Moses Pierce correspondence with George F. White, 1839-1926 (bulk 1842-1846) (inclusive)

Abstract:
The collections contains correspondence between George F. White and Moses Pierce in which Pierce asks White to clarify his views on abolition, temperance, and peace. White does not agree with abolitionists who want an immediate end to slavery, and he thinks that Great Britain's Abolition of Slavery Act was a ill-conceived. He notes the wretched conditions of factories and mines in England and Scotland as other forms of slavery. Pierce, in copies or drafts of the letters he sent, argues that the Society of Friends should take a stand against all slavery and disputes White's statistics. While the Discipline of the Society of Friends condemned slavery, the letters reflect opposing perspectives on how to confront the problem. The collection also includes a copy of White's travel minute to Great Britain and a letter from the Howard Pierce, donor of the collection.

Balderston Family Papers, 1853-1949 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The collection contains correspondence of the family of C. Canby Balderston, a prominent Quaker and businessman. He served with the Friends Relief Service and the Relief Commission for Belgium during WWI and both of his sons, Frederick Emery Balderston and Robert W. Balderston, were COs in WWII, working as ambulance drivers. Frederick E. Balderston (1923-2007) married Judith Braude (1926-1993) in 1949. A significant part of the collection consists of her childhood and college correspondence with her parents. It particularly reflects details of Swarthmore College students life, 1942-1946. Of special interest are the letters that Canby Balderston sent to his mother from France and Belgium, 1917-1919. Also included in the collection is correspondence of C. Canby Balderston's parents, John Lloyd Balderston and Anna Elizabeth (Marshall) Balderston, Quakers of Kennett Square, Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Abstract:
Horace Mather Lippincott (1877-1967) was a Quaker editor and historian. The collection contains his speeches and writings on topics primarily concerning the Society of Friends and the history of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Of particular interest is the scrapbook he compiled in 1946 of papers and photographs of the 1913-1914 Joint Group which met weekly to study the Separation in the Society of Friends, along with other papers on the topic and on the first joint meeting of the two Philadelphia Yearly Meetings in 1946. The collection includes genealogical research by Horace Mather Lippincott and his brother George E. Lippincott, deeds, and some family papers.

Alice C. Paxson Hadley (1857-1919) was the daughter of Frederick and Lydia Betts Paxson, Philadelphia Hicksite Quakers. She was a founding member of the Thread and Needle Society, a social and charitable club of young Friends. Alice kept a diary that recorded events and meetings of the group 1873 to 1880 which were transcribed by her granddaughter, and she collected memorabilia and speeches she presented.

Abstract:
The collection is composed of correspondence of the family of David Sands Shearman and his wife, Hepsa Hathaway Howland Shearman of New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Poughkeepsie, New York. The Shearman and Howlands were prominent New England Quaker merchant and whaling families, intertwined by business and marriage. Much of the correspondence is directed to Hepsa, largely from her children who pursued a range of careers. Early correspondence is with her husband Captain David Sands Shearman, her siblings, and his relations and contains business and family information from New Bedford, MA, and Poughkeepsie, NY.

Abstract:
A Quaker poet and book reviewer, Martha Shepard Lippincott (1867-1949) was a birthright and life-long member of Moorestown Monthly Meeting, New Jersey. She graduated from Swarthmore College in 1889 and supported herself as a writer; many of her poems were published in women's, Christian, and local papers. The wide ranging themes include war and peace, temperance, nature, and love. The collection contains her manuscript poetry arranged chronologically and a small amount of her prose and miscellaneous papers.

Abstract:
Cornelia Hancock (1840-1927) was a Civil War nurse, Reconstruction-era teacher in South Carolina, and, later, Philadelphia social worker. The papers consist primarily of her letters written in the post-Civil War years, 1865-1879, when she was teaching the children of formerly enslaved people in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. The collection includes reference material used by the donor, Henrietta Stratton Jaquette, in preparation for her book South after Gettysburg which was based on Hancock's letters. The letters provide insight into the conditions and attitudes of formerly enslaved people and their former enslavers.

