Overview and metadata sections
Edward Vincent Streeper was a resident of Delaware County, Pennsylvania for most of his life and an avid local historian. He was born in 1876 in Lansdowne, and married Margaret Stinson Fields in 1903 in Media. He died in Media in 1951. Streeper was involved with the Delaware County Institute of Science, serving as the chairman of its Historical Section.
This collection consists of 28 volumes of local history research compiled by Edward V. Streeper about Delaware County, Pennsylvania. It is organized into two series. The first series, "Archives of Delaware County, Pennsylvania," consists only of newspaper clippings (dated) and research notes by Streeper, 1923-1939. They are organized into volumes by subject. The largest chunk is "Notes on Residents," containing biographical information. There are also volumes focused on local schools, taverns/cafes/restaurants, politics, and other subjects.
The second series includes some original documents--photographs, ephemera, and some manuscripts--as well as newspaper clippings and notes, and dates from 1833 to 1977. A lot of the research was done for a souvenir book on the Media Centennial in 1950 and for other purposes.
Gift of Delaware County Institute of Science, 1996.
Summary descriptive information on this collection was compiled in 2012-2014 as part of a project conducted by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to make better known and more accessible the largely hidden collections of small, primarily volunteer run repositories in the Philadelphia area. The Hidden Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archival Repositories (HCI-PSAR) was funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
This is a preliminary finding aid. No physical processing, rehousing, reorganizing, or folder listing was accomplished during the HCI-PSAR project.
In some cases, more detailed inventories or finding aids may be available on-site at the repository where this collection is held; please contact Media Historic Archives Commission directly for more information.
