This collection contains architectural drawings by Robert Adam (1728-1792) for the unbuilt Court House and Gaol, Appleby, 1766, together with architectural drawings by Robert Fothergill, architect, for the same project. In addition, the collection contains two leases, signed by four Adam brothers, for a house in the Royal Terrace, London, in the Adam family development, Adelphi, as well as an architectural drawing attributed to the office of Robert Adam for an unidentified five-bay house.

Abstract:
Elihu Katz (born 1926) is an American Israeli sociologist and media scholar who has made substantial contributions to the field of communication, specifically in the areas of media effects, diffusion, uses and gratifications and reception, and media events. This primary portion of Katz's papers documents his scholarly and professional activities at the Guttman Institute of Applied Social Research, and Annenberg Schools for Communication at the University of California and University of Pennsylvania, respectively. Materials pertaining to the University of Chicago, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the Israel Broadcasting Authority are also present, but less substantially so. The collection is divided into ten series and includes correspondence; drafts of talks, papers, articles, and books; research notes; conference materials; teaching materials and course documents; public opinion studies and reports; Israeli broadcasting materials; and biographical documents.

Gene-Ann Polk was a physician, hospital administrator, professor of pediatrics at Columbia University, and president of the Susan Smith McKinney Steward Medical Society. She was involved with various organizations for Black women physicians in and around New York. The materials in this collection are related to Dr. Polk's education, her private practice, and her years at Harlem Hospital. The collection also includes materials Polk collected related to Black women physicians, and the records of the Susan Smith McKinney Steward Medical Society (SSMS).

Hartwig Kuhlenbeck papers, 1911-1984

Abstract:
Born in Germany in 1897, Dr. Hartwig Kuhlenbeck, a neuroanatomist, received his degrees of Ph.D. in Philosophy and of M.D. (summa cum laude) from the University of Jena, Germany. He spent several years lecturing in Japan and at the University of Breslau (Germany) before moving to the United States in 1933. Dr. Kuhlenbeck was appointed to several positions at the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, beginning in 1935 as Acting Professor of Anatomy and retiring in 1982 as Emeritus Professor of Anatomy. He spent most of his professional career at Woman’s Medical College, with the exception of a two-year leave of absence from 1944-1946, when he served in the United States Army Medical Corps. Dr. Kuhlenbeck published over 150 works during his career as a world-renowned anatomist. He passed away in 1984.

Hahnemann University photograph collection, circa 1840-2004 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Hahnemann University Photograph Collection is an extensive collection that covers the people and buildings of Hahnemann from its beginnings in 1848 as the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania to 2004 as Hahnemann University Hospital. Much of the collection is a photographic record of the buildings that were used and constructed by the organization throughout its history. The photographs consistently span the lifetime of the school and hospital from the mid-1840s to turn of the twenty-first century. Shots include interiors, exteriors, construction sites, and aerial shots of the campus (and city). There are also a few shots of other homeopathic hospitals and schools in the nineteenth century. A significant portion of the collection visually documents the departments and medical instruments/equipment used by those departments. Hahnemann University’s long history began in 1848 with the founding of the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania. Over the years, the institution evolved in many ways, eventually becoming Hahnemann University and, later, the Drexel University College of Medicine. In the mid- to late-twentieth century, with the decline of homeopathy, Hahnemann re-invented itself as a nationally known academic medical center with prominence in cardiac surgery and cardiology, oncology, transplantation, training of non-physician health professionals, community health, and community mental health. This expertise led to many firsts for Hahnemann, including international advances in cardiac surgery. Constantine Hering and Calvin B. Knerr family papers, 1820-1940 (bulk) 1820-2003 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Dr. Constantine Hering (1800-1880), born and educated in Germany, immigrated to Philadelphia in 1833 and devoted his life to the study, practice and education of homeopathic medicine in the United States. As such, he is considered the father of homeopathy in America. Hering founded several schools and organizations devoted to teaching homeopathy, especially the North American Academy of the Homeopathic Healing Arts, aka the Allentown Academy, in 1836, and the Hahnemann Medical College of Philadelphia in 1848. Hering’s pupil and eventual son-in-law and professional assistant, Dr. Calvin B. Knerr, also practiced homeopathy. Knerr was integrally involved in the editing of two of Hering’s books and also devoted much time and effort to writing Hering’s biography, The Life of Hering. The Woman's Hospital of Philadelphia Records, 1861-1964 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Founded in 1861 by Ann Preston, M.D., the Woman’s Hospital of Philadelphia provided clinical experience for the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania students and practical training for nurses. In 1929, the West Philadelphia Hospital for Women merged with the Woman's Hospital of Philadelphia, retaining the latter's name. The Woman's Hospital of Philadelphia continued in existence until 1964 when it was absorbed by the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The collection contains minutes of the Board of Managers and various committees, dating from 1861 to 1964; financial records, including auditor's reports and bequests, and dating from 1894 to 1964; clinical reports, dating from the 1890s; a register of deaths dating from 1872 to 1890; board of manager minutes (1863 to 1881)and pamphlets and bulletins (1923-1924; 1957-1960) from the hospital's Training School for Nurses.