Abstract:
This collection is composed of the draft manuscript of the memoirs and journal of Edward Hicks and related miscellaneous papers. Included are his drafts of the first pages of the memoirs, photocopies of letters and sermons of Hicks relating to the Hicksite Separation, abolition, and Quaker spirituality. Also included are a typescript copy of Samuel Johnson's letter to Edward Hicks on slavery, the original of Hicks' responses, and a letter from Isaac Parry to Benjamin Ferris after the death of Edward Hicks concerning the publication of the memoirs.

Abstract:
The collection consists of correspondence and other papers of the Virginia Quaker family of Asa M. Janney. The letters contain family news and note Quaker concerns and activities. Of special interest are letters from Asa's older brother, Samuel M. Janney, noted Quaker minister, author and abolitionist. Also included are an account book of Janney's Forest Mills flour mill, 1860-1862; a Swarthmore College student notebook kept by his grandson, Thomas Janney Brown; and a notebook of genealogy and memoirs written by his daughter Lydia Neal Brown which includes a copy of a letter written by her sister Thamsin describing events on the Janney and Brown farms during the Civil War together with other family stories.

Robert "Tiny" Maxwell (1884-1922) was an influential college and professional football player who attended Swarthmore College from 1904-1906. In 1984, Ralph Keyes wrote an article about Maxwell for Sports Illustrated. This collection consists primarily of photocopied newspaper clippings and other research materials assembled by Ralph Keyes for his article. Of special note are a small collection of original photographs of Tiny Maxwell, from his boyhood, through his football years, and adulthood.

Anna Wharton Morris family photographs, 1823-1997 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Anna Wharton Morris was the youngest daughter of Joseph Wharton, prominent Philadelphia industrialist and philanthropist. She was a birthright member of the Society of Friends, active in prison reform and other social reform movements of her day, and was a profilic writer, primarily of short stories and essays. In 1896, she married Harrison S. Morris, Philadelphia author and arts administrator, and they had one child, Catharine Morris Wright. The photographs in this collection are related to the Anna Wharton Morris Papers, RG5/106. The photographs date from as early as 1796 but are mostly from the 1860s and onwards. The photographs are either bound in leather albums or loose. They depict the Wharton Morris family and friends.

John Woolman Manuscripts Collection, 1720-1939 (inclusive)

John Woolman (1720-1772) was one of the most influential ministers in the history of the Religious Society of Friends. He was particularly active in opposing slavery and encouraging Quakers to disavow the practice. His journal, published posthumously, is still considered an important document in the fields of religion, history, and literature. The Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College holds several versions of Woolman's manuscript journal, letters written by Woolman, and other assorted documents.

Rebecca Timbres Clark photographs, 1853-1999 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Rebecca Timbres Clark (1896-2000) was a Quaker nurse and social worker. She and her first husband, Harry Garland Timbres (1899-1937), performed relief work under the auspices of the AFSC in Eastern Europe in 1921-22 and worked with Rabindranath Tagore in Bengal, India, in 1931-34. In 1936-1937, the couple worked in the malaria unit in Soviet Russia. After Harry Timbres' death, Rebecca returned to the U.S. She married Edgar Sydenham Clark (1885-1961) on July 2, 1943, and the couple moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1947, where Rebecca worked as a medical social worker. This collection includes photographs of family and friends as well as snapshots of Russia and Poland.

Involved in this collection are Morgan Brooks (1861-1947), a professor of engineering, and his wife, Frona Marie (Brooks) Brooks (1861-1947). One of their children, Charles Franklin Brooks (1891-1958), became a member of the Society of Friends shortly after marrying Eleanor M. Stabler (1892-1986) in 1914. Their daughter, Barbara Brooks (1922-2007), married Edward H. Kerner, and she was active in Quaker concerns, particularly peace. This collection contains loose photgraphs, albums, and photos of family groups, among others.

