Born in Lower Merion, John Levering (1789-1878) was a graduate of the University Academy and a noted mathematician and surveyor. He was the eighth headmaster of the Lower Merion Academy, and co-founded of the Lower Merion Library Company, the first public library in Lower Merion, in 1842. Levering is buried in the graveyard of the Roxborough Baptist Church.
