Abstract:
Anna Melissa Graves was a writer, teacher, world traveler, and internationalist. From the 1920s to the 1940s Graves traveled through Africa, Central and South America, China, Europe, and the Middle East. She taught school in many of these places and maintained a voluminous correspondence with the teachers, acquaintances, and former students she met on her travels.

Hannah Clothier Hull Papers, 1889-1958 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Hannah Clothier Hull (1872-1958), was one of the founders of the Woman's Peace Party and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. She served as a national officer of the WILPF for nearly forty years. Hull was also active in other social reform movements. A member of a well-to-do Quaker family, Hannah Clothier graduated from Swarthmore College in 1891. She first worked at a Philadelphia settlement house and then entered the graduate program in social work at Bryn Mawr College. In the following year Hannah Clothier married William Isaac Hull, a fellow pacifist and professor of political science at Swarthmore. Hannah Clothier Hull worked in the woman suffrage campaign and women's rights, had some interest in temperance, was a member of the Friends Peace Committee of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, and was on the board of the American Friends Service Committee (1928-1947).

Civilian Public Service Union Records, 1944-1946 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Civilian Public Service Union was organized at the beginning of 1944 in the CPS camp at Big Flats, New York. Men at other camps and units quickly joined the group. CPSU, a union for "drafted workers conscientiously opposed to war," was formed to provide an organized means of communication and group action among men in all sections of CPS and to combat the waste and injustice of the CPS system itself. Ralph C. Rudd served as chairman from late 1944 until CPSU was dissolved in early 1946.

The Peace Association of Friends in America was organized in 1867 by Orthodox Friends in the New York, Baltimore, North Carolina, Ohio, Indiana, Western and Iowa Yearly Meetings in reaction to the Civil War, with its mission being to convince Friends and others that war was unchristian, inhumane and unnecessary.

Abstract:
Bulk of the collection is in printed or mimeographed form, with some typed or photocopied items also present. Included are pamphlets, tracts, leaflets, articles and reprints, reports, speeches, statements, form letters, announcements and papers relating to conferences and other meetings, and clippings. The collection was microfilmed in 1979. In 2003, a large amount of material duplicated elsewhere in the Peace Collection was removed, so that the material in the boxes no longer corresponds to the material on the microfilm. Primary source material was transferred to the appropriate record group in Friends Historical Library. Abstract:
Lydia G. Wentworth, was a writer and ardent peace advocate who lived most of her life in Brookline, Massachusetts. Despite illness which confined her to bed for over thirty years, she carried on a prolific correspondence and contributed hundreds of articles to newspapers and magazines. Wentworth was on the advisory committee of the Women's Peace Society, and was a member of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, the Fellowship of Reconciliation, the Association to Abolish War, and the Boston League of Women Voters.

Abstract:
In 1902, Edwin Ginn began publication of an International Library to promote knowledge about peace. In July 1910, he established the International School of Peace which, in December, became the World Peace Foundation. Its purpose was to promote better international relations and world order by preparing and distributing specialized literature, mostly to college and university libraries, and by holding conferences. It was closely allied with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and supported formation of the League of Nations and the Permanent Court of International Justice and, later, the United Nations.

Abstract:
Homer A. Jack (1916-1993) was a Unitarian Universalist clergyman and denominational official who sought to apply religious values to national and international affairs. Jack was executive secretary of the Chicago Council Against Racial and Religious Discrimination (1943-1948), executive director of SANE (1960-1964), and secretary general of the World Conference on Religion and Peace (1970-1983). He had been minister of churches in Lawrence, Kansas (1942-1943), Evanston, Illinois (1948-1959), and Winnetka, Illinois (1984-1987) and served as director of the Division of Social Responsibility of the Unitarian Universalist Association (1964-1970). Jack also chaired the NGO Committee on Disarmament (at UN Headquarters) from 1973-1984. Homer Jack "retired" to Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, in Januaryuary 1987. Abstract:
E. Raymond Wilson (1896-1987), a Quaker peace lobbyist, helped found the Friends Committee on National Legislation in 1943 and served as its Executive Secretary until 1962. He also helped organize the Committee on Militarism in Education in 1925. From 1931 to 1943, he served as Field and Education Secretary of the Peace Section of the American Friends Service Committee. He was the author of two books. The papers of E. Raymond Wilson contain personal and professional correspondence, biographical material, writings including drafts for two books, notes on travel, program of meetings and conferences he attended, a subject file, photographs, scrapbooks, sound tapes, and memorabilia. Promoting Enduring Peace was founded in 1952, with headquarters in Woodmont, Connecticut. Principles of the organization included: peace with freedom and justice for all, support for the United Nations, and belief in religion as the fundamental force for righteousness. Today PEP's mission is to conduct peace education promoting the advent of a harmonious planetary commonwealth through the convergence of the worldwide movements for disarmament, social justice, and environmental stewardship as the foundation of sustainable peace; through education and citizen diplomacy. The PEP established the Gandhi Peace Award.

