed to improve the neighborhood by addressing issues such as street lighting and road paving, but over the years the Association has developed a wider range of activities for the community. The North Wayne Protective Association records, 1890-2003, contain financial and administrative records, including an almost complete set of meeting minutes; correspondence; printed materials, such as newsletters and flyers; photographs; and ephemera.

Abstract:
Radnor Township in Delaware County, Pennsylvania was founded in 1682, shortly after Welsh Quakers arrived on the lands previously home to the original inhabitants, the Lenni Lenape Indians. Development in the area increased when new transportation routes passed through the area, first the Lancaster Turnpike (the first toll road in America) in 1794, and then the Columbia (later Pennsylvania) Railroad in 1832. The township's population doubled between 1880 and 1890 with the birth of one of the country's first planned suburban developments, Wayne. Development and population boomed again in the wake of World War II and has continued to grow in the 21st century. The Radnor Historical Society manuscript collection, 1702-circa 2010, consists of a variety of original manuscript materials relating to the people, businesses, and organizations of Radnor Township and its vicinity.
