The Peace Studies Association (PSA) was formed in 1987, when fifteen directors and representatives of existing college and university peace studies programs met at Colgate University to identify needs of faculty in peace studies and areas of cooperation among programs. The PSA worked to cooperate with organizations and individuals concerned with peace studies and the development of a more peaceful world. The PSA merged with the Consortium on Peace Research, Education and Development (COPRED) in 2002 to form the Peace and Justice Studies Association.

Abstract:
The World Conference on Religion and Peace (WCRP) is an international organization of representatives of the world's major religious traditions who meet to study and act upon global problems affecting peace, justice, and human survival. Five world conferences have been held (Kyoto, 1970; Louvain, 1974; Princeton, 1979; Nairobi, 1984; and Melbourne, 1989) as well as numerous regional assemblies. From 1970-1984, the international headquarters in New York was directed by Homer A. Jack, Secretary-General. The headquarters was moved to Geneva, Switzerland in 1984, with John B. Taylor as Secretary-General. The collection includes meeting minutes (1970-1987); correspondence (1968-1984); WCRP publications, reports, press releases, financial records, Homer Jack's notes and memoranda on meetings, photographs and sound tape recordings. Anna Melissa Graves was a writer, teacher, world traveler, and internationalist. From the 1920s to the 1940s Graves traveled through Africa, Central and South America, China, Europe, and the Middle East. She taught school in many of these places and maintained a voluminous correspondence with the teachers, acquaintances, and former students she met on her travels.

Hannah Clothier Hull Papers, 1889-1958 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Hannah Clothier Hull (1872-1958), was one of the founders of the Woman's Peace Party and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. She served as a national officer of the WILPF for nearly forty years. Hull was also active in other social reform movements. A member of a well-to-do Quaker family, Hannah Clothier graduated from Swarthmore College in 1891. She first worked at a Philadelphia settlement house and then entered the graduate program in social work at Bryn Mawr College. In the following year Hannah Clothier married William Isaac Hull, a fellow pacifist and professor of political science at Swarthmore. Hannah Clothier Hull worked in the woman suffrage campaign and women's rights, had some interest in temperance, was a member of the Friends Peace Committee of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, and was on the board of the American Friends Service Committee (1928-1947).

Abstract:
Bulk of the collection is in printed or mimeographed form, with some typed or photocopied items also present. Included are pamphlets, tracts, leaflets, articles and reprints, reports, speeches, statements, form letters, announcements and papers relating to conferences and other meetings, and clippings. The collection was microfilmed in 1979. In 2003, a large amount of material duplicated elsewhere in the Peace Collection was removed, so that the material in the boxes no longer corresponds to the material on the microfilm. Primary source material was transferred to the appropriate record group in Friends Historical Library. Founded in 1967 as Business Executives Move for Vietnam Peace; objectives were to press for practical steps toward ending American participation in the Vietnamese Conflict, to use the business community's influence in expanding public support for disengagement, and to emphasize the war's adverse effect on the economy; name of the organization was changed in 1970 to Business Executives Move for Vietnam Peace and New National Priorities, later (1973) shortened to Business Executives Move for New National Priorities. Henry E. Niles served as co-chairman of BEM with Harold Willens from 1967 to January 1969 and continued as chairman until the organization disbanded in 1982; successor organization: Business Executives for National Security, Inc.

Abstract:
In 1902, Edwin Ginn began publication of an International Library to promote knowledge about peace. In July 1910, he established the International School of Peace which, in December, became the World Peace Foundation. Its purpose was to promote better international relations and world order by preparing and distributing specialized literature, mostly to college and university libraries, and by holding conferences. It was closely allied with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and supported formation of the League of Nations and the Permanent Court of International Justice and, later, the United Nations.

Abstract:
Homer A. Jack (1916-1993) was a Unitarian Universalist clergyman and denominational official who sought to apply religious values to national and international affairs. Jack was executive secretary of the Chicago Council Against Racial and Religious Discrimination (1943-1948), executive director of SANE (1960-1964), and secretary general of the World Conference on Religion and Peace (1970-1983). He had been minister of churches in Lawrence, Kansas (1942-1943), Evanston, Illinois (1948-1959), and Winnetka, Illinois (1984-1987) and served as director of the Division of Social Responsibility of the Unitarian Universalist Association (1964-1970). Jack also chaired the NGO Committee on Disarmament (at UN Headquarters) from 1973-1984. Homer Jack "retired" to Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, in Januaryuary 1987. Abstract:
E. Raymond Wilson (1896-1987), a Quaker peace lobbyist, helped found the Friends Committee on National Legislation in 1943 and served as its Executive Secretary until 1962. He also helped organize the Committee on Militarism in Education in 1925. From 1931 to 1943, he served as Field and Education Secretary of the Peace Section of the American Friends Service Committee. He was the author of two books. The papers of E. Raymond Wilson contain personal and professional correspondence, biographical material, writings including drafts for two books, notes on travel, program of meetings and conferences he attended, a subject file, photographs, scrapbooks, sound tapes, and memorabilia. Promoting Enduring Peace was founded in 1952, with headquarters in Woodmont, Connecticut. Principles of the organization included: peace with freedom and justice for all, support for the United Nations, and belief in religion as the fundamental force for righteousness. Today PEP's mission is to conduct peace education promoting the advent of a harmonious planetary commonwealth through the convergence of the worldwide movements for disarmament, social justice, and environmental stewardship as the foundation of sustainable peace; through education and citizen diplomacy. The PEP established the Gandhi Peace Award.

