Khalil A. Totah and Eva Marshall Totah papers, 1896-1955 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The papers revolve around three topics and provide a picture of Quakers in Palestine in the 20th century: Khalil A. Totah, his second wife, Eva Marshall Totah and his first wife, Ermina Jones Totah. Khalil Totah discusses the situation in Palestine, primarily in the 1930s, and speaks of his own life and aspirations, as when he became a Quaker minister. His diaries expand the picture, adding information about Friends Boys School in Ramallah (Palestine) and his understanding of the political situation, again primarily in the 1930s. The photographs add the dimension of geography, placing Totah at Oak Grove Seminary, Clark College, the Institute of Arab American Affairs, and at the Friends School in Ramallah. The papers of Ermina Jones Totah portray an earnest and dedicated teacher and wife, but carry little detail. Eva Marshall Totah has the largest quantity of correspondence, primarily 1920s and 1930s. John B. Garrett (1836-1924) was an original member of the Associated Executive Committee of Friends on Indian Affairs. Topics discussed include appointment of agents, missionary work, education and citizenship of Indigenous Americans, use of military force, annuity goods, opening of Indigenous territory to settlement by white people, etc. Includes minutes of the 1871 committee meeting, letter of Garrett to his family telling of a 1865 visit to Fort Smith, Arkansas, as part of the "Grand Indian Council," as well as 17 photographs of indigenous Americans present at the Council and printed reports of the meetings.

Abstract:
Papers include correspondence of thirty-two members and relatives of the Hartshorne family. -Of special interest are the medical notes, articles, and correspondence, 1819-1845, of Joseph Hartshorne, M.D. These are noteworthy because of his many innovation in surgery, such as the use of animal ligatures, plus his detailed descriptions of treatments for various ailments. -The correspondence of Anna C. Hartshorne covering her missionary work in Japan -Henry Hartshorne's "Letters from Japan," printed in the Friend Review, 1893-1894, plus sermons, etc., given by him while in Japan with Anna, 1893-1897. -The bulk of the collection consists of the correspondence, medical papers, literary works, etc., of Henry Hartshorne, M.D., son of Joseph and father of Anna. -also include genealogical material on the Bonsall, Hartshorne, Saunders, Yarnall, and Cope families as well as photographs.

Abstract:
The papers of Greek Classicist, Levi Arnold Post, 1889-1971, who spent most of his career teaching and writing at Haverford College as a professor of Greek. He was a prolific correspondent and most of the collection contains his correspondence, primarily with his peers, though there are some early letters to his mother, as well as letters by his sister, Amy, also to her mother. Known for his work on Plato, he was a scholar of Menander, a concentration reflected in his correspondence and prolific writing. The collection also includes some of his works in typescript and manuscript, as well as some of his lectures.

This collection focuses on the personal and professional life of Christopher Darlington Morley. Morley was a professor's son, and he began writing for pleasure very early in life. This collection includes material from his academic career, at Haverford College, and as a Rhodes scholar at Oxford University, which consists primarily of notebooks and essays. The bulk of the collection, however, focuses on Morley's professional creative writing, including newspaper columns, essays, novels, lectures, and poetry. Abstract:
Papers of the Cope family whose members descended from or were forebears of Francis R. Cope Jr. (1878-1962). The bulk of the papers was created by Francis R. Cope Jr., his daughter, Theodora Morris Cope and her first husband, John Frederick Stanwell-Fletcher. Other principal writers in the collection are Alexis T. Cope, Agnes Cope, Anna S. Cope, Caroline Cope, Clementine Cope, Elizabeth S. Cope, and Evelyn Cope, all from the 19th and 20th century. The earlier Copes were Quakers, but some joined other Protestant denominations.

Abstract:
James Wood (1839-1925) was "interested in education, philanthropy, in the various branches of agriculture, in archaeology, history, Indian lore, anthropology, science, in prison reform and above all, in the Bible and religion," (ABS, 2). He was also a business man, serving as President of the Genesee Salt Company in Piffard, New York. The James Wood papers are divided into twelve series: "Biographical Material:" "Agriculture;" Business and Financial Material;" "Collected Quaker Material;" "Correspondence;" "Hugh Barbour Writings and Talks regarding James Wood;" "Journals;" "Organizations;" "Photographs and Albums;" "Political Involvement;" Prison Reform;" and lastly, "Writings by James Wood." Abstract:
The Taylor and Nicholson family papers contain the records of these two families from the late-nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries. The two focal points of this collection are William Nicholson Taylor (1882-1945), and his mother, Rebecca Morgan Nicholson Taylor (1857-1944). William graduated from Harvard in 1903 and afterwards spent considerable time abroad studying architecture. He also served as an officer in the United States Military from 1916 to 1917, and worked in diplomacy after the war. Rebecca was a noted writer and poet during this time period. The strength of this collection is the collected materials related to William's time in the military, as well as his sketchbooks related to architecture and Harvard. Researchers interested in the works of Rebecca Morgan Nicholson Taylor or Quaker women, should also consult Rebecca's notebook and correspondence. There is extensive correspondence between the various members of these two families from the 1880s to 1940s.

