Jeffrey Smedley (1811-1861) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on December 1, 1811, the son of Isaac Smedley and Amy Cox. He married Catherine W. Denny, and the couple had children: Lydia (b. 1835), Amy (b. 1837), Isaac (b. 1838), John Kinsey (b. 1839), Abiah (b. 1840), Anna Mary (b. 1843), Jeffrey Jr. (b. 1845), and Charles (b. 1847). Smedley died on May 1, 1861, in West Philadelphia.

This collection is comprised of the single volume manuscript by Jeffrey Smedley, entitled "Notes on Early Friends Attending Meetings." The beginning of the volume was used to record financial transactions, but the majority of the volume describes testimony given by various Quakers at Meetings for worship, arranged chronologically. Many of the entries are related to Elias Hicks.

"Notes on Early Friends Attending Meetings" was donated to Special Collections, Haverford College in 1952 by Susanna Smedley.
