Zieget Shaker Collection Papers, 1841-1868, 1919-1968, undated (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Zieget Shaker Collection Papers underscore Irene and Julius Zieget's reliance on members of the Shaker community in acquiring hundreds of samples of their art and crafts. Correspondence dating from 1929 to 1968 and a journal illustrated with photographs document the Ziegets' interaction with a number of Shaker sisters and eldresses, particularly Sister Marguerite Frost of Canterbury, NH. The papers also include some of the Ziegets' acquisitions--nineteenth- and early twentieth-century manuscript material. Included here are records of deaths, recipes and other household instructions along with spiritual messages, blessings and hymns all recorded neatly in the distinctive and decorative Shaker hand. A scrapbook Irene Zieget compiled of printed material dating from 1881 to 1960 includes published writings by Shakers as well as numerous newspaper and magazine articles and advertisements that chronicle the public's interest in the Shaker lifestyle and aesthetic.

Abstract:
Edwin Atlee Barber was Curator/Secretary of the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art from 1901to 1907, Director/Curator from 1907 to 1916 and Honorary Curator of American Pottery and Porcelain from 1893 to 1916. His great interest was in pottery, porcelain, and ceramics, primarily early American works. A scholar and prolific writer, Barber wrote and published numerous articles on his specialty. He is considered a pioneering scholar in his field. The Edwin Atlee Barber records include both general and administrative correspondence from Barber’s tenure at the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art. The Museum was know as the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art until 1938, when it was changed to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Materials date from 1898 to 1933. Langdon Warner Records, 1917-1923 (bulk) 1916-1929 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Langdon Warner, a scholar of Asian art and an archeologist, was Director of the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art from 1917 to 1923. Warner also served as Curator of the Wilstach Collection (the Wilstach family art collection was bequeathed to the city in 1892 and custodianship was transferred to the Museum in 1917). While serving as Director of the Museum Warner, traveled extensively in Asia and was often away from the Museum. Almost immediately after taking the job, he departed for Japan where he set about acquiring works of art that "were thought too good to lose." The Langdon Warner records contain correspondence of Langdon Warner, Museum Director between 1917 and 1923, and E. Hamilton Bell, Acting Director during Warner’s absence. Dalton Dorr Records, 1876-1904 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Dalton Dorr played a key role in the early years of the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art (later known as the Philadelphia Museum of Art). Dorr was elected Secretary of the Corporation in 1880. In 1888 he acted as both Secretary and Curator, and by 1892 he was performing the duties of Secretary, Director, and Curator. In 1899 William Platt Pepper took over as Director of the Museum, and Dorr continued on as Curator and Secretary. Dalton Door died on February 26, 1901. Shortly after, Edwin Atlee Barber assumed the roles of Secretary and Curator. This collection contains letter books, dating from 1876 to 1904, containing the correspondences of Dorr, Pepper, and Barber. The correspondence pertains to the Centennial exposition, Museum collections, acquisitions, exhibitions, staff, and repairs to Memorial Hall, as well as information regarding the formation of the Museum and its associated schools.

The Director's Exhibition records of the Philadelphia Museum of Art contain documentation of exhibition activities at the Museum. Julien Levy Gallery records, 1857-1982 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Julien Levy (1906-1981) was a pioneering New York art dealer of the 1930s and 1940s. He was introduced to the art world in Paris by Marcel Duchamp, who he met in New York in 1926. In Paris he met photographers and artists, including Man Ray, Berenice Abbot, and his future wife Joella Haweis, daughter of Dadaist muse Mina Loy. Upon his return to the United States, Levy worked briefly at the Weyhe Gallery before opening the Julien Levy Gallery at 602 Madison Avenue. In 1932, Levy mounted “Surrealisme,” an exhibition that introduced the Surrealist art movement to New York. This collection documents the career of prominent art gallery owner Julien Levy. The records date from 1857 to 1983 and include correspondence, exhibit announcements and invitations, scrapbooks, gallery financial ledgers, audio-visual materials, and personal papers such as letters, diaries, appointment books and calendars. Jean Sutherland Boggs Records, 1977-1983 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Dr. Jean Sutherland Boggs is a prominent art historian and expert scholar on Degas who served as Director of several major North American Museums. She was appointed as the first female Director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and served from 1970 to 1982. Part of her legacy was establishing new written Museum policies on important topics and setting into motion long-term plans for the reinstallation of the European galleries. During her tenure, the Museum acquired Degas’ “Red Nude” and installed the Thomas Eakins retrospective. Boggs also mounted two monumental exhibitions of non-Western art, “Manifestations of Shiva” (1981) and “Treasures of Ancient Nigeria” (1982), each of which presented great works of art in a scholarly context, and was well-received by the diverse communities the Museum sought to serve. Abstract:
The painter John Raphael Covert (1882-1960) was an active participant in the American avant-garde art movement between 1915 and 1923. He later became a travelling salesman for his family's Vesuvius Crucible Company and pursued his intense interest in cryptography, word games and magic squares. The John Raphael Covert Papers consist of the artist's correspondence, word and number puzzles (such as anagrams, acrostics, and riddles), financial records, photographic portraits, and a few sketches. Approximately half of the papers are in code, and thus are cryptic in both intent and meaning.