Dorothy H. Hutchinson Papers, 1942-1980 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Dorothy Hewitt Hutchinson (l905-l984) began to gain influence in the peace movement when her pamphlet A Call to Peace Now was printed by the Friends in l943. That summer, Hutchinson and a small group of people started the Peace Now Movement, using her pamphlet to rally support for the principle of a negotiated settlement rather than unconditional surrender of the Axis powers. This group included George W. Hartmann, a psychology professor at Columbia, and John Collett. Hutchinson also worked to promote the United Nations and helped organize a local chapter of the United World Federalists Hutchinson was active in the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and became president of the U.S. Section of WILPF in l96l, serving until l965. She then served as chairman of International WILPF from l965 until l968. Hutchinson was an activist in civil rights and civil liberties as well as in the peace movement.

Abstract:
WIN Magazine was started in January 1966 by the New York Workshop in Nonviolence, a New York City pacifist direct action group which functioned as an affiliate of both the Committee for Nonviolent Action and the War Resisters League. In September 1966 full title of the magazine became WIN Peace and Freedom through Nonviolent Action. WIN solicited articles and poetry promoting many liberal and radical causes including disarmament, draft resistance, war tax refusal, and other pacifist concerns as well as civil rights, women's liberation, and environmental protection. It supported nonviolence as the only way to resolve differences between individuals or groups. The last issue of the magzine was published in October 1983.

CCCO developed a nationwide network of military and draft counselors and attorneys to assist conscientious objectors. Most active during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, the CCCO promoted such issues as amnesty, repatriation, and counter-recruitment.Operations were suspended in late October 2009. As of 2010, some of their counseling service has been taken over by the GI Rights Hotline.

Ann Morrissett Davidon and William C. Davidon Papers, 1949- (inclusive)

Abstract:
Ann Morrissett Davidon (1925-2004), was a writer, editor, educator, pacifist and peace activist through her entire life. William Cooper Davidon(1927- 2013), was a professor of physics at Haverford College and (retired 1994), pacifist, peace activist. The two were married in 1963 and both continued to be very active in peace, pacifist, anti-Vietnam War, and social justice organizations. They advocated and practiced war-tax resistance. In 1971, William Davidon was named an "unindicted co-conspirator" in a plot to kidnap Henry Kissenger. Ann Davidon remained active in peace issues for her entire life.

Fannie Fern Phillips Andrews founded the American School Peace League (which changed its name to the American School Citizenship League in 1919). She was also a founding member of the Woman's Peace Party, and was one of the delegates to the International Committee of the International Congress of Women at The Hague in 1915. She was appointed by President Roosevelt to serve as a delegate to international conferences on education in 1934 and 1936.

Heloise Brainerd was connected with the Pan American Union in Washington, D.C. from 1909 to 1935. In 1935 Brainerd became the chair of the Committee on the Americas, and chair of the Division of Inter-American Work, for the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. Brainerd's goal was to draw women from Latin America into the peace movement, and to do this she traveled widely in the Americas. Brainerd was made Honorary Vice President of the U.S. Section of the WILPF in 1954.

Friends Coordinating Committee on Peace Collected Records, 1951-1987 (inclusive)

Abstract:
By 1951, it was agreed that the Friends Coordinating Committee on Peace was strictly a consultative and coordinating group for the peace efforts of Yearly Meetings and such Quaker entities as the American Friends Service Committee, the Friends Committee on National Legislation, the Friends World Committee for Consultation, the Peace and Social Order Committee of the Friends General Conference, and the Friends Peace Committee of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. The annual meeting of the FCCP gave Quakers an opportunity to spend a day together sharing experiences and making proposals for cooperative projects. In 1986 it was decided that the role of the FCCP was no longer viable and was being taken over by other agencies, so that it was disbanded.

Abstract:
Belva Ann McNall Lockwood (1830-1917), was the first woman attorney to practice before the Supreme Court. She personally lobbied members of Congress to pass a special act admitting women to the bar of the Court, and first practiced before the Court in 1879. Lockwood ran for the U.S. presidency in 1884 and 1888, being the first woman to have a complete, national campaign for that office. From the 1870s onward Lockwood was active with the radical peace group, the Universal Peace Union, representing the organization at several international peace congresses.

