Abstract:

Sarah Frances Smiley was a Quaker minister. Her diary entries describe Quaker meetings, ongoing struggles with her religious conviction, and her dedication to God.

Sarah Frances Smiley was born in Vassalboro, Maine. She was brought up among Quakers, became convinced, and joined the Friends at an unknown date. In 1866, she was recorded a minister. Smiley wrote an evangelical essay, "Who is He? An appeal to those who regard with any doubt the name of Jesus. . ." in 1868. She withdrew from Friends, resigned her membership, and received water baptism in New York in 1872, though she did not join another denomination. Sarah Frances Smiley died in 1917, at about 87.