The Lloyd and Edith Havens Goodrich, Whitney Museum of American Art, Record of Works by Thomas Eakins consists mainly of typescript and manuscript papers, correspondence, and a variety of research and reference materials pertaining to Lloyd Goodrich's major published and unpublished works on American artist Thomas Eakins. This collection documents more than 50 years of Eakins scholarship, during which Goodrich published "Thomas Eakins: his life and work" (1933) and the revised and augmented monograph, "Thomas Eakins" (1982). A revision of the 1933 publication's catalogue raisonne section, intended as a separate volume, never reached the final stages before Goodrich's death, but represents a significant volume of material. The Johnson Collection Curatorial Records represent two "generations" of curatorial oversight of the art collection acquired by John Graver Johnson (19841-1917), one of Philadelphia's most prominent corporate lawyers. While the collection of more than 1,600 European paintings, sculpture and textiles is owned by the City of Philadelphia through Johnson's bequest, it is administered by and housed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, as is Johnson's extensive art library. In these curatorial records, the earlier files reflect the administrative and curatorial activities of Henri Marceau and Barbara Sweeny, roughly documenting their combined years of service, 1926-1972. Joseph J. Rishel succeeded Sweeny as Johnson Collection curator in November of 1972. His tenure, which continues to this day, comprises the second curatorial term, from 1973 to 1992. As a teacher, lecturer, curator and prolific writer, Dr. Stella Kramrisch (1898-1993) devoted nearly 70 years to the study and appreciation of Indian art. She served as the curator of Indian art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art from 1954 until her death in 1993. The Stella Kramrisch papers document her activities, correspondence and publications as a collector and historian of Indian art. The records in this collection date from 1921 to 1998 and contain information about the art objects in Stella Kramrisch’s personal collection (which were later donated to the Philadelphia Museum of Art), and her publications and research. There is also a large collection of photographs of Indian architecture, paintings and sculpture. As a teacher, scholar, lawyer, and consultant, Lawrence P. King (1929-2001) played an important role in the reform of bankruptcy law from the 1960s to his death in 2001. King taught commercial and bankruptcy law at New York University Law School. He served on a number of congressional commissions formed to analyze and reform bankruptcy law, including the Advisory Committee on Bankruptcy Rules of the Judicial Conference of the United States. He gave speeches and participated in panels regarding bankruptcy legislation for a number of seminars and educational programs. The National Bankruptcy Conference is a voluntary, non-profit, self-supporting organization of lawyers, law teachers, and bankruptcy judges who have achieved scholarly distinction in the field of bankruptcy law. Randall J. Newsome (b. 1950) graduated from the University of Cincinnati Law School in 1975. In 1998, Newsome was appointed to the Northern District of California's bankruptcy court, where he became Chief Judge in 2004. Randall Newsome has served as a faculty member for the Federal Judicial Center since 1987. He joined the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges in 1983, serving as President from 1998-1999. Kronish, Lieb, Weiner, and Hellman LLP Bankruptcy Judges Lawsuit files, 1984-1994 (inclusive)

