Overview and metadata sections
Federated Department Stores was originally founded as Macy's Inc. in Columbus, Ohio in 1929. On January 15, 1990, Federated Department Stores Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection after it went bankrupt after its takeover of Allied Stores, and later emerged from bankruptcy almost exactly two years later in 1992. In 2007, Federated changed its name to Macy's, Inc.
The Federated Department Store Inc., Bankruptcy records is a small collection comprised of a creditors' newsletter, published by journalist Peter A. Chapman, which details virtually every moment in the Federated Department Stores case. The twelve inch thick newsletter is divided into 6 bound volumes. Although published in 1992, the records date from 1990 to 1992, and are a chronological summary of the reorganization of Federated Department Stores, Inc., as well as Allied Stores Corporation, Federated Stories, Inc., and their affilates. The material includes hearings, petitions, financial documentation, motions, and other related records.
This chronological account will be especially useful to those interested in or studying the history of the bankruptcy of Federated Department Stores, Inc. Researchers may also find the commentary on the courtroom battles is quite spirited and rich.
