Abstract:
This collection contains photographs, notes and interpretations of multiple aerial mapping projects conducted over the city of Philadelphia. The largest of the “Aerial maps” series (1981-1982) contains two linear feet of black and white photos which are the result of a major Fairmount Park Commission mapping project undertaken between 1981 and 1983. The survey was performed by Aerial Data Reproduction Associates, Incorporated. This series contains visual documentation of East and West Fairmount Park, Wissahickon Valley Park, Pennypack Park, Cobb’s Creek Park and Tacony Creek Park. The series contains both positive and negative images. The photos are accompanied by three binders of analytical aero-triangulation data and field notes.

Greek American Heritage Museum photograph collection, circa 1900-2000s (bulk circa 1900-1960s)

Abstract:
The Greek American Heritage Society was founded in 2002 to preserve and promote Hellenic culture and to reconnect youth and adults to their Greek heritage. In 2013 the Society established the Greek American Heritage Museum in the historic Saint George's Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Philadelphia. The Greek American Heritage Museum photograph collection, circa 1900-2000s (bulk circa 1900-1960s), contains mostly photographs, negatives, and prints depicting Greek American school children, war heroes, and dancers in folk costumes. There are also scrapbooks which document travel abroad to Greece, Cyprus, and Istanbul.

Foerderer and Tonner family papers, circa 1870-1970

Abstract:
The Foerderer family was prominent in the Philadelphia area and well known for their self-named leather manufacturing and tanning business. The family resided at Glen Foerd beginning in 1893 after purchasing it from the Macalester family. A large portion of the records in the Foerderer and Tonner family papers, circa 1870-1970, are financial in nature and range from 1896 to 1946. There is also a span of subject files which include primarily correspondence and receipts pertaining to the maintenance of the estate. A highlight of this collection are papers of Florence Tonner, who was an avid art collector.

The Philadelphia, Germantown and Norristown Rail Road Company, one of the first railroads in the Philadelphia area, was incorporated in 1831 and liquidated in the late 1970s. The PG&N became part of the Reading Railroad system under lease in 1869 and became the Reading's primary entrance for passenger trains into Philadelphia. The Philadelphia, Germantown, and Norristown Rail Road Company records, 1831-1981, include executive business records, financial records, and stock records. Germantown and Mount Airy are neighborhoods in the northwest section of Philadelphia which underwent dramatic demographic change, from nearly all Caucasian to significantly African-American, over the course of the 20th century. During the early 1990s, the Germantown Historical Society, in conjunction with other groups, conducted three oral history projects. The Germantown Historical Society oral history projects, circa 1992-1993, contains about 140 tapes of interviews, as well as some transcripts, interviewee data sheets, and other associated documents. The three oral history projects focused on the topics of Integration in West Mount Airy, African-Americans in Germantown between the World Wars, and Awbury Arboretum.

Abstract:
Germantown, a neighborhood in the northwest section of Philadelphia, was the site of several nationally significant events. It was settled in the late 1600s by Mennonite and Quaker German-speaking emigrants and incorporated as a borough in 1689. Germantown is sometimes called the home of the American anti-slavery movement; the first organized protest against slavery in the Americas was begun by four members of the Germantown Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in 1688. In 1777, the courage displayed by American troops at the Battle of Germantown helped to spur the French to assist the United States in the Revolutionary War. During the yellow fever outbreak of 1793, government officials escaping the epidemic in Philadelphia relocated to Germantown, and it served as the temporary home of George Washington and the First Bank of the United States. Levi Lukens (1835-1915) was a leader in his hometown of Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, who helped bring the railroad to the area. He took over the running of his father's farm in the mid-19th century, focusing on dairy farming. In 1884, Levi turned the running of the farm over to his son, John Shaffner Lukens (1867-1936). The Levi Lukens family papers, 1854-1923, consist of a few volumes, largely pertaining to the finances of the Lukens farm. A couple of volumes in the collection are from the Penn Hall Association.