Paul M. Pearson and Drew Pearson photographs, 1890-1938 (inclusive)

Paul M. Pearson (1871-1938) was a noted Quaker educator, editor, and speaker, a professor of Public Speaking at Swarthmore College, the first civilian governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands, an assistant director of the U.S. Housing Authority, and a leading founder and executive in the Chautauqua movement. His son, Drew Pearson (1897-1969), was a syndicated national columnist. This collection contains photographs of the following subjects mostly related to Paul M. Pearson's life and work: Swarthmore Chautauqua, Virgin Islands, Oglebay Park and Institute, Photographs for Drew Pearson Articles, and Miscellaneous (including personal photographs).

Abigail Hopper Gibbons (1801-1893) was an important figure in many of the reform movements in the middle and late nineteenth century. Like her father, Isaac T. Hopper (1771-1852), "Abby" Gibbons was an ardent abolitionist and dedicated to prison reform. This collection includes: a carte de visite album compiled by Abby Hopper Gibbons; a daguerreotype of Abby with her husband James and children; and photographs of her descendents, the Dunning family.

George A. Hoadley Family Papers, 1850-1957 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The collection contains the papers of George A. Hoadley, long-time professor of physics at Swarthmore College and secretary of the Franklin Institute, as well as papers of his extended family. Of particular interest are diaries kept by his second wife's parents, Carrie B. Kilgore and Damon Y. Kilgore, both attorneys and reformers. George Hoadley's correspondence with his children include mention of people and events in the Borough of Swarthmore and Swarthmore College. A founder of the Swarthmore College Camera Club, he was a avid amateur photographer. Approximately 2,000 of his glass negatives were preserved in the family home; they illustrate Swarthmore College and local homes and sites from circa 1899-1929.

Abstract:
The Fisher-Brinton collection contains the papers of an Irish-American and Pennsylvania family with roots in the earliest years of the Society of Friends. It includes correspondence, diaries, memoirs, photographs, scrapbooks, and other materials that reflect family and Quaker concerns, and, in particular, the Conservative branch of the Society of Friends. Abraham Fisher (1823-1909) was a member of a prominent Quaker family of Youghal County, Ireland. In 1871, he assumed a position as book-keeper for the Alexandra Colony, an English settlement on the San Javier River in rural Argentina. Unaware of the increasing violence in the region, his wife and children joined him in early 1872. In 1874 the family moved to Dymond City, North Carolina, and eventually, to Southeastern Pennsylvania. Newbold-Fox Family Papers, 1710-1960 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The collection is composed largely of property and legal papers which descended in the Quaker Newbold and Fox families of Burlington County, New Jersey, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Newbolds were among the earliest settlers and prominent landowners in West Jersey. The Fox family of Philadelphia was descended from Justinian Fox who emigrated to America in 1685. In 1796, the family purchased a number of tracts of land in western Pennsylvania from the Commonwealth. A descendant, Samuel Mickle Fox (1851-1905) was a successful estates lawyer and antiquarian with an interest in family history. He married Elizabeth Richards Newbold in 1890, and their daughter inherited the records, genealogical research, and miscellaneous papers which include some correspondence and photographs. Of special interest are the property records concerning the Cedar Swamp Tract, New Jersey.

The collection contains diaries, 1934-1982, of Marion Bonner Smith, a Quaker born in Southeastern Pennsylvania. She married Newlin R. Smith, a Tufts University professor, in 1937. Eight small 5-year diaries with daily entries which record activities such as attending Quaker meetings, committees, family events, chores and some national news. Also included are Bonner and Smith family photographs and a small number of family letters, miscellaneous memorabilia, and genealogical information.