Northwestern University Woman's Medical School records/Chicago Woman's Medical College, 1870-1924, 1947

Abstract:
The Woman’s Hospital Medical College of Chicago was founded in 1870 by Mary H. Thompson (1829-1895) and Dr. William Heath Byford (1817-1890) in order to provide equal education opportunities for female medical students in the Chicago area. In 1879, the name of the medical school was changed to the Woman’s Medical College of Chicago; and in 1892, it was taken over by the Northwestern University and renamed the Northwestern University Woman’s Medical School. Over the next ten years, financial difficulties arose and in 1902, the medical school was dismantled. The Woman’s Clinical Dispensary, “a working corps of clinical teachers and assistants” who held clinics, survived until 1907. This collection documents the Chicago Woman’s Medical College and its transitions to the Northwestern University Woman’s Medical School from 1870 to 1945, with the bulk of the material created from 1870 to 1924. Abstract:
Walter Lee Sheppard was an important member of the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania community starting in 1919 and running through the early 1940s. Beginning as the college's legal councel, he also served on the Board of Corporators, held the position of chairman for the Commitee of Appointments, Promotion, and Tenure, was a member of the Executive Committee of the Corporation, and eventaully became the Vice President of the College. This collection includes minutes, reports, correspondence, and general material gathered from the various roles SHeppard held. It includes administrative records of the Woman's Medical College and Hospital, new building sites, appropriations and bequests, extensive correspondence, and several court cases from the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, for which Sheppard was the college's lawyer.

Catharine Macfarlane papers, 1935-1960 (bulk) 1895-1971 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Catharine Macfarlane graduated from Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1898, and later became an instructor in obstetrics at the college and a professor of gynecology. She was the first woman to be elected to the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1935. Macfarlane devoted much of her career to cancer research and prevention, specifically pelvic cancer. In 1956, she became the first woman to serve as Chairman for the Medical Society of Pennsylvania’s Commission on Cancer. Macfarlane began researching the breast self-exam in 1962, working with the Philadelphia Division of the American Cancer Society. Her career spanned nearly 70 years, and she was affectionately known as “Dr. Kitty Mac.” This collection spans 12 separate accessions and 16 linear feet. Most of the materials regard Macfarlane's professional activities, her research in uterine cancer, and the recognition she received for her work in cancer prevention. Elizabeth Cisney Smith (1881 to 1965) was a practicing physician for 35 years from the time of her graduation from Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1911 to her retirement in 1946. She primarily worked in Pennsylvania and Maryland with brief time spent in North Dakota and Ohio. Dr. Smith was an active supporter of women’s rights as well as the suffrage movement. The collection was initially compiled and arranged by Isabel Smith Stein the daughter of Dr. Elizabeth Cisney Smith, and consists of 6 linear feet of material housed in 17 boxes. This collection dates from 1887 to 1972 and is composed of diaries and memoirs, correspondence, photographs, and audio materials.

