Jean Scobie Davis papers, 1892-1985 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Jean Scobie Davis, a 1914 graduate of Bryn Mawr College, taught economics and sociology at Agnes Scott College, Vassar College, Pierce College, Wells College and the American Women's College in Beirut. A lifetime interest in prison reform resulted in her work at the New York State Correctional Facility in Bedford Hills, New York. The Jean Scobie Davis papers is a collection consisting largely of Jean Scobie Davis' diaries and correspondence covering nearly all stages of her life. The collection, which dates from 1892 to 1985, is divided into seven subseries: "Autobiographical Material;" "Correspondence;" "Diaries;" "Family History;" "Photographs;" "Prison Reform;" and "Scrapbooks and Guestbook." Material found in the collection is diverse, and consists of letters, reports, bound diaries as well as loose diary pages, photographs, scrapbooks, and handwritten notes.

Phyllis Pray Bober papers, 1940-2002 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Phyllis Pray Bober (b. 1920) received her B.A. from Wellesley College in 1941. In 1973 she accepted the position of Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Bryn Mawr College which she held until 1980. Bober's life long interest in culinary history led to courses, "historical banquets", and a book: Art, Culture, and Cuisine: Ancient and Medieval Gastronony. The collection consist of miscellaneous materials on Bober's career, miscellaneous research notes, typescripts, materials course notes, lecture scripts, correspondence (organized by subject matter), miscellaneous correspondence filed chronologically, tapes and disks for her talks, and materials from her own graduate and undergraduate education.

Queen's Dolls' House Correspondence, 1922-1923 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Queen's Dolls' House was created between 1921 and 1924 as a gift from the British people to their monarch. The project was organized by Princess Marie Louise, a cousin of the king, who solicited artists, authors,and craftsmen for donations for the various rooms and furnishings. The majority of this collection is 396 letters addressed to the Princess Marie Louise by artists who had been invited to contribute works for the print files in the library of the dollhouse. These letters accompanied the submitted drawings, paintings, and prints. There are also eight literary works, mostly n typscript, to be written into books for the library. There are also sketches of the royal monogram, used for a frieze on the edges of the book shelves in the library, by Edwin Lutyens, the prominent architect who designed the house and coordinated much of the physical work of its construction and assembly.

Joseph Conrad collection, 1898-1943 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Joseph Conrad (1857-1924), a novelist and short story writer, was born Jozef Konrad Teodor Korzeniowski in Berdichev, Ukraine, and became a British citizen in 1886. Best known for his short story "Heart of Darkness" (1902), Conrad also wrote a number of novels on his travels. The collection includes letters from Conrad and third party letters, as well as three corrected typescript drafts.

Khalil A. Totah and Eva Marshall Totah papers, 1896-1955 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The papers revolve around three topics and provide a picture of Quakers in Palestine in the 20th century: Khalil A. Totah, his second wife, Eva Marshall Totah and his first wife, Ermina Jones Totah. Khalil Totah discusses the situation in Palestine, primarily in the 1930s, and speaks of his own life and aspirations, as when he became a Quaker minister. His diaries expand the picture, adding information about Friends Boys School in Ramallah (Palestine) and his understanding of the political situation, again primarily in the 1930s. The photographs add the dimension of geography, placing Totah at Oak Grove Seminary, Clark College, the Institute of Arab American Affairs, and at the Friends School in Ramallah. The papers of Ermina Jones Totah portray an earnest and dedicated teacher and wife, but carry little detail. Eva Marshall Totah has the largest quantity of correspondence, primarily 1920s and 1930s. Abstract:
James Wood (1839-1925) was "interested in education, philanthropy, in the various branches of agriculture, in archaeology, history, Indian lore, anthropology, science, in prison reform and above all, in the Bible and religion," (ABS, 2). He was also a business man, serving as President of the Genesee Salt Company in Piffard, New York. The James Wood papers are divided into twelve series: "Biographical Material:" "Agriculture;" Business and Financial Material;" "Collected Quaker Material;" "Correspondence;" "Hugh Barbour Writings and Talks regarding James Wood;" "Journals;" "Organizations;" "Photographs and Albums;" "Political Involvement;" Prison Reform;" and lastly, "Writings by James Wood." The manuscript of George A. Barton, entitled "The Boston Broad Brim," appears to be satirical in nature, and, according to the introduction supplied by the manuscript, "The Boston Broad Brim is published Semi-Occasionally for the benefit of the Boston Meeting. It is the official organ of the Whittier Association," and was previously called the "Highland Hall News, and was a weekly paper." This volume provides a brief satirical history of Quakers, particularly their move from Switzerland to the United States, the "Eighth Idyll of Theocrates," "The Miracle" translated from German, and a story called "The Hoag Surprise Party."

