Keep America Out of War Congress Collected Records, 1938-1942 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Keep America Out of War Congress was founded in 1938 (as the Keep America Out of War Comittee), by several leading peace organizations. The Congress was to pursue a joint, minimum six-point peace program. The aims of this program included the removal of U.S. ships and nationals from belligerent zones, a war referendum, the abandonment of plans for conscription and industrial mobilization, and greater economic and social justice at home and abroad. The Keep America Out of War Congress was dissolved in 1942, and was reorganized as the Post War World Council.

Abstract:
Priscilla Hannah Peckover (1833-1931) devoted much of her life toward mobilization for peace. In 1879 she formed the Wisbech Peace Association to promote the development of women in work for peace. This group of men and women became a center for peace activity in Great Britain. They concentrated on establishing peace by means of arbitration and disarmament, based on Christian theology.

League of Nations Union Collected Records, 1915-1945 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The League of Nations Union was formed on October 13, 1918 by the joining of the League of Nations Society with the Free Nations Society. The League of Nations Society began in 1916 with the purpose of examining the forms of international organization that would be possible at the end of WWI. It lobbied for an agreement among countries that would serve as a basis for permanent peace by providing for settlement of disputes, mutual defense, and the observance of international treaties. The influence of the LoNU waned during WWII, and in 1946 it merged into the already formed United Nations Association of Great Britain. Previously the League of Nations Union had been a member of the International Federation of League of Nations Societies, which had its headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.

George Nasmyth and Florence Nasmyth Papers, 1911-1937 (inclusive)

Abstract:
George W. Nasmyth was educated at Cornell, Berlin, Gottingen, Heidelburg and Zurich. He dedicate his life to the cause of international understanding and peace. In 1919, he attended the Paris Peace Conference, and to organize the first meeting since the outbreak of the war of the World Alliance for Friendship Through the Churches. He died of a typhus infection at the age of 39, on September 20, 1920. Florence Nasmyth was a writer on peace issues.

Abstract:
The War Resisters League is a pacifist organization whose members are against all war. Witnessing the establishment of the War Resisters' International in Europe in 1921, and sensing a need for a similar organization in the United States, Dr. Jessie Wallace Hughan established the War Resisters League as an independent organization. The War Resisters League membership pledge, which has remained essentially unchanged since its inception, reads: "The War Resisters League affirms that war is a crime against humanity. We therefore are determined not to support any kind of war, international or civil, and to strive non-violently for the removal of all causes of war." The League seeks to end war and social injustice through pacifist and nonviolent tactics.

The United Peace Chest of Philadelphia coordinated and integrated Philadelphia organizations interested in promoting international peace. The name was often shortened to "United Peace Chest." The UPC was founded in 1938, though it was conceptualized in 1936 at a meeting of the Pennsylvania Branch of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.

Abstract:
Turn Toward Peace was founded in 1961 as a cooperative national effort of about 60 peace and liberal internationalist organizations; Norman Thomas was Chairman of TTP, and Robert Gilmore was the Executive Director. There eventually were offices in several large cities and 38 national organizations were affiliated with the organization. But by 1963, serious discord divided TTP and several years later a group split off to became the World Without War Council; some regional offices retained the name of "Turn Toward Peace."

Abstract:
Peace Action, Inc. was founded about 1979 as the Disarmament Action Network (DAN). The name of the organization was changed name to Peace Action, Inc. about 1985. The group was begun informally by members of the American Friends Service Committee's Cambridge. Massachusetts office and was affiliated with the Walk for Peace, the Human Race/Runners Around the World, and Give Peace a Dance. Many of the organization's actions concerned the anti-nuclear movement of the period. Peace Action, Inc. was not connected to the national organization, Peace Action.

The Albert Einstein Institution was founded in 1983 and is dedicated to advancing the study and use of strategic nonviolent action in conflicts throughout the world. It is committed to the defense of freedom, democracy, and the reduction of political violence through the use of nonviolent action. The principle founder of the Albert Einstein Institution is Dr. Gene Sharp. To further its mission, the Institution has supported research projects, actively consulted with resistance and pro-democracy groups, and worked to publicize the power and potential of nonviolent struggle around the world through educational materials, analyses, translations, workshops, and media visibility. The Albert Einstein Institution was named after the scientist, Albert Einstein and continues his struggle to resolve the continuing problems of political violence.

Abstract:
Norman Jehiel Whitney (1891-1967) was a Quaker teacher, writer and devoted peace worker. From 1919-1957 he helped establish, and directed for many years, the Syracuse Peace Council. He left Syracuse in 1957 to work for the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) in peace education. Whitney's major peace work was in the area of counseling conscientious objectors to war (COs), particularly those in Civilian Public Service (CPS) camps. In 1941 he helped establish the New York State Board for Civilian Public Service, which attempted to counsel and assist Conscientious Objectors in New York state.

The Peace Action collection is a continuation of the SANE and SANE Education Fund (DG 58) collection, which also resides at the SCPC (the papers of the Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign are at the University of Missouri at St. Louis). It documents the merger of SANE and the NWFC, as well as the goals and work of the merged organization, through meeting minutes, correspondence, program files, press clippings and other publicity, statements and communications with Congress and other leaders, as well as publications and resources in other formats. Abstract:
In 1986 six hundred people marched across the United States to demonstrate their opposition to the world-wide nuclear arms race. The march took nine months from California to Washington, D.C. The marchers wrote: "we will create a non-violent focus for positive change; the imperative being that nuclear weapons are politically, socially, economically and morally unjustifiable, and that, in any number, they are unacceptable." The GPM was also a traveling intentional and communal society.

More than 800 organizations--human rights, environmental, gender, disarmament-- have endorsed the HAP campaign.