Mary Pauline Root papers, 1883-1985 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Dr. (Mary) Pauline Root (b. 1859, d.1944) was a graduate of Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1883. She was the first female doctor to recieve an internship at Blockley Hospital in Philadelphia, and was reportedly the first female doctor to be sent on a mission by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. She carried out medical missionary work from 1885-1893 at a women's hospital in Madurai, India. Root completed post-graduate work at the Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital before she was employed as the resident physican at Smith College from 1906-1909, where she taught courses on "hygiene". From 1919-1921, Root traveled around the United States teaching "social hygiene" in Native American communities and Indian Government Schools for the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs. Born and raised in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, Dr. Doris Bartuska graduated from the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1954, where she also served her internship and residency. An endocrinologist, she joined the faculty in 1958, was an Associate Dean for Curriculum, President of the Medical Staff, and a member of the Board of Directors and President of the Alumni Association. Dr. Bartuska was Director of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism as well as the Endocrine Fellowship Training Program at Woman’s Medical College/Medical College of Pennsylvania. She was named Emeritus Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology) at Drexel University College of Medicine in 1996. Dr. Bartuska passed away in 2013. Abstract:
Stella Yates Botelho, M.D. (b. 1919) is an alumnus of Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania (M.D. 1949) and the University of Pennsylvania (A.B. 1940). She specialized in the field of physiology and had a distinguished career as a researcher and teacher. The papers include materials documenting both her personal life and professional career. While in medical school, Botelho contracted tuberculosis and spent nearly a year at Eagleville Sanatorium, which is discussed in her diary from this time. At the University of Pennsylvania Botelho taught courses in applied and medical physiology and she maintained an active research lab, studying respiratory physiology, neuromuscular physiology, the spinal cord, and secretion of exocrine glands. She published over 40 scientific articles in the field of physiology and was the principal investigator on numerous scientific grants. She mentored dozens of pre- and post-doctoral students. Abstract:
From 1925 to 1970, the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania (WMC) underwent significant change, adapting to both survive and prosper in a transforming society. Administrative change was brought about and explored to spark institutional growth and/or to mollify financial stress. Among the more significant events in the College’s history was the 1930 move to new and larger facilities in East Falls, and an administrative reorganization in 1942. In the 1940s and 1960s, WMC also explored the financial and administrative benefits of merging with other institutions in the Philadelphia area; Kensington Women’s Hospital and the Woman’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Jefferson Medical College. Amidst all of the change, WMC continued to honor its traditions and celebrate milestones, especially its Centennial Anniversary in 1950. The collection contains the primary source material for a thorough institutional history of a major women's service organization that spans three-quarters of a century. Issues of professionalization, volunteerism, and social and occupational networks as they relate to women's professional and social careers are well-documented. The AWH records provide the sources to examine a classic example of a woman's association that self-consciously bridged private and public domains, actively sought to bring the resources of public associations and the state to the aid of individuals in their own communities, and, in those countries which most severely relegated women to the private household, offered women access to a professional and public career.

Bertha Van Hoosen (1863-1952), a doctor specializing in obstetrics and gynecology in Chicago, IL, founded the American Medical Women's Association. Her collection includes correspondence, journal articles, plans for a Medical Women's Library at Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, teaching material, images, and bibliographic material regarding women in medicine. A large part of the collection concerns Van Hoosen's interests in the National Medical Women's Association, later the American Medical Women's Association and the Medical Women's Library. There are also photographic images, x-rays and illustrations of medical case studies conducted by Van Hoosen.

The Black Women Physicians Project records contains documentation of the lives and careers of Black women in medicine, compiled by Margaret Jerrido, who served as an Archivist at the Medical College of Philadelphia. Started in the 1980s by Jerrido, BWPP is an artificial collection (a collection with materials from disparate sources intentionally arranged for research use) and includes not only Biographical Reference Files, but also oral histories, planning materials that supported BWPP, and photographs. Because the records are largely photocopies of materials from various times, BWPP covers a date range of 1807-2013, with the bulk of materials (especially original materials) covering 1971-1992

Dr. Agnes Gowdey graduated from Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1935, after attending Carroll College in Wisconsin. She was in general practice with a concentration in obstetrics for most of her career, practicing first in Philadelphia and later in Riverton, New Jersey. She had an ongoing relationship with the American Youth Foundation (AYF), especially their Camp Merrowvista. The collection documents this ongoing relationship with the camp and its champions. After retirement, Dr. Gowdey was very involved with elder care initiatives in Moorestown, N.J. The collection is most informative about Dr. Gowdey’s time as a student at Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, her early private practice in the 1940s, and her involvement with Camp Merrowvista. Dr. Gowdey’s most influential work in the areas of obstetrics, elder care, and sex education for young people, is strongly represented here. The Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company was a prominent coal mining and shipping company first established in 1820 with the merger of the Lehigh Coal Mining Company and the Lehigh Navigation Company, both of which operated in the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania beginning in 1818. The Company owned and operated an extensive system of coalmines in Pennsylvania’s Carbon and Schuylkill Counties, two canals, and several railroads and railways. The Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company is credited with shaping the course of the American industrial revolution in Pennsylvania, as it contributed to innovation in transportation, manufacturing, and use of natural resources. Fresh Air with Terry Gross is a radio talk show produced by WHYY-FM in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and broadcast nationally on National Public Radio (NPR). Fresh Air began production in 1975 and features interviews with journalists, scholars, and experts in various fields aimed at putting current issues into a larger political, cultural, and historical framework. The Fresh Air audio archive represents more than 8,000 interviews which were recorded over the past 40 years in various audio formats—from analog reels to digital files. The digital collection contains files covering 7,000 Fresh Air episodes of the radio program’s original broadcast audio recordings.

