Overview and metadata sections
Josephine Rothermal Bull graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1934. She continued her education at the University of Pennsylvania receiving a Masters of Social Work in 1936. The autograph collection was donated to Bryn Mawr College in 1979.
The Josephine Bull autograph collection consists of documents pertaining to and the hand-signed letters of prominent American figures of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The collection, which ranges from 1835-1929, is comprised of 29 ALSs, one LS, 6 TLSs, and 2 AQSs. In addition, there are two autograph books.
The collection contains 25 folders. The first two folders house autograph books, while the following folders house letters. These folders have been organized alphabetically by the last name of the writer.
Many of the letters concern explorer Henry Grant Bryant and the Melville-Bryant Drift Cask Experiment. Other notable persons associated with this collection include Martin van Buren, William Howard Taft, Herbert Hoover, Ulysses S. Grant, and James Buchanan. The first autograph album contains 26 signatures of U.S. Congressmen and various state officials from the 19th century. The second autograph album contains signatures of Schuyler Colfax, Roscoe Conkling, Thomas Wentworth Higginson, and William T. Sherman.
This collection is notable for the range of autographs of prominent American figures it features; however, the letters themselves may also be of interest. The collection is not centered on one subject, but many of the letters relate to political matters in Philadelphia during the turn of the twentieth century.
