Mary Williams Shoemaker (1861-1953) was a Quaker philanthropist from Germantown, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Franklin and Mary (Williams) Shoemaker. The collection contains chiefly journals (1934-1945) and correspondence (1914-1953) relating to Shoemaker's support of Quaker historical, educational, and social service agencies; together with correspondence of her brother, Thomas Howard Shoemaker (1851-1936), relating to his historical interests and civic activities. Includes deeds and business papers relating to Shoemaker family properties in Philadelphia and Pike County.

Abstract:
This volume was originally used as an account book, from 1794 to 1795, and was later repurposed as a diary or timeline of events, dated from 1826 to 1915. The section of the volume that acts as an account book includes an index, in which individuals are organized alphabetically, and entries record amounts paid or owned, the goods purchased, and the currency used. Goods listed are mainly dry goods and lumber, including: flour, "middling" (bulk goods of medium grade), hog feed, cornmeal, buckwheat, rye meal, and wooden boards. The second section of the volume acts as a timeline and diary for Joshua L. Baily. Included are entries concerning current events, such as terms of various presidents, the Orthodox-Hicksite separation, the emergence of the "Mormons" and their migration west, records of correspondence sent and received, and events in the Civil War and World War I.

This collection is comprised of the single volume letterbook of the Hoskins family. The primary correspondents in the volume are members of the Hoskins family, though quite a number of the letters are directed to Benjamin H. Warder. Most of the letters were written in the 18th century, but some are from the 19th century. The Allinson family scrapbook is largely comprised of clippings on poetry, temperance, prison reform, reform for juvenile delinquents, and anti-slavery. Many of the anti-slavery clippings discuss the possibility of using Jamaica as a "home for colored emigrants." The end of the volume includes 12 pages of signatures. The volume also includes an obituary for Samuel Allinson.

Elizabeth U. Willis's scrapbook includes photos and clippings about her and Sarah F. Letter writers include Samuel Fothergill, Anne Mott, David Sands, William Allinson, William Dillywn, William Rickman, J. Stephenson, George Jones, Lindley Murray, Richard Mott, and John Barrow. Confederate money, fractional currency, colonial money, excerpts of prayers and testimonies, and embroidery and cross stitch samples are also included.

Friends' Reading Room Association records, 1835-1886

The Friends' Reading Room Association was founded in 1835, and dissolved in 1842. Its Constitution, included in the minutes, states its purpose: "An Institution in a central part of the city, which shall be furnished with a judcious selection of books, maps and periodical publications, calculated to promote moral and religous improvement, a knowledge of the principles and history of the Society of Friends and an acquiantance with the arts, science and general literature." This volume contains the minutes of the Friends' Reading Room Association, from 1835 - 1842, from the organization of the association, until its resolution and a register of members of the Western District Monthly Meeting, Philadelphia, from 1814 - 1886.

The Free Produce Assocation of Friends of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting was a Quaker organization, founded in 1845 in Philadelphia, PA. The free produce association was a boycott movement against "produce," anything produced by slave labor. This collection contains the minutes from 1845 - 1852, from the Free Produce Association of the Friends of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. The minutes contain finance reports, nominations for officiers, and reports from various committees, including reports from a committee delegated to be in correspondence with Quakers in England doing similar work.