The Reinhardt, Hawley, Hewes and Meredith families are tied together through marriage and their Quaker faith across multiple generations. William Dell Reinhardt, a University of Pennsylvania graduate and doctor, married Rebecca Hawley, a teacher. They had six children: Jesse Hawley Reinhardt, Mary Bailey Reinhardt, Esther Meredith Reinhardt, Lydia Ludwig Reinhardt, Elizabeth Christina Reinhardt, and David Jones Reinhardt. David Jones Reinhardt married Anna Margaret Hewes in 1896. These individuals created the bulk of the material contained within this collection. Bowles family correspondence, 1922-1960 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Bowles family was deeply involved with Quaker missionary and relief work during the 20th century. In 1900, the Bowles moved to Japan under the auspices of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and managed the Friends School and established the Tokyo Friends Center. During World War II, the Bowles family moved to Hawaii and worked with war refugees. The Bowles family correspondence consists of correspondence from Gilbert and Minnie Pickett Bowles to their son Gordon Townsend Bowles from 1922 to 1932 and to Gordon Townsend and Jane T. Bowles from 1932 to 1960. This correspondence is essentially family correspondence, but also includes information regarding the Bowles' Quaker relief work, their views on Quakerism and their day-to-day activities.

Harold J. Chance (1898-1975) worked for peace education through the American Friends Service Committee, the Peace Caravans, the Youth Section of the Emergency Peace Campaign, the Institute of International Relations, and the Friends Peace Service from 1934-1964. Included in the Harold Chance papers are correspondence, journals, writings, mailings, reports, and materials on the Friends Peace Service. Also included are Harold Haines Brinton's (1884-1973) lectures and course notes on topics such as history and religion, mysticism in various religions, religion and social change, and the philosophy of pacifism. Researchers will find this collection is especially rich in Quaker history, specifically relating to the discussion of the use of the Quaker voice by individual Friends' groups, in the mid 1950's.

Abstract:
This collection consists primarily of the publications of conscientious objectors (COs) working at Civilian Public Service (CPS) camps in the United States during World War II, performing "work of national importance" in lieu of combat. Camps were established for various purposes, from firefighting in the rural West to caring for mental patients and the elderly. The publications cover areas across the United States, although are focused in the Northeast, Upper Midwest, and California. Two publications appear to be from outside the United States. Publications range from the basic to the elaborate and cover all aspects of the lives of COs-- the mundane as well as the profound. Many publications intermittently published tables of all men who were in that specific camp at the time, or of all men who had passed through the camp. Howard Haines Brinton and Anna Shipley Cox Brinton were 20th-century Quaker educators and prolific authors whose areas of expertise included the physical sciences and the Classics. Notably, they also worked for the American Friends Service Committee in Europe, for Friends Center in Tokyo, Japan, and as directors of Pendle Hill, an adult study center in Wallingford, PA. Abstract:
Stephen G. Cary graduated from Germantown Friends School in 1933 and from Haverford College in 1937. He earned a master's degree in international administration from Columbia University in 1943. Between 1946 and 1969, Cary worked for the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), and was the chairman of the AFSC from 1979 to 1991. Cary was a member of the Haverford College Board of Managers from 1955 to 1969. In 1969, he joined the staff as vice president of development. He was acting president of Haverford from 1977 to 1978, and served as senior vice president of the College from 1979 to 1981. This is a collection of his professional and personal papers. This collection includes information about multiple generations of the Elkinton and Waring families. It is concentrated on two generations: firstly, that of Howard West Elkinton (1892-1955) and Katharine Wistar Mason Elkinton (1892/3-1961), his wife, and secondly, that of their daughter, Theodora Elkinton (1927-) who married Thomas Waring (1921-2001). It is a story of life choices made by these Quakers: for Howard and Katharine Elkinton, to serve under the American Friends Service Committee in Europe after World War I and during World War II providing relief aid, and for Theodora and Tom Waring to continue this tradition by serving in Finland after World War II and then in the field of education in the United States.

John Davison was a prolific composer who taught music at Haverford College from 1959 until his death in 1999. This volume is a yearbook from the class of 1924, with images and clippings inside pertaining to their class reunions and the activities of John F. Headly. This book was brought to their 35th and 40th reunions and autographed. Annotations were also added to the book up until 1983, indicating which of the members of that class had passed away. For some of the alumni, a picture of them from these reunions was taped above their photo from 1924 in the yearbook. The scrapbook also includes correspondence and photographs from these reunions. There are also notes inside the yearbook when Headly is mentioned, including the story of how he met his wife, Dorothy Folwell Irwin Headly.

The collection consists of six items, four of which are booklets and two of which are sets of photos. The booklets include a handbook presented to freshmen in September 1936 by Haverford College's Student Association, of which Stephen Cary was a chairman; a booklet describing Haverford's aims and characteristics from 1879; the Haverford Athletic Annual Class book from 1900; and a booklet called "Continuation of Short History of '37" from 1942, which lists the members of the class of 1937 and their post-college accomplishments and paths. The photos in the collection are photos of Stephen Cary with various sports teams at Haverford in the late 1980s and early 1990s and a photo from a reunion of the class of 1937 taken in front of Roberts Hall, presumably 5 or 10 years after their graduation.
