Overview and metadata sections

Walter Hinchman (1845-1920) was born July 25, 1845, near Doylestown, Pennsylvania, the son of Morgan and Margaretta S. Hinchman. He was educated at Quaker boarding schools in Ohio, and attended Earlham College in Indiana. In 1861, he enlisted in the Northern forces during the Civil War. He worked in a machine shop in Cincinnati, and in 1866, a machine shop in Philadelphia. He also worked as a draftman for Jonathan Dunn in Washington, D.C. and for the Patent Office. In 1867, he joined a surveying expedition to St. Louis. After the expedition was over, he returned to the east coast via Panama, and settled in New York City. He published a single book, entitled, "Sketches and Poems," using materials from his travels. He died in June, 1920, in New York City.

This collection is comprised of the papers of Walter Hinchman. Three of the items are biographical manuscripts, including a tribute read at his funeral; there are also two letters by Hinchman, one directed to his uncle, Joseph W. Taylor, and another to his cousin, Sarah Thomas. Also included are two drawings by Hinchman.
