Sarah Frances Smiley was born in Vassalboro, Maine. She was brought up among Quakers, became convinced, and joined the Friends at an unknown date. In 1866, she was recorded a minister. Smiley wrote an evangelical essay, "Who is He? An appeal to those who regard with any doubt the name of Jesus. . ." in 1868.