Jean Scobie Davis, a 1914 graduate of Bryn Mawr College, taught economics and sociology at Agnes Scott College, Vassar College, Pierce College, Wells College and the American Women's College in Beirut. A lifetime interest in prison reform resulted in her work at the New York State Correctional Facility in Bedford Hills, New York. The Jean Scobie Davis papers is a collection consisting largely of Jean Scobie Davis' diaries and correspondence covering nearly all stages of her life. The collection, which dates from 1892 to 1985, is divided into seven subseries: "Autobiographical Material;" "Correspondence;" "Diaries;" "Family History;" "Photographs;" "Prison Reform;" and "Scrapbooks and Guestbook." Lucy T. Shoe Meritt (1906- 2003) was an acclaimed archaeologist, scholar, teacher and editor who received her B.A, M.A, and Ph.D degrees from Bryn Mawr. During her life time, Shoe Meritt taught at Mount Holyoke College and the University of Texas at Austin, was a fellow at the American Academy of Rome, and served as the Editor of Publications for the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. Additionally, she was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study and the American Institute of Archaeology. She received the Gold Medal of the Archaeological Institute of America for Distinguished Archaeological Achievement in 1976. The collection is largely comprised of Shoe Meritt's correspondence with her family and notable scholars who were her contemporaries. Mary Katharine Woodworth (1900 – 1988) graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1924 with a Greek and English major and a minor in archaeology. She received her Ph. D in English from Bryn Mawr in 1933. After her book on British poet and genealogist Samuel Egerton Brydges was published in 1935, she began teaching in the English department at Bryn Mawr, and introduced the college's first course on 20th-century writers. She received a Distinguished Teaching Award from Bryn Mawr in 1968 upon her retirement. Her bequest of her entire estate to Bryn Mawr in 1988, which included Chagall's The Violinist, made her the 4th largest contributor to the college at the time. Phyllis Dubsky Feldkamp attended Bryn Mawr College as part of the class of 1937, and was a journalist living in France in the 1950s and 1960s where she began writing about fashion. She served as the Fashion and Style Editor for the Philadelphia Bulletin from 1968 to 1982, and also did much free-lance writing. The collection includes interviews and correspondence with figures in the fashion industry, and copies of nearly all of her writings. The Speer Family papers represent four generations of that family, with the bulk of material attributed to the last two generations, especially Robert Elliott Speer and his wife and three of his five children: Emma Bailey, Elliott, Margaret Bailey, and William Speer. The family was active in the Presbyterian Church, serving that institution in a variety of different capacities. The children, in addition to their religious roles, held prominent positions in academic administration. The family's papers primarily consist of the personal papers of the family, although they also contain the professional correspondence of Emma Bailey and Margaret Bailey Speer, both Bryn Mawr College alumnae. This collection, which dates from 1802 to 1982, contains letters, diaries, speeches, publications, awards, and photographs, although the vast majority of the material is the letters between family members.

Queen's Dolls' House Correspondence, 1922-1923 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Queen's Dolls' House was created between 1921 and 1924 as a gift from the British people to their monarch. The project was organized by Princess Marie Louise, a cousin of the king, who solicited artists, authors,and craftsmen for donations for the various rooms and furnishings. The majority of this collection is 396 letters addressed to the Princess Marie Louise by artists who had been invited to contribute works for the print files in the library of the dollhouse. These letters accompanied the submitted drawings, paintings, and prints. There are also eight literary works, mostly n typscript, to be written into books for the library. There are also sketches of the royal monogram, used for a frieze on the edges of the book shelves in the library, by Edwin Lutyens, the prominent architect who designed the house and coordinated much of the physical work of its construction and assembly.