The Headley family was a prominent and socially-active family from Fallsington, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The Headley family papers, circa 1788- 1981, document several generations of the Headley family and related family members, particularly the family of Charles Moon Headley (b. 1865) and Elizabeth Schurz Headley (b. 1871), including their daughters Alice Headley Woodruff (1894-1989) and Eleanor Christina Headley (b. 1897). The collection is largely made up of photographs that document the family and the village of Fallsington, circa 1850-1950, and bound volumes including account books, minute books, and diaries. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Henry George (1839-1897) was a journalist and political economist best known for writing about and popularizing the idea of the "Single Tax." His work led to several reform movements in the Progressive Era and inspired the economic philosophy known today as "Georgism." George published his most popular work, Progress and Poverty, in 1879 while working as a journalist in San Francisco, California. Shortly after its publication, he moved to New York, NY, where he passed away in 1897. The Highlands Mansion was originally built for Anthony Morris (1766-1860), a lawyer and politician who served as speaker of the Pennsylvania Senate from 1793-1794. The estate was occupied by the Sheaff family from 1813-1917, when it was sold to the Sinkler family. The Sinkler family donated the remaining estate to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which took ownership in 1970, and it is now administered by the non-profit Highlands Historical Society. The Highlands Historical Society photograph collection, circa 1900-2005, includes photographs taken or collected by the Highlands Historical Society. The vast majority depict the Highlands building and grounds in the 1970s and 1980s, but there are a few photographs from the Sinkler-Roosevelt era, as well as some photographs from the 1990s.

Abstract:
The Olivia Stokes Hatch papers reveal the relief work of women during the early 20th century, as well as family relationships, largely illustrated through extensive family correspondence. Olivia Stokes Hatch (1908-1983) was born in New Haven, CT and attended Bryn Mawr College from 1925 to 1930. Prior to her marriage she was very active with the American Red Cross and American Conferences of Social Work. In 1939, Olivia Phelps Stokes married John Davis Hatch, Jr. an art collector, consultant, and museum director. They had four children: John Davis Hatch III, Daniel Lindley Hatch, James Stokes Hatch, and Sarah Stokes Hatch. Anna V.S. Mitchell, the sister of Caroline Mitchell Phelps Stokes, and the aunt of Olivia Stokes Hatch, spent most of her life engaged in relief work. Her career began in 1915 in Serbia and ended in 1936 in Constantinople. Abstract:
Machteld Johanna Mellink, celebrated archaeologist and professor of archaeology at Bryn Mawr College from 1949 to 1988, was born in Amsterdam, Holland in 1917. She received her BA in 1938 and MA in 1941 from the University of Amsterdam, and her PhD from the University of Utrecht in 1943. The Machteld Mellink papers cover Professor Mellink's academic and archaeological career from the late 1950s to the early 2000s. Included in the collection are her writings and notes, photographs, publications, and a few excavation tools. Researchers interested in her academic career, as well as her work related to excavation sites such as Kızılbel, Tarsus, and Sardis, will find valuable information in this collection. However, this collection does not provide particularly strong insight into archaeological history, nor Professor Mellink's thought process when approaching archaeological issues. Henry Neville Sanders (1869-1943) studied at Edinburgh University, Gottingen, and the University of Toronto prior to joining joined the faculty of Bryn Mawr College in 1902. Sanders remained at Bryn Mawr until his retirement in 1935. Angela Darkow (AB – 1911; MA – 1912; PhD – 1919) studied Greek and Latin at Bryn Mawr College. Aditionally, her sister, Marguerite, received her AB from Bryn Mawr in 1915. The collection consists of correspondence and diaries of Henry Neville Sanders (1869-1943) and Angela Darkow documenting their lives at Bryn Mawr, careers and relationships. A small part of the collection pertains to Marguerite, the Ferris Family, and M. Carey Thomas, president of Bryn Mawr.

Abstract:
Andrew H. Woods (1872 – 1956) became vice president of Canton College in Guangzhou, China in 1899. He maintained his association with Canton Christian College throughout the Boxer Rebellion, or Yihetuan Movement, and the end of the Qing dynasty. Woods moved back and forth between China and the United States with his wife, Fanny Sinclair, who graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1901. In 1929, the couple and their children settled in Iowa. In Iowa, Woods worked as a professor and practitioner of neurology and psychology. Andrew H. Woods' papers include diaries which describe his personal life and professional life in China and in the United States, photographs and postcards, much of Agnes Sinclair's personal correspondence, his articles, and various papers.

