Joseph Hutchinson Smith graduated with a bachelor's from Haverford College in 1921. He received his master's from Harvard University, and his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1932.

This collection is comprised of the single volume manuscript of Joseph Hutchinson Smith's "English Fairies, A History of Belief," which he presented as his Ph.D. dissertation at Harvard University in 1932. The volume explores the history of English belief in fairies, and the manuscript is divided into two sections: "The origin and development of the belief" and "The literary expression of the belief." The manuscript includes illustrations from early sources to be included in the published volume, as well as minor edits and annotations.