Henrietta Cozens (fl. 1900-1930s) was a horticulturalist and a friend of the artists Elizabeth Shippen Green Elliott (1872-1954), Violet Oakley (1874-1961), and Jessie Willcox Smith (1863-1935). In 1902, the three artists held their first group exhibition at the Plastic Club, a professional organization for women artists on Camac Street in Philadelphia. After their experience renting studio space at Bryn Mawr College to escape the summer heat of the city, they decided in 1902 to lease the Red Rose Inn in Villanova, where they lived and worked until 1906. The collection consists of correspondence, art, photographs, papers, and other miscellaneous materials.

Jeannette Ridlon Piccard, BMC class of 1918, was the first woman licensed to pilot a balloon in the United States, and the first woman to enter the stratosphere (with a flight that reached 57, 559 feet). She served as a consultant and lecturer for NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center from 1964-1970. At the age of 79 Piccard was ordained as a priest in the Episcopal Church, one of the "Philadelphia Eleven"- the first ordained female priests. The material in this collection consists of correspondence, writings by Picard, and writings of others, regarding her personal, religious, and aeronautical life.

The poet John Masefield was born on June 1, 1878 in Ledbury, Herefordshire, England. Masefield was best known for his sea poems, including "Sea Fever" and "Cargoes," and for his long, narrative poems, including "The Everlasting Mercy." He also wrote adventure novels, short stories, and works for children, as well as two autobiographical works. In 1930, he was appointed poet laureate of England, and was awarded the Order of Merit in 1935. Masefield died near Abingdon, Berkshire on 12 May 1967. The collection contains a number of letters, a small group of material about a musical composition by Malcolm Davidson based on Masefield's poem, "A Christmas Carol", prints and photographs.

Anne Truitt Papers, 1945-1997 (inclusive)

Anne Dean Truitt (1921-2004,) BMC 1943, was an artist and writer. Truitt's formal training as an artist began in 1948 when she studied sculpture at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Washington D. C. In the early 1960s Truitt began to develop what would become her signature style, applying layer upon layer of paint to hollow wooden structures. In the aftermath of two retrospective shows in the mid-1970s, Truitt began keeping detailed journals documenting the details of her life, her creative processes, her working methods, and her personal development. She converted the writing from one year into a book, Daybook, published in 1982. In 1986 more of her journal-writing was published as the book Turn. The 1991 retrospective led to her third book, Prospect, in 1996. The papers consist of manuscripts and drafts of Truitt's books and other writing, exhibition catalogs, correspondence, and records of travel.

Evelyn Jones Rich (BMC 1954) was the first Black residential student of Bryn Mawr College. While at Bryn Mawr, she was active in Students for Democratic Action the Bryn Mawr League, and the Self-Government Association. In 1954, she graduated with a BA in Political Science, and continued her education at Hunter College (CUNY) where she earned the MA in Social Studies. Rich later attended Columbia University where she earned the PhD in African History and Education. She has worked as a teacher, school administrator, and educational consultant throughout her life. Louise Heron Blair Daura (Bryn Mawr College 1927) was married to the Catalan painter Pierre Daura. He joined the Spanish Republican Army in 1937, and Louise wrote a series of letters to her family about going to visit Pierre while he was on leave in Barcelona in 1938. These letters vividly describe the living conditions and damage done to the towns of Spain during the Spanish Civil War. The collection includes letters to Louise while she was at Bryn Mawr as well as letters written to her from family and friends while she traveled in Europe during the 1920s. There are a series of letters that she wrote to her family while living in France after her marriage. The letters give rich descriptions of the life of an American living in Europe before and during the Spanish Civil War. The collection also contains Louise's essays and other writings from Bryn Mawr, giving a sense of what Bryn Mawr was like in the mid-1920s.