Bradford Lyttle Papers, 1954- (inclusive)

Abstract:
Bradford [Brad] Lyttle is a long time leading peace activist involved in the promotion of nonviolence for social change and the elimination of war and nuclear weapons. Lyttle was the organizer of the San Francisco to Moscow walk in the 1960-1961, to highlight the message of disarmament and nonviolent resistance and bringing together U.S. and Soviet citizens together during the height of the Cold War. He went on to organize and participate in other marches and protests, including the Quebec - Washington - Guantanamo Walk for Peace, during which he and twenty other marchers were jailed by police in Albany, Georgia. During the Vietnam war Lyttle coordinated many organizations and demonstrations against the war. In 1983 he founded the United States Pacifist Party and ran for president in the 1984 elections. A.J. Muste Papers, 1920-1967 (inclusive)

Abstract:
A.J. Muste (1885-1967), was ordained a minister in the Dutch Reformed Church, but later (1917), he became a member of the Society of Friends. During World War I, Muste's refusal to abandon his pacifist position led to his forced resignation from the Central Congregational Church in Newtonville, Massachusetts. Muste's involvement as a labor organizer began in 1919 when he led strikes in the textile mills of Lawrence, Massachusetts. He became the director of the Brookwood Labor College in Katonah, New York, remaining there until 1931. He then served as national chairman of the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR) from 1926 to 1929. Muste was director of the Presbyterian Labor Temple from 1937-1940. In 1940 he became executive director of the FOR, a position he held until his retirement in 1953, when he was made director emeritus. The People's Coalition for Peace and Justice was founded in 1970 as National Coalition Against War, Racism, and Repression and organized several specific campaigns including People's Peace Treaty, Citizen's Action Pledge, and Nixon Eviction campaign; reports, speeches, and resolutions pertaining to the Assembly for Peace and Independence of the People of Indochina held at Versailles, France, February 1972.

Wilhelm Söllmann Papers, 1901-1991 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Friedrich Wilhelm Sollmann (1881-1951), German labor leader, journalist, and Reichminister. Exiled from Germany in 1933, Sollmann sought refuge in the United States and eventually became an American citizen, adopting William F. Sollmann as his preferred form of address. Sollmann was a member of the German delegation to the Versailles Peace Treaty conference and he served as a representative to the Constitutional National Assembly at Weimar. In 1920 Sollmann was elected to the first of his eight terms in the Reichstag where he was to be a prominent member of the committee on foreign affairs. Sollmann's career as a lecturer and advisor on Germany and international affairs commenced in 1937 and continued until the time of his death.

AMP closed its offices in January 1986.

Henry Joel Cadbury Papers, 1917-1974 (inclusive)

Henry J. Cadbury (1883-1974) was a distinguished Biblical scholar, teacher, and a member of the Society of Friends. Cadbury was one of the founders of the American Friends Service Committee. He served as its chairman from both 1928 to 1934 and again from 1944 to 1960. Cadbury supervised famine relief both in the United States and in Europe.

The Student Peace Union was founded at the University of Chicago in 1959. It was an intercollegiate student group whose members believed that neither war nor the threat of war could any longer be successfully used to settle international disputes.

Dispatch News Service International (DNSI), was formed in Saigon in 1968 by Michael Morrow and other free-lance writers to give Westerners a deeper understanding of the people, problems, and cultures of Asia. The Washington, D.C. office opened 1969 and focused on news of Indochina, Southeast and East Asia, and Latin America. DNSI suspended operations March 1973.

Lawrence Scott was a construction engineer, Baptist clergyman, and Quaker activist. He worked as an activist against the testing of nuclear weapons and biological weapons research. He was the supervisor for the Friends Mississippi Project, project director of the Appeal and Vigil at Fort Detrick in Maryland, executive secretary of the Peace Action Center and a founder of A Quaker Action Group.

Peoples Mandate to Governments to End War was an international campaign begun on September 6, 1935, by the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom to express such overwhelming opposition to war that governments would not dare resort to it as a means of solving disputes between nations. By the end of the decade the Peoples Mandate became an independent organization, headed by Mabel Vernon, and focused on peace and connections between women and women's organizations in the Americas.

Young Friends of North America Committee on Conscription Records, 1968-1971 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Young Friends of North America, an open fellowship of Friends between the ages of 18 and 30, established a Committee on Conscription in the fall of 1968 to facilitate communication among Friends who were involved with draft resistance. The Committee, chaired by C.O. Peter Blood, collected information from members of the Religious Society of Friends who had refused to cooperate with conscription since the 1940s, as well as Friends who were currently imprisoned for draft resistance. Besides Peter Blood, David Morrison and Gary Stewart also seemed to have been involved in keeping the Committee active.

Abstract:
[Anna] Ruth Fry was an activist and a writer born into a prominent Quaker family in England. From 1914-1924, she served as general secretary of the Friends Relief Commission, which provided help for refugees and others ravaged by World War I. Fry wrote about her experiences in A Quaker Adventure (1926). She was also the first chairman of the Russian Famine Relief Fund in 1921. Fry went on to write numerous books, pamphlets and tracts, on a variety of Quaker and peace topics. She died on April 26, 1962.