These manuscripts of "Book of Epistles of George Fox, Founder of Quakerism," which was originally written in 1714 by Thomas Richardson, are typed transcripts of the original document, as compiled by Thomas Richardson's descendants, Edward Wanton Smith, Esther Morton Smith, and Anna Wharton Wood. The manuscript includes an introduction which discusses the history of Thomas Richardson's volume of the epistles of George Fox and its inheritance to subsequent generations, and provides biographical information for Thomas Richardson. The collection includes holdings relevant to antislavery, temperance, women's rights, penal reform, and other social concerns of Quakers in the United States and in England.

Henry Stanley Newman's "Among the Red Indians" provides a narrative of Newman's travels among Native Americans west of the Mississippi River in 1889. The manuscript was prepared for Mary S. Kimber when she was proposing to write a book on the work that American Friends did with indigenous peoples, which was published in 1917 and entitled "Friends and the Indians." Newman's manuscript was never published. The manuscript describes the various settlements that Newman and his wife visited on their travels, the nations they interacted ith, including the Muscogee, and the landscape.

Daisy Newman's novel, "Indian Summer of the Heart," is the sequel to "I take thee, Serenity," and focuses on two entwined love stories. The first story is that of the continuing story of Peter and Serenity Holland, married at the end of the earlier book, as they face the difficult stresses of building two careers while also trying to meet the needs of Ross, their little boy. The other love story is that of Oliver Otis, a 78 year old widower, and Peter and Serenity's mentor, and Loveday Mead, who has come to the little Quaker village of Kendal. Both stories focus on the difficulties that stem from the pressures of modern life and the effect of the influence of Quakerism on the lives of the characters.

Abstract:
"Satan's Harbginer Encountered, His False News of a Trumpet Detected, His Crooked Ways in the Wildernesse, laid open to the view of the impartial & judicious, Being Some thing by way of answer to Daniel Leeds his book entitled News of a Trumpet Sounding in the Wildernesse etc. wherein is shown," as indicated by the title, was a response to Daniel Leed's publication, which criticized the Society of Friends and sought to correct the accusations made by Leeds. The original manuscript was written by Caleb Pusey (1650?-1727), and published in Philadelphia in 1700, though it is unknown who copied this volume. According to a book plate on the inside cover, this volume was originally owned by Asa Matlack, and was later loaned by him to the Library of Chester Monthly Meeting, in Moorestown, New Jersey.

Abstract:
Machteld Johanna Mellink, celebrated archaeologist and professor of archaeology at Bryn Mawr College from 1949 to 1988, was born in Amsterdam, Holland in 1917. She received her BA in 1938 and MA in 1941 from the University of Amsterdam, and her PhD from the University of Utrecht in 1943. The Machteld Mellink papers cover Professor Mellink's academic and archaeological career from the late 1950s to the early 2000s. Included in the collection are her writings and notes, photographs, publications, and a few excavation tools. Researchers interested in her academic career, as well as her work related to excavation sites such as Kızılbel, Tarsus, and Sardis, will find valuable information in this collection.