Pamela Colman Smith was an author, illustrator and stage designer. Born in London, she spent most of her youth in England and Jamaica. She was educated at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, which she left in 1897. In 1898, she moved to New York City, where she began selling her illustrations and exhibiting her work in galleries. She returned to England in 1900, where she designed sets for the London stage, and continued to exhibit her artwork. A significant part of Smith's career consisted of illustrating children's books and collections of folk tales, ballads and verse. Her published works include Widdicombe Fair (1899), Annancy Stories (1899), The Golden Vanity and the Green Bed (1899), and Chim-Chim: Folk Stories from Jamaica (1905). Claud Lovat Fraser was born in London on May 15, 1890 to Florence Margaret Fraser, an amateur artist, and Claud Fraser, a city solicitor. He became a clerk at his father's law firm but left in 1911 to seriously pursue art. In 1914, Fraser enlisted with the Inns of Court Officer Training Corps and was quickly commissioned to the 14th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. He suffered from poor health and was eventually discharged in 1919. In 1916, he met Grace Crawford and the two were married on February 6, 1917. Miss Crawford was born in Paris in 1889, daughter of Theron Clark Crawford, an American entrepreneur, and a highly trained amateur pianist. During the four years after their marriage, until Fraser's death in 1921, the two worked jointly on a number of theatre projects and had one daughter, Helen Catherine Adeline Lovat Fraser, born in 1918. Alfred Edward Housman, the English poet and classicist, was born on March 26, 1859 near Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. He was appointed to the Chair of Greek and Latin at University College, London in 1892. Housman soon began writing the series of poems which was eventually published as "A Shropshire Lad" in 1896 and later in 1922,"Last Poems" was published. In 1911, he became the professor of Latin at Trinity College, Cambridge where he taught for more than 30 years. Housman passed away from heart disease in April of 1936. Bryn Mawr alumna Theresa Helburn (B.A. 1908) had a long and distinguished career behind the scenes on Broadway, and made important contributions to the professions of film and television from the 1930s to the 1950s. As a producer with New York's Theatre Guild from 1919, Helburn served as a literary manager and casting director, before becoming a co-producer, with Lawrence Langner. The Theatre Guild specialized in bringing the highest-quality drama of Europe and America to Broadway stages. Margaret Ayer Barnes (1886-1967) was a graduate of Bryn Mawr College (class of 1907). She was a novelist, playwright, and short story writer. In her three years of service as the College's alumnae director, beginning in 1920, Barnes helped to organize the Summer School for Women Workers in Industry. Barnes' short stories were first published in 1926, and she continued to write consistently throughout the next decade. Barnes is especially well known for her contribution to the critically acclaimed stage production of Edith Wharton's Age of Innocence, as well as her novel Years of Grace (1930), for which Barnes won the Pulitzer Prize. Ralph Hodgson and Aurelia Bolliger Hodgson papers, 1896-1984 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Very little is known about the early life of Ralph Hodgson (1871-1962), a British poet. In the 1890s, he worked as a newspaper and magazine illustrator, signing some of his works 'Yorick', and, in 1913, founded "The Sign of the Flying Fame" publishers along with Claud Lovat Fraser and Holbrook Jackson. Hodgson published a variety of poetry volumes prior to joining that army at the beginning of World War I. In 1923, he accepted a position as a lecturer in English at Sendai University in Japan. It was here that he met his third wife, Aurelia Bolliger (1898-1984), an American born teacher at the Women's College of Sendai. The couple faced a variety of difficulties during the early years of their marriage, including Aurelia's young age, loss of job because of her relationship with Ralph, and her family's struggle to accept their marriage. Constance Maravell was a Bryn Mawr graduate of the class of 1965. In the years follower her time at graduate school at the University of Chicago, Maravell delved into the world of art. She adopted the name Zinnia to represent her artistic identiy, and has exhibited her work of high art photography in the Washington D.C. area numerous times. Zinnia's work has been recognized and praised in a number of newspapers and newsletters. This collection contains the clippings from the articles that acknowledged her work, as well as an assortment of pamphlets and booklets summarizing her pieces in exhibitions, and a few select photographs taken at one of Zinnia's exhibition openings.

Karl Detlev Jessen (1872-1919) was a professor of German Literature at Bryn Mawr College from 1910 to 1919. He was involved with the Socialist movement in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Karl D. Jessen papers house the records of Karl D. Jessen. This collection dates from 1872 to 1980, with bulk dates of 1890 to 1917. Frances Arnold was born in New York City in 1874, daughter of Francis and Augusta Arnold. After graduating the Brearly School, she attended Bryn Mawr College from 1893 to 1895, affiliating herself with the class of 1897. Upon leaving the College, she attended French finishing school and traveled abroad. In 1899 she returned to New York to teach mathematics at Brearly. Except for a brief stint supervising women building torpedos during World War I, Arnold remained at Brearly until 1930. She then retired to New Hampshire, where she was involved with community affairs. The Frances Arnold family letters comprise a collection of the personal correspondence of Frances Arnold, Bryn Mawr College class of 1897. The letters in the collection range from 1895 to 1902. The bulk of the collection is personal correspondence between Arnold and her family and Arnold's personal memorabilia.