Abstract:
The collection contains correspondence, journals, and other papers of the Robert and Elizabeth Clendenon family who served as Quaker missionaries to the Native Americans in Tunesassa, Cattaraugus County, New York, in 1812-1816 and were early settlers of Ceres, McKean County, Pennsylvania. Of special note are the diary and correspondence of Robert Clendenon. The bulk of the correspondence was received by Lydia Clendenon Chevalier and includes two letters dictated by Jacob Johnson, a member of the Seneca tribe whom she met at Tunesassa. Other letters provide insight into the lives of her unmarried sisters who struggled to make a living as teachers. The letters mention family events, Quaker and anti-slavery concerns. Also included are research material and writing compiled by Dorothy Godfrey Wayman in preparation for her articles on the Clendenon and Chevalier families.

Abstract:
Louis N. Robinson, Swarthmore College Class of 1905, was a prominent Quaker economist and penologist. On June 17, 1908, he married Caroline Hadley (1885-1946) under the care of Swarthmore Monthly Meeting. She was the daughter of Walter Hadley and Alice Paxson Hadley and a graduate of Swarthmore College, Class of 1906. The collection contains Louis Robinson's letters 1901-1908, Caroline Hadley's letters 1895-1908, and transcripts with annotations by their granddaughter, Christine Erb. The letter vividly describe student life at Swarthmore College and during Louis's graduate study in Germany as well as family, Quaker, and social concerns. Also included are photographs of the Paxson branch of the family.

There were five volunteer fire companies in the Frankford area of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the late eighteenth through late nineteenth century, the first being Frankford Fire Company, organized in 1793. Frankford Fire Company would later be reorganized into two companies in 1803, and other volunteer fire companies were established in the 1850s. In 1870, all of the volunteer fire companies in Frankford were disbanded when the city-wide Philadelphia Fire Company was established. This collection consists of several generations of Castor family papers and provides insight into the wide interest in family history and the history of Frankford and Philadelphia cultivated by noted architect Horace W. Castor. It also documents financial, real estate, and legal transactions conducted not only by Mr. Castor but by his father and grandfather as well. Historical research notes and genealogical notes, personal correspondence and wills document family relationships among the three generations of Castors represented in the collection. Besides collecting and preserving these documents, Horace W. Castor wrote several papers on subjects of local history. A copy of one of these: "A Story of Pine Street Church and Frankford Gun Powder Mill," written for The Historical Society of Frankford, March 11, 1948, is in the collection.

The Bucks County Prison was built in 1885 on Pine Street in Doylestown, Pennsylvania to relieve overcrowding at the county jail and was used for a century. James A. Michener Art Museum Archives collection of Bucks County Prison photographs and ephemera, 1880-1987, consists of photographs of the Bucks County Prison while it was in use and after it was abandoned, photographs of prison warden John Case and his family, and other materials. Pierre Pechin, a French Huguenot, came to the United States in 1754. His family were prosperous tanners who lived and worked in the Lower Merion area of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Centuries later, family members formed a group, the Descendants of Pierre Pechin, which met annually for memorial services and reunions at St. Paul's Church. In 1715, the Crooked Billet Inn was built by John Dawson in what is now known as Hatboro Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. It was a farming village that boasted one of the first rural libraries in Pennsylvania, the Union Library Company. The Millbrook Society vertical files, circa 1855-2011, is made up of materials collected and created by the Millbrook Society. The majority of files relate to local history topics, such as specific businesses and schools. Document types represented throughout the collection include newspaper clippings, photocopies of manuscript materials, pamphlets, programs, yearbooks, school ephemera, and some original manuscript materials (most of which are receipts).

Newlin Grist Mill was built in Delaware County, Pennsylvania in 1704 by Nathaniel Newlin. After changing hands and changing names several times, it was acquired by Samuel N. Hill, who operated it as Concord Flour Mills. Concord Flour Mills ceased operations in 1943, and subsequently reopened as an historic site around 1960. The Concord Flour Mills records, 1867-1941, consist mostly of financial records of Concord Flour Mills with some scattered Samuel N. Hill papers.
