Wilmer J. and Mildred Binns Young Papers, 1909-2014 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Wilmer J. Young (1887-1983), a Quaker teacher and peace activist born in Iowa, was involved in post World War I reconstruction in France and Poland. He married Mildred Binns in 1922, and together they worked with AFSC work camps and cooperative farms until he began to teach at Pendle Hill in 1955. The collection contains primarily journals and correspondence from his time in France.

Abstract:: This collection includes letters and printed materials relating to Rufus Jones. Included are photocopies of letters commenting on or criticizing The American Friend of which Rufus Jones was editor. Among these are a letter from Henry Stanley Neuman, editor of The Friend, regarding the state of the Society in England, and a letter from Walter Malone relating events at Ohio Yearly Meeting in 1894. Letters from R.L. Kelly, Joseph Moore, David Hadley, and Thomas Newlin discuss The American Friend, Friends University in Wichita, Kansas, and Quaker doctrine. A letter from J. Rendel Harris presents an issue of Biblical translation. Also included are drafts of Jones' article, Are We Ready, letters concerning its release, and Richmond P. Miller's introduction to the publication, On Your Marks! Get Set! Various personal letters to Rufus Jones and a transcript copy of his remarks at Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, entitled We Must Help Answer Our Prayers, are also included.

Abstract:: This is an artificial collection of papers concerning John Jackson, his spiritual teachings, and his religious mission to the West Indies. Included are essays by an unknown author, regarding John Jackson's views on Quaker ministry and doctrine as presented in his work"A Dissertation.. on Christian Ministry." An eight part manuscript entitled "Some account of the life and labors of John Jackson" is also unsigned. Also included is a bound volume of copies of letters written by John Jackson to his wife, Rachel, while he travelled on a religious mission in the West Indies with George Truman in 1840 and 1841. These letters describe the West Indies in detail and relate John Jackson's views on slavery and the difficulties they experienced as Hicksites. The original of one of these letters is also included.

Abstract:: A Friends World Conference Committee, sponsored by the Fellowship Council of the American Friends Service Committee, was established in 1932 to promote better understanding among Friends world wide. The representatives at the Second World Conference of Friends, held at Swarthmore and Haverford Colleges, Pa., in 1937, approved the establishment of a continuing international organization, a Friends World Committee, to promote international contacts and cooperation among Friends. In 1958, it was formalized as Friend World Committee for Consulation which meets triennially at different locations all over the world. FWCC's World Office is in London, England, and it has four sections: Africa, Americas, Asia and West Pacific, and Europe amd Middle East. FWCC's Section of the Americas is based in Philadelphia, Pa. Abstract:: The Stackhouse family was a Pennsylvania and New Jersey Quaker family with roots in the earliest settlement of America. The papers include diaries, ledgers, correspondence and other family papers and voluminous genealogical research conducted by Powell Stackhouse, Jr. They were united by the descendants of two sons of Amos and Mary (Powell) Stackhouse who shared an interest in family history. Powell Stackhouse, Jr., (1827-1900) was a real estate lawyer and conveyancer who pursued a "scientific" method of genealogical research in the 1890s. His cousin, Dr. Asa Matlack Stackhouse (1845-1916) also was interested in publishing a family genealogy, a project that was assumed but not completed by his son, William R. Stackhouse. Of special interest are family letters including a group which concerns Sharon Boarding School in Darby, Pennsylvania, and a small number of account books and diaries.

Abstract:: Contains the collected correspondence of the Bringhurst family, largely compiled by C. Marshall Taylor. It includes correspondence, 1780-1806, of Philadelphia Quaker businessman James Bringhurst and his letters received from John Murray of New York City. Bringhurst corresponded with family and prominent friends including John Dickinson, Job Scott, Nathan Hunt, James Pemberton, Jesse Kersey, Lindley Murray and Moses Brown. Of particular interest are descriptions of life in Philadelphia and the conditions of free blacks, as well as Quaker religious and social concerns and visits from traveling ministers. Abstract:: The collection contains unpublished writings by Burton Alva Konkle, author and historian. The bulk of the material concerns James Wilson, signer of the Declaration of Independence and one of the six original justices appointed by George Washington to the Supreme Court of the United States. Also included is a manuscript on David Lloyd, William Penn's personal lawyer, Attorney General of Pennsylvania, and Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

The Harned photograph collection, 1911-1992 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Harned was a non-profit boarding home for the elderly in Moylan, PA, under the care of Media Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. It operated under the direction of The Harned Committee. It was established in 1940 through the bequest of Quaker sisters, Phebe and Katherine Harned, and laid down in 1994. The collection contains loose and mounted photographs, clippings, and a scrapbook depicting residential life.

Friends General Conference Photos, 1894-1997 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Founded in 1900, when Hicksite yearly meetings joined together, the FGC is dedicated to holding annual meetings intended to nurture Quaker faith, practice, and inclusivity. In this collection, dated from 1894 to 1997, the yearly FGC meetings are photographed and presented in loose black and white and color photographs that show conference attendees and locations.

Abstract:: Donald Carré Turner (1909-1989) was a construction executive, a genealogist, and an alumnus of Swarthmore College. This collection, dating from the 1890s to the 1970s, contains a wide variety of photograph types, for the most part depicting gatherings and individual people through portraits, but there are also some miscellaneous sights/people depicted and some landscapes (e.g. Swarthmore).

Rogerenes of New England photograph collection, 1940

Abstract:: This collection consists of images relating to the Rogerenes, a pacifist religious sect founded by John Rogers (1648-1721) in New England in the late 1670s. These materials were collected by Ellen Starr Brinton during her tenure as Curator of the Swarthmore College Peace Collection (1935-1951); she wrote several articles on the Rogerenes and compiled an extensive bibliography of sources.