George Aaron Barton taught at Haverford College as a lecturer for two years and at the same time joied the Bryn Mawr faculty as Associate Professor of Biblical literature and Semitic Languages, 1891. He taught at Bryn Mawr continuously as Professor of Biblical Literature and Semitic Languages until 1922 when he joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylcania as Professor of Semitic Languages. In addition, Dr. Barton was director of the American School for Oriental Research at Jerusalem, 1902-03, and at Baghdad, 1921-34; also Professor of New Testament Literature and Laguage at the Divinity School of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Philadelphia,, 1921-37. An acknowledged minister of the Society of Friends (Orothodox) from 1879-1918, Barton was ordained as a Deacon in the Episcopal Church in 1918 and priest the following year. Henry Joel Cadbury graduated from Haverford College (A.B. 1903) and Harvard University (M.A. 1904 and Ph.D. 1914). Cadbury served as a trustee and director of Bryn Mawr College for many years and was Chairman for the Board of Directors from 1956 to 1969. He was one of the foudners of the American Friends Service Committee in 1917 and Chairman of that organization 1928-34, 1944-60. AFSC won the Nobel Peace Prize along with Britain's Service Council in 1947. The Henry Joel Cadbury papers holds the papers of the AFSC Family Planning and Population Education Committee relating to a special report being prepared for publication on the subject of abortion. The collection, which is from around 1965-1971, sheds light on the Quaker opinion on abortion, contraceptives, and sex education during the late 1960s-early 1970s.

Elizabeth Miller Caldwell (1874-1945) was a member fo the Class of 1897 who took her A.B. in English and Latin. She lived in Merion Hall during her first three years at Bryn Mawr and then moved into Pembroke West for her senior year. Originally from Pittsburgh, she studied at Miss Baldwin's School in Bryn Mawr prior to enrolling at BMC. She married Gerard Fountain in 1898 and later sent her two daughters to Bryn Mawr College (Audrey Fountain, A.B. 1922, and Olivia Caldwell Fountain, A.B. 1924). The Letters of Elizabeth Miller Caldwell comprise a collection of eight letters written by Elizabeth Caldwell to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Caldwell. The letters span from November 14, 1894 to April 4, 1897, and discuss a wide range of topics, from student protests to SGA meetings.

Mary Whitall Worthington was a 1910 graduate of Bryn Mawr College and the president of the Bryn Mawr chapter of the Woman's Equal Suffrage League. She was the niece of Bryn Mawr president M. Carey Thomas, being the daughter of Thomas's sister, Grace Thomas Worthington. She grew up with her mother in England, after her parents' divorce in 1896, and returned to England during the summers while she was in college. Worthington was an ardent suffragist who met with several prominent suffragists of the day, including Anna Howard Shaw. After graduation, she attended the Johns Hopkins Medical School, but died as the result of congenital heart failure in January 1912. The Mary Whitall Worthington papers houses Worthington's personal papers and diaries. Her diaries, which cover April 1907 to November 1911, describe her time at Bryn Mawr College from late in her first year to her graduation, and then during her first year of medical school at Johns Hopkins University.

Susan FitzGerald was a member of the Bryn Mawr class of 1929, the daughter of Susan Walker FitzGerald, who founded the Self-Government Association. Susan FitzGerald taught Spanish and German from 1930-1945 before becoming involved with the United States Information Agency. She worked all over the world as the director of English language programs and teaching English. FitzGerald retired in 1972. The Susan FitzGerald papers house the personal papers of Susan FitzGerald. Jeannie Colston Howard was born in Richmond, Virginia on December 23, 1878. She attended Bryn Mawr College, graduating in 1901. After graduation, she taught at Shipley School and St. Margaret's. From 1905-1918, she was a teacher and then principal at Stuart Hall. Howard later pursued her masters in Latin at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1926. She was a member of Colonial Dames. Howard passed away in 1968. The Jeannie Colston Howard scrapbook contains Howard's one volume scrapbook. The scrapbook covers Howard's years at Bryn Mawr, from 1897 to 1901, and contains mostly personal correspondence, calling cards and invitations.