On July 11, 1984, William Foley, Legislative Affairs Officer of the Administrative Office of the United States Courts ("Administrative Office"), issued a memorandum stating that the Administrative Office would not pay bankruptcy judges because, in its opinion, Congress had acted unlawfully by awarding retroactive terms of office to the normally presidentially-appointed bankruptcy judges. In response, on July 13, 1984, four bankruptcy judges sued Foley and the Administrative Office for abuse of power. The case became commonly known as Lundin v. Foley. Since its establishment in 1966, UNCITRAL has been recognized as the core legal body of the United Nations system in the field of international trade law. The William Warren papers (Federal Tax Projects) consists of Warren's papers related to the Federal Income, Estate, and Gift Tax project and Federal Income Tax Statute. In the mid-1940s, the American Law Institute (ALI) set about to analyze the law as it related to income tax. Known as the Income Tax Project, the primary objective was not to codify the law but to provide analysis of issues as they related to the United States' increasingly complex tax code. The Federal Income, Estate, and Gift Tax Project (as it would eventually be known) consisted of a series of non-binding recommendations to students, teachers, litigators, and legislators as they dealt with the evolving tax code. The ALI attributes Warren as the Associate Chief Reporter on the Federal Income, Estate, and Gift Tax project. This collection does not contain material related to Warren's work beyond the ALI's Federal Tax Projects and is arranged in two series within 72 bound volumes.

Abstract:
Geoffrey C. Hazard, Jr. graduated from Swarthmore College in 1953 and received his LL.B. from Columbia University in 1954. Widely considered an authority on legal ethics, Hazard was Director of the American Law Institute from 1984 to 1999. During his tenure, the ALI worked on many restatement and codification projects, including a Restatement of the Law Governing Lawyers and revisions to the Uniform Commercial Code. The collections, 1982-1999, chiefly covers Hazard's activities as Director of the American Law Institute from 1984 to 1999.

Abstract:
The American Law Institute (ALI) was founded in 1923 in response to a perceived uncertainty and complexity in American law. Former Penn Law Dean William Draper Lewis was the Institute's first director, running the organization's operations out of his campus office. The ALI was conceived as a representative gathering of the American Bar (including Judges, Lawyers, and Law Professors) for the stated mission "to promote the clarification and simplification of the law and its better adaptation to social needs, to secure the better administration of justice and to encourage and carry on scholarly and scientific legal work." The collection, 1922-2004, includes minutes, correspondence, reports, and related records regarding the activity of the American Law Institute's Executive Committee, Finance and Development Committee, Investment Committee, and Membership Committee.

Following the publication of the First Restatement of the Law, in 1936 the American Law Institute (ALI) held a series of meetings and published a series of reports that considered what additional areas of the law might be selected for future restatement projects. Work on the project continued into the mid-1940s. Many fields were considered, but only a few were actually selected for inclusion in future restatement projects. The collection, 1929-1968 and undated (bulk: 1929-1948), includes correspondence, reports, memoranda, and other records related to areas of the law up for consideration for future restatement projects, including business associations, industrial relations, and monopolies.

Abstract:
In the late 1960s, the American Bar Association's Committee on Federal Regulation of Securities recommended that a codification of securities law be undertaken by the American Law Institute (ALI). The ALI approved the project, appointing Louis Loss as the reporter in 1969. The purpose of the project was to analyze, integrate, and improve an array of federal acts related to securities law. The American Bar Association played an active role in reviewing and advising the committee on its work. The ALI approved the Federal Securities Code on May 19, 1978. Loss continued working with the project's consultants, advisers, and other interested parties to prepare a final draft of commentary on the code. Although the ALI assumed no responsibility for Loss's comments, the organization authorized the publication of a Reporter's Commentary with the Federal Securities Code in 1980. American Law Institute Criminal Justice Youth Committee records, 1935-1959 (inclusive)

Abstract:
In 1938, the American Law Institute (ALI) formed the Criminal Justice--Youth Committee to review the findings of a New York City study of criminal behavior among young people called "Youth in the Toils." The culmination of the committee's work was the Model Youth Correction Authority Act, a model act that favored the integration of a number of youth treatment processes already employed by various states. The committee also proposed the creation of a Youth Authority, a state-wide panel that would handle sentencing guidelines, with an emphasis on treatment and not punishment, for all underage criminal offenders. Following the Model Youth Corrections Authority Act's promulgation in 1940, the ALI appointed a special adviser, John R. Ellingston, to help states adopt Youth Authority legislation. This project constitutes a report to the American Law Institute [ALI] rather than by the ALI. The first volume details the legal and social concerns that gave rise to the study in the mid-1980s, and distills contemporary scholarship dealing with how well various institutions—prominently, but not exclusively, tort litigation—have performed in addressing the human and economic problems created by personal injuries. The second volume undertakes an in-depth analysis of those facets of the tort system that have proved especially troublesome in recent years and presents the Reporters' judgments about how the tort system should evolve in the future. The collection, 1985-1992, includes correspondence with foundations and other agencies who funded the project, correspondence with project members and other interested parties, reports submitted to Council, consultants and advisers, and publications of the study.