Horace Alexander was born in England in 1889 and died in the United States in 1989. As a life-long member of the Religious Society of Friends, he was interested in Indian rights and worked with Gandhi and others for many years to lobby for it. He wrote books about Gandhi and other subjects.

Dorothy H. Hutchinson Papers, 1942-1980 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Dorothy Hewitt Hutchinson (l905-l984) began to gain influence in the peace movement when her pamphlet A Call to Peace Now was printed by the Friends in l943. That summer, Hutchinson and a small group of people started the Peace Now Movement, using her pamphlet to rally support for the principle of a negotiated settlement rather than unconditional surrender of the Axis powers. This group included George W. Hartmann, a psychology professor at Columbia, and John Collett. Hutchinson also worked to promote the United Nations and helped organize a local chapter of the United World Federalists Hutchinson was active in the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and became president of the U.S. Section of WILPF in l96l, serving until l965. She then served as chairman of International WILPF from l965 until l968. Hutchinson was an activist in civil rights and civil liberties as well as in the peace movement.

Lella Secor Florence became a pacifist while serving as a journalist on the Henry Ford Peace Expedition (1915-1916) and then participated in several peace organizations focused on keeping the United States out of World War I. She was active in the British section of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and in the birth control movement there and wrote Birth Control on Trial.

CCCO developed a nationwide network of military and draft counselors and attorneys to assist conscientious objectors. Most active during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, the CCCO promoted such issues as amnesty, repatriation, and counter-recruitment.Operations were suspended in late October 2009. As of 2010, some of their counseling service has been taken over by the GI Rights Hotline.

Abstract:
Ann Morrissett Davidon (1925-2004), was a writer, editor, educator, pacifist and peace activist through her entire life. William Cooper Davidon(1927- 2013), was a professor of physics at Haverford College and (retired 1994), pacifist, peace activist. The two were married in 1963 and both continued to be very active in peace, pacifist, anti-Vietnam War, and social justice organizations. They advocated and practiced war-tax resistance. In 1971, William Davidon was named an "unindicted co-conspirator" in a plot to kidnap Henry Kissenger. Ann Davidon remained active in peace issues for her entire life.

American School Citizenship League Collected Records, 1908-1930 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Founded in 1908 by Fannie Fern Andrews, the American School Peace League was intended to promote peace by introducing principles of international justice and fraternity into the curricula of U.S. schools. The League distributed circulars, leaflets and booklets for classroom use, including poetry, endorsements for peace from statesmen and military leaders, accounts of peace activity, information regarding other peoples and cultures, and a series of programs designed to further the message of international peace. The League continued to function until the death of Fannie Fern Andrews in 1950.

Fannie Fern Phillips Andrews founded the American School Peace League (which changed its name to the American School Citizenship League in 1919). She was also a founding member of the Woman's Peace Party, and was one of the delegates to the International Committee of the International Congress of Women at The Hague in 1915. She was appointed by President Roosevelt to serve as a delegate to international conferences on education in 1934 and 1936.

Heloise Brainerd was connected with the Pan American Union in Washington, D.C. from 1909 to 1935. In 1935 Brainerd became the chair of the Committee on the Americas, and chair of the Division of Inter-American Work, for the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. Brainerd's goal was to draw women from Latin America into the peace movement, and to do this she traveled widely in the Americas. Brainerd was made Honorary Vice President of the U.S. Section of the WILPF in 1954.