Elsie Kohn was born November 25, 1881. She attended Bryn Mawr College, graduating in 1904. She married Aaron S. Rauh in 1908 and had three children. Kohn was a civic leader who was extremely involved in the women's suffrage movement. She was one of the founders of the League of Women Voters and was also active in Planned Parenthood. Kohn died March 27th, 1972. The Elsie Kohn Rauh scrapbook contains Kohn's one volume scrapbook from her first two years at Bryn Mawr, 1900-1902. Kohn left Bryn Mawr in 1902 to care for her mother, so in addition to the typical memorabilia, this scrapbook also contains letters from friends regarding her decision to leave.

Tirzah Nichols attended the Friends' Central School in Philadelphia, as well as Miss Florence Baldwin's School in Bryn Mawr (now called The Baldwin School). She was a member of Bryn Mawr College's class of 1896, graduating with degrees in History and Political Science. After graduation, she returned to Miss Baldwin's School, this time as a science teacher (1896-1906). She later became a teacher of Culture of the Speaking Voice and a librarian at Miss Baldwin's School, which had then been renamed The Baldwin School (1906-1917). The Tirzah Nichols scrapbook contains Nichols' one volume scrapbook. The scrapbook spans the years from 1892 to 1902 and contains a lot of material, mostly musical programs and Bryn Mawr memorabilia. It provides useful insight into Bryn Mawr at the turn of the century.

Mildred Pressinger (later Kienbusch) graduated from Bryn Mawr College with an A.B. in Philosophy and Psychology. She was a member of the Mayflower Descendants, the National Society of Colonial Dames, Founder and Patriots, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also active in a number of charities in New York City. She married Carl Otto von Kienbusch, the owner of an internationally celebrated collection of medieval arms and armor. Mildred Kienbusch died in 1968. The Mildred Pressinger scrapbook houses a very large one-volume scrapbook containing a great deal of material from Pressinger's four years at Bryn Mawr College (1905-1909). The scrapbook contains a large amount of Bryn Mawr memorabilia.

Mary Ayer was a member of Bryn Mawr's class of 1901. While at college, Ayer was involved in varsity basketball, Mandolin and Banjo Club, and class plays. After graduating from Bryn Mawr, Ayer pursued graduated studies at Radcliffe (1901-1902) and Simmons College (1905-1906). In 1910, she married John Rousmaniere, a graduate of Harvard Law School. Ayer died in 1954. Ayer's one volume diary spans her freshman through junior years at college, from 1897-1900. However, only the first two of these were spent at Bryn Mawr; Ayer passed her junior year at Radcliffe College before returning to Bryn Mawr for her senior year. Ayer's diary offers insight into student athletics and academics, social life, and variations between Bryn Mawr and Radcliffe.

Marie A. Richards was born June 8, 1913. She was prepared at Gordon-Roney and Agnes Irwin, both in Philadelphia. She attended Bryn Mawr College, graduating in 1935. After graduation, she worked as Associate Editor for the American Philosophical Society until 1978. During that time she travelled all across the globe with her brother, attending geological conventions and sightseeing. She also worked as a laboratory assistant as Leeds and Northrup Company. After retiring, she moved to Philadelphia, where she volunteered with the Owl Book Shop. Richards died on April 7, 2009. The Marie Richards scrapbook contains Richards' one volume scrapbook. The scrapbook covers the years 1931 to 1936 and mainly consists of photographs and newspaper clippings.

Lydia Sharpless was born 1885, the daughter of Isaac Sharpless, then the president of Haverford College. She was prepared by Westtown Boarding School in Westtown, Pennsylvania and by private study. She attended Bryn Mawr College, graduating with the class of 1908 and holding the Foundation Scholarship from 1905-1908. While at school, she was highly involved in athletics, as the captain of the class hockey team and a member of the basketball and track teams, as well. After graduation, Sharpless worked part-time for a year in a Philadelphia settlement, then taught at Wykeham Rise, a girl's boarding school. She married Harvey C. Perry in 1911. Together they had 3 biological children, one of whom died young, and one adopted child. Sharpless died in 1932. The Lydia Sharpless Perry scrapbook contains Sharpless' one-volume scrapbook. The scrapbook contains material from 1903 to 1910 and contains the usual Bryn Mawr memorabilia, with an emphasis on hockey memorabilia.

While at Bryn Mawr, she was the secretary of the Self-Government Association and studied Languages (French, Italian, Spanish). After graduation, she worked as a magazine editor. Sturgis died on March 16, 1966. The Helen Rutgers Sturgis scrapbook contains Sturgis' one-volume scrapbook. The scrapbook, which covers Sturgis' first two years at Bryn Mawr (1901-1903), mostly contains personal memorabilia.