Henrietta Baldwin Sperry was a student at Bryn Mawr from 1917-1921. This collection consists of approximately 1000 of her letters. Of those letters, most are written by her to her mother about her time applying to and attending Bryn Mawr College (1916-1921). The subjects of the letters include social life at Bryn Mawr, disease quarantines, the college war effort. The collection also contains letters to Henrietta from her friend and admirer, Sheldon Clarke, who wrote to her while he was serving in the 9th Balloon Division during the First World War. The subjects of these letters includes impression of the French and Dutch people, reflection on war, training to be a balloonist, and daily life in the army. The collection also includes letters to Henrietta from her mother and third party correspondence. The subjects in these letters vary, but tend to be largely social news.

Florence Bascom (1862-1945) was a noted American geologist, specializing in petrography. She attended the University of Wisconsin, receiving her BA degree in 1882 and her MA degree in 1884, and was the first woman to be granted a PhD from Johns Hopkins University in 1893. From 1895 to 1928, Bascom taught at Bryn Mawr College, where she established the Geology Department. In 1896, she became the first woman appointed to the United States Geological Survey. The Florence Bascom papers, 1862-1938, offer evidence of Bascom's career as a regarded geologist and petrographer, particularly her tenure with the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The papers allude to many of Bascom's geological interests and projects, but do not seem to offer comprehensive documentation of any. Her work for the USGS is by far the best represented of all her efforts. Mary Elizabeth Garrett (1854-1915) promoted women's education by founding the Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, Maryland, helping to finance Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and ensuring that women were admitted to the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her family was prominent in Baltimore society, which allowed her to pursue her philanthropic activities. She was an active suffragist and financially helped that cause until her death in 1915. The Mary Garrett family papers houses the business and family papers of the Garrett family. This collection, which dates from 1874 to 1915, consists of correspondence, diaries, notebooks, biographical information, and business and estate records. The large number of family letters suggest a close relationship between its members.

Gertrude Leighton was born in Belfast, Ireland. Leighton first came to Bryn Mawr College as a member of the class of 1938 and majored in classical archaeology. In 1940, she was hired by Barnard College as a lecturer in the English Department. She entered law school at Yale in 1942, graduated in 1945. Leighton returned to Bryn Mawr in 1950 as Assistant Professor of Political Science. Later promotions made her full professor and department chairman. The collection consists mainly of office materials. There are syllabi and reading lists for BMC political science courses taught. There are miscellaneous materials from senior conferences, the journal club, and special conferences. Boxes 2, 3, and 4 contain typed drafts for an unpublished fifteen-chapter book Leighton was writing in collaboration with Richard G. Lonsdorf.

Born in Germany, Emmy Noether was a distinguished mathematician who immigrated to the United States as a refugee Jewish scholar in the 1930s where she took a teaching position at Bryn Mawr College. Charlotte Mary Mew (15 November 1869 – 24 March 1928) was an English poet. She contributed a number of short stories to the Temple Bar as well as the Yellow Book. She is best known for her book of poems The Farmer's Bride, published by Harold Monro's Poetry Bookshop in 1916. She committed suicide while depressed. These materials were collected by Mary C. Davidow in the process of writing her Ph.D. dissertation at Brown University (1960) on the life and work of Charlotte Mew. John Quincy Adams, later President of the United States, acted as Chief Plenipotentiary of the American delegation negotiating the Treaty of Ghent, and ending the War of 1812. Levett Harris was the American Consul (later the Charge d'Affaires) in Russia at this time. Adams's letters containing observations on the course of the negotiations, mediated by the Emperor Alexander, to Levett Harris are included in this collection. Harris, when later seeking appointment as Minister to Russia, was accused of having used his previous office corruptly for his personal gain. The collection also includes a statement in Harris' hand of his defense against this charge. W. D. Lewis, an American merchant residing in Russia during Harris' time there, returned to the U.S. in 1819 and made the accusation. S. F. Bemis describes the charge in his J. Q. Mary Ritter Beard (1876-1958) was an historian and a campaigner for women's suffrage and Ethel B. Weed was a lieutenant in the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces Civil Information and Education Office in Japan. Beard and Weed corresponded, with Weed providing research assistance to Beard for a proposed book on Japanese women's history and Beard providing advice to Weed regarding her activties with the Civil Information and Education Office. Daniel Branch was a young man from Connecticut who had enlisted in the provincial army (American), which served mostly in a support capacity for the British regulars. Setting out for Lake George on June 7th, 1758, he arrived there some three weeks later,a nd was present at the disastrous British attack on Fort Ticonderoga on July 8th. Thereafter, he spent the remainder of his enlistment on the eastern shore of Lake George. The Branch diary and Branch family correspondence houses personal materials related to Daniel Branch and his family. The collection, which ranges from 1758-1828, provides information into the personal experience of a soldier in the French and Indian wars, as well as the life of the Branch family in Connecticut and Vermont.

