Overview and metadata sections
The Friends Historical Association was founded in 1873 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with the mission of studying, preserving, and publishing material related to the history and legacy of Quakerism. In addition to meeting annually in Philadelphia, the Friends Historical Association produces a semi-annual publication containing articles on historical Quaker events as well as contemporary Quaker contributions to matters such as social justice, education, and diplomacy.

The Friends Historical Association records contain meeting minutes, correspondence, financial statements, information concerning the Conference for Quaker Historians and Archivists, details about various committes within the association, publications and publicity, events, and miscellaneous materials. The collection spans from 1873, the year that the Friends Historical Association was founded, and 2012.
Records are arranged chronologically within nine series. Box 50 contains all legal sized materials.

Collection Inventory
This series includes minutes and related materials such as brief correspondence and materials relating directly to the minutes. These minutes are from Board of Directors meetings and the annual fall event. Board meetings are held three times a year, with a fourth annual meeting and event for members held in late fall. The minute book for the Friends Historical Society is also included in this series (1909-1934).

This series contains correspondence, predominately correspondence to/from editors of the Bulletin or Quaker History, the office manager of Friends Historical Association, and various presidents of the organization. This series also contains correspondence with some organizations with which Friends Historical Association did business, such as printers and bookstores. This series is arranged chronologically, except in cases when original order was alphabetical. In these cases, the folders are arranged chronologically according to the first folders in the alphabet (folder containing the letter "A").

This series contains financial materials, including balance books, check receipt books, account balance sheets, returned checks, financial receipts, reports to the treasurer, ledger sheets, budgets, various statements. This series also includes minor correspondence related to a Xerox/UMI agreement. Of particular interest may be the treasurer reports, and materials related to the "Help US Grow New Members" campaign from 1996.

This series contains materials related to the biennial Conference for Quaker Historians and Archivists. The conference is held at various Quaker colleges and universities across the United States and Canada. The materials in this series include correspondence, paper proposals from various years, paper proposals, registrant lists, papers (1996-2010), responses to papers (1998, 2000), business meeting minutes, miscellaneous materials, and program and registration information. This information includes schedules, programs, program letters, and often information about the college or university at which the meeting was held. The correspondence includes general correspondence, such as invitations to submitting papers to the conference or for attending the conference, as well as some planning committee correspondence. All information is not available for all conferences, review the folder list for more information.

Friends in the Delaware Valley: Philadelphia Yearly Meeting 1681-1981 was edited by John Moore, published in 1981 by Friends Historical Association. The book had many contributors who were Directors of Friends Historical Association, including Margaret Hope Bacon, Edwin Bronner, Barbara Curtis, J. William Frost, Herbert M. Hadley, Mary Hoxie Jones, Arthur J. Meekel, Milton Ream, and Elizabeth Gray Vining. This subseries includes materials regarding the process of publishing this book. It includes correspondence, manuscript drafts, and reports, among other materials.

The Association holds two stated meetings each year, an annual meeting in November in Philadelphia, and a historical pilgrimage in the spring to some region associated with the history of Quakerism. The spring meeting is typically held in May, however it was often held in the summer, or another event was held in the summer. See subseries for more information.
