Mary Sullivan Patterson (1906-1987) was a Quaker historian and genealogist from Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. The manuscript of George A. Barton, entitled "The Boston Broad Brim," appears to be satirical in nature, and, according to the introduction supplied by the manuscript, "The Boston Broad Brim is published Semi-Occasionally for the benefit of the Boston Meeting. It is the official organ of the Whittier Association," and was previously called the "Highland Hall News, and was a weekly paper." This volume provides a brief satirical history of Quakers, particularly their move from Switzerland to the United States, the "Eighth Idyll of Theocrates," "The Miracle" translated from German, and a story called "The Hoag Surprise Party."

Abstract:
This volume was originally used as an account book, from 1794 to 1795, and was later repurposed as a diary or timeline of events, dated from 1826 to 1915. The section of the volume that acts as an account book includes an index, in which individuals are organized alphabetically, and entries record amounts paid or owned, the goods purchased, and the currency used. Goods listed are mainly dry goods and lumber, including: flour, "middling" (bulk goods of medium grade), hog feed, cornmeal, buckwheat, rye meal, and wooden boards. The second section of the volume acts as a timeline and diary for Joshua L. Baily. Included are entries concerning current events, such as terms of various presidents, the Orthodox-Hicksite separation, the emergence of the "Mormons" and their migration west, records of correspondence sent and received, and events in the Civil War and World War I.

The Friends' Reading Room Association was founded in 1835, and dissolved in 1842. Its Constitution, included in the minutes, states its purpose: "An Institution in a central part of the city, which shall be furnished with a judcious selection of books, maps and periodical publications, calculated to promote moral and religous improvement, a knowledge of the principles and history of the Society of Friends and an acquiantance with the arts, science and general literature." This volume contains the minutes of the Friends' Reading Room Association, from 1835 - 1842, from the organization of the association, until its resolution and a register of members of the Western District Monthly Meeting, Philadelphia, from 1814 - 1886.