Abstract:
Sylvia Scudder (later Bowditch) was born in 1875. She was prepared by the Cambridge School for Girls in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She matriculated with the Bryn Mawr class of 1899, but received her degrees—in Greek and French—in 1901. From 1901-1902, she did graduate work in Greek at Radcliffe College. She taught Greek and English as the Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, Maryland from 1902-1904. She married Ingersoll Bowditch in 1904. For 21 years, she was the treasurer of the Bryn Mawr Club of Boston, as well as being the collector and editor for her class. She passed away in 1964. The Sylvia Scudder Bowditch scrapbook houses Scudder's one volume scrapbook. The scrapbook contains materials from 1895 to 1906 and primarily contains photographs and other Bryn Mawr memorabilia.

Bertha Szold (Levin) scrapbook, volume 1: 1891-1893 volume 2: 1893-1895 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Bertha Szold (Levin) was a member of the Bryn Mawr College class of 1895. After graduation, she taught English at St. Timothy's School in Baltimore. She later married Hiram Levin in 1901 and had five children. She was highly involved in Jewish charities and organizations, and was the cofounder of Hadassah, a women's Zionist organization. This collection contain's Szold's two volume scrapbook. The first scrapbook covers Szold's freshman and sophomore years, from 1891-1893, while the second scrapbook covers Szold's junior and senior years, from 1893-1895. The scrapbooks were arranged by Szold's daughter-in-law, Alexander Lee Levin '33, and primarily contain typed transcripts of letters written by Szold to her family.

Elizabeth Welbourn (Seccombe) scrapbook, 1935-1938 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Elizabeth Welbourn was a member of the Bryn Mawr class of 1938. After graduation, she studied at the Peabody Harp Institute at Johns Hopkins University. Playing harp was an integral part of her life: in addition to teaching the instrument, she was the president of the Bay Area Harp Association, and she played in local symphonies and at church. In 1940, Welbourn married Reverend Alfred Seccombe and the couple had four children together. She was involved in the Episcopal Church and numerous volunteer activities. This collection contains Welbourn's one volume scrapbook. The scrapbook covers Welbourn's last three years at college, from 1935-1938 and is mostly concerned with social memorabilia.

Myra Jessen papers, undated

Abstract:
Myra Stephannie Richards Jessen (1893-1985) graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1915. She worked as a German and Latin instructor at the Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, and then as a German Instructor at Bryn Mawr College, where she also pursued her graduate studies in German. She received her Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr in 1932. In 1952 she was appointed head of the college's German department. This collection, which is undated, consists primarily of research notes on Franz Grillparzer, an Austrian dramatist of the Biedermeier period. The collection includes Jessen's unpublished manuscript on Grillparzer entitled "Lehrhafte Formulieung im Grillparserschen Drama," and correspondence related to her research. Also included are grade books for German courses, exams, student recommendations, and correspondence with students, faculty, and alumnae committees.

Abstract:
Angeline H. Lograsso taught Italian at Bryn Mawr for 35 years, also chairing the department from 1952-1965. This collection houses her papers. The majority of the materials in the collection come from the late 1930s and 1940s, but some are undated. The collection is useful for its insights into relief organizations in Italy during World War II and into the career of Don Luigi Sturzo, an anti-Fascist statesman, for whom Lograsso served as a secretary for some time.
