William P. Dewees (1825-1901) was born in Ohio in 1825, the son of William Dewees and Debe Hoopes. He married Maria Embree and the couple had six children: Matilda (1852-1938), Joseph (1858-1946), J. Harvey (1865-1918), Isaac T. (1855-1946), Barclay C. (1862-1949), Mary R. (1867-1960). He later married Elizabeth Bedell. He died in 1901 in Linn, Iowa.

This collection is comprised of the personal correspondence of William P. Dewee and the handwritten manuscripts of essays he wrote for The Friend.