Abstract:
Belva Ann McNall Lockwood (1830-1917), was the first woman attorney to practice before the Supreme Court. She personally lobbied members of Congress to pass a special act admitting women to the bar of the Court, and first practiced before the Court in 1879. Lockwood ran for the U.S. presidency in 1884 and 1888, being the first woman to have a complete, national campaign for that office. From the 1870s onward Lockwood was active with the radical peace group, the Universal Peace Union, representing the organization at several international peace congresses.

Abstract:
A.J. Muste (1885-1967), was ordained a minister in the Dutch Reformed Church, but later (1917), he became a member of the Society of Friends. During World War I, Muste's refusal to abandon his pacifist position led to his forced resignation from the Central Congregational Church in Newtonville, Massachusetts. Muste's involvement as a labor organizer began in 1919 when he led strikes in the textile mills of Lawrence, Massachusetts. He became the director of the Brookwood Labor College in Katonah, New York, remaining there until 1931. He then served as national chairman of the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR) from 1926 to 1929. Muste was director of the Presbyterian Labor Temple from 1937-1940. In 1940 he became executive director of the FOR, a position he held until his retirement in 1953, when he was made director emeritus. Victor Paschkis (1898-1991), born in Vienna, was a Quaker, a mechanical engineer, and a professor. He was the founder, and first president, of the Society for Social Responsibility in Science. He also served as the chairman of the National Friends Conference on Race Relations, the American Friends Service Committee's Race Relations Committee, and the Committee on Fair Employment. Paschkis taught at Columbia University.

Wilhelm Söllmann Papers, 1901-1991 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Friedrich Wilhelm Sollmann (1881-1951), German labor leader, journalist, and Reichminister. Exiled from Germany in 1933, Sollmann sought refuge in the United States and eventually became an American citizen, adopting William F. Sollmann as his preferred form of address. Sollmann was a member of the German delegation to the Versailles Peace Treaty conference and he served as a representative to the Constitutional National Assembly at Weimar. In 1920 Sollmann was elected to the first of his eight terms in the Reichstag where he was to be a prominent member of the committee on foreign affairs. Sollmann's career as a lecturer and advisor on Germany and international affairs commenced in 1937 and continued until the time of his death.

Henry J. Cadbury (1883-1974) was a distinguished Biblical scholar, teacher, and a member of the Society of Friends. Cadbury was one of the founders of the American Friends Service Committee. He served as its chairman from both 1928 to 1934 and again from 1944 to 1960. Cadbury supervised famine relief both in the United States and in Europe.

Peoples Mandate to Governments to End War was an international campaign begun on September 6, 1935, by the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom to express such overwhelming opposition to war that governments would not dare resort to it as a means of solving disputes between nations. By the end of the decade the Peoples Mandate became an independent organization, headed by Mabel Vernon, and focused on peace and connections between women and women's organizations in the Americas.

Abstract:
[Anna] Ruth Fry was an activist and a writer born into a prominent Quaker family in England. From 1914-1924, she served as general secretary of the Friends Relief Commission, which provided help for refugees and others ravaged by World War I. Fry wrote about her experiences in A Quaker Adventure (1926). She was also the first chairman of the Russian Famine Relief Fund in 1921. Fry went on to write numerous books, pamphlets and tracts, on a variety of Quaker and peace topics. She died on April 26, 1962.

The People's Council of America for Democracy and Peace grew out of the First American Conference for Democracy and Terms of Peace, held in New York, May 1917. It was organized to work for an early and liberal peace at the end of the World War. It favored world organizations, and disapproved of conscription. Officers were Louis Lochner, Emily Greene Balch, Rebecca Shelley, Scott Nearing, David Starr Jordan, Crystal Eastman, Eugene Debs, John Haynes Holmes, Henry W.L. Dana, Max Eastman, and Lella Secor Florence.

Abstract:
Jeannette Rankin (1880-1973), was the first woman to serve in Congress (1917-1919). She was an active suffragist and later worked in peace organizations such as the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and the National Council for Prevention of War. Rankin founded the Georgia Peace Society in the 1940s, and led the Jeannette Rankin Brigade, an all-women's protest march against the Vietnam war shortly before her death.