Louis Henkin (1917-2010) was the Harlan Fiske Stone Professor of Constitutional Law, a position he held until he was designated University Professor in 1981. George Wharton Pepper was born in Philadelphia in 1867. He graduated from Penn Law School with an LL.B. in 1889 and was first in his class. As a student, Pepper helped found The Daily Pennsylvanian, the university's student-run examination. In addition to studying law with Philadelphia scion George Washington Biddle, Pepper taught at Penn Law School from 1893 to 1910, when he left to attend to his expanding private practice. Pepper also served as United States Senator for Pennsylvania from 1922 to 1927. The collection, 1886-1954, include correspondence regarding law school matters; syllabi, notes, lectures, and case files, probably from the 1890s; papers related to Pepper's service on the Trustee Committee and Reorganization Committee; and articles and other writings drafted by Pepper.

Abstract:
John Dickinson was born in Greensboro, Maryland in 1894. He was a descendent of John Dickinson, who drafted the Articles of Confederation. After teaching American and Medieval history, Dickinson earned his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1919. That same year, he enrolled at Harvard Law School, where he received his LL.B. degree in 1921. At the time, Dickinson practiced law in New York and Los Angeles. He also was a noted writer, publishing his Administrative Law and the Supremacy of Nations in 1927. A pioneering work in administrative law, the book is widely regarded as a legal classic. After stints teaching at Harvard and Princeton, Dickinson accepted an offer to teach at the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1929, where he remained until his resignation in 1948. Peter McCall was born in Trenton, New Jersey in 1809. McCall was Professor of practice, pleading, and evidence at law and in equity at Penn Law School. After resigning his post at the Law School, he became a University Trustee. McCall was active in Philadelphia public life, serving as mayor in 1844 and as Chancellor of the Law Academy of Philadelphia, the oldest law association in the United States, from 1873 until his death in 1880.

Owen J. Roberts was born in Philadelphia in 1875. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor's degree in 1895 and a law degree in 1898. While at Penn, Roberts edited "The Daily Pennsylvanian." He later served as Professor at the Law School from 1898 to 1918. Roberts was an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1930 to 1945. After stepping down from the bench, he served as Dean for the University of Pennsylvania Law School from 1948 to 1951. Roberts died in 1955. The collection includes outlines of lectures Owen J. Roberts gave at the University of Pennsylvania Law School on Constitutional Law.

Abstract:
John Honnold (1915-2011) graduated from Harvard University Law School in 1936 and became Chief of the Court Review Branch of the Office of Price Administration during World War II. Honnold served as a Professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School from 1946 to 1969, when he became Chief of Legal Staff to the Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL). He resumed teaching at the Penn Law School in 1974 while working on the UNCITRAL draft that was ratified at the Vienna Convention. The collection, circa 1983-1993, includes copies of letters Honnold sent and received as the co-chairman of the U.S. Delegation to the Vienna Conference and Chief of Staff of UNCITRAL. The collection also contains a reference file that spans from 1986 to 1993.

The state bar examination is a test that law school graduates are required to pass in order to practice law in a specific jurisdiction. The bar exam is usually conducted two or three times a year, depending on the state. As a recent standard rule, the bar exam is always held on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of every February and July of a calendar year. Historically, this was not always the case. The State Bar Exam Records contains materials that reveal how the early twentieth century bar examinations in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania did not limit the test to be administered in February and July. Instead, New Jersey administered the bar examination three times a year: February, June, and November; Pennsylvania administered the bar examination two times a year: July and December; and New York administered the bar examination three times a year: January, June, and October.

The Judge Dolores Sloviter papers, 1965-2012, consists of material documenting Sloviter's active involvement in the legal profession. Dolores Korman Sloviter graduated with her LL.B. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School (now known as University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School) in 1956 where she was one of eight women in her graduating class. She was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in 1979 and served as Chief Judge from 1991 to 1998. The collection contains correspondence, reports, and news clippings that document Sloviter's time serving on the Third Circuit and her involvement in professional legal organizations. The collection also includes speeches that Sloviter gave at seminars/colloquia where she often spoke on the history and current role of women in the legal profession.
