Overview and metadata sections
John Smith (1722-1771) was born in Burlington, New Jersey, on January 20, 1771, the son of Richard Smith and Abigail Rapier. He married Hannah Logan on October 7, 1748, in Germantown, Pennsylvania, and the couple had four children: Sarah Logan Smith (b. 1749), James Smith (b. 1750), Hannah Smith (b. 1753), and John Smith (b. 1761). Smith died on March 26, 1771, in Burlington, New Jersey.
This collection is comprised of the three handwritten volumes of John Smith's "The Lives of Ministers of the Gospel Among the People called Quakers," as well as an index of the three volume collection. The manuscripts are comprised of entries about Quaker ministers, arranged alphabetically. Entries briefly describe the life of each minister, largely relying upon quoted testimonies from Monthly and Yearly Meetings.
