Abstract:
Ralph H. Kelley (1928-2004) was appointed United States Bankruptcy Judge in the Sixth Federal Judicial Circuit in 1969. In 1993 he retired as Chief Judge of the Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee but remained the court's senior judge. He was a member of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Clerks and the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, where he served as President from 1985 to 1986. In 1980, Ralph Kelley was appointed to the Committee on the Budget of the Judicial Conference of the United States, where he served until 1990. Abstract:
Kenneth N. Klee spent his career analyzing bankruptcy law and advocating for pro-debtor reforms to the Bankruptcy Code. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1974 and joined to the California bar in 1975. He began his career as Associate Counsel for the Subcommittee on Civil and Constitutional Rights, a subunit of the House of Representatives' Committee on the Judiciary, where he advised Congress and helped draft legislation related to bankruptcy reform in the 1970s. He was also a consultant to the House Judiciary Committee from 1977 to 1982 and the Department of Justice from 1983 to 1985. Klee was a member of the National Bankruptcy Conference, an association of scholars and practitioners committed to the study of bankruptcy legislation and reform, where he was chair of the Committee on Legislation from 1992 to 1999. Abstract:
Edward Weinfeld (1901-1988) graduated from the New York University School of Law in 1921. In 1950, he was appointed to the Federal bench for the Southern District of New York, a position he held for the rest of his career. In addition to his career as author, professor, and judge, Weinfeld served on the Commission on Bankruptcy Laws of the United States in the 1970s, an organization appointed by Congress in 1970 to conduct a sweeping study of current bankruptcy law. The collection, 1972-1978, includes correspondence, reports, photocopies of legislation, and related material regarding Weinfeld's activity as a member of the Commission on Bankruptcy Laws of the United States and the Ad Hoc Committee on Bankruptcy Rules in the United States, two task forces charged by Congress to analyze bankruptcy law and propose legislative reform. Abstract:
Joseph L. Cosetti was appointed United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Western District of Pennsylvania in 1980, where he served as Chief Judge until 1994. He served as President of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges (NCBJ) from 1991 to 1992. The NCBJ, which provides continuing legal education to judges, lawyers and other involved professionals, aims to secure a greater degree of quality and uniformity in the administration of the bankruptcy system and to improve the practice of law in the bankruptcy courts. Papers in the collection span the period of 1972-2001, with the majority of the documents created in the years 1989-1992. Chiefly represented are materials created by the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges and collected by the Office of the President from 1989 to 1992.

Judge Arthur N. Votolato was the first bankruptcy judge to sit in Rhode Island, and for 44 years, he was the only U.S. bankruptcy judge to serve the state. He served on the First Circuit Bankruptcy Appellate Panel, Massachusetts and Maine panels. He was Chief Judge, Massachusetts' B.A.P. from 1981 to 1984. The Judge Arthur N. Votolato papers is a small collection of material relating to Votolato's work in bankruptcy law. Randall J. Newsome attended Boston University for his Bachelor of Arts in 1972 and the University of Cincinnati College of Law for his Juris Doctor in 1975. With 28 years of experience serving as a settlement and bankruptcy judge, Judge Newsome is best known for his intelligent and pragmatic approach to resolving complex matters and he is frequently sought out as a national speaker on topics related to bankruptcy. Judge Newsome devoted much of his career handling local and national bankruptcy issues. Abstract:
The Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) was the result of a joint project between the American Law Institute (ALI) and the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Law (NCCUSL). Work on the UCC began in 1945 in response to a perceived need by members of both ALI and NCCUSL to consolidate a number of uniform laws, previously enacted by NCCUSL, related to commercial transactions. NCCUSL was established in 1891 for the purpose of codifying state law by creating uniform laws and model acts. ALI was founded in 1923 in response to a perceived uncertainty and complexity in American Law. The Institute had previously developed a codification of particular areas of the law, known as the Restatement of the Law. Thus, cooperation between ALI and NCCUSL on the UCC presented a likely partnership. The first version of the UCC was approved in 1951. The Model Penal Code, first completed in 1962 and revised and expanded over the next 20 years, played a role in the revision and codification of criminal law. The Chief Reporter on the project was Herbert Wechsler. A Criminal Law Advisory Committee was established to provide the reportorial staff with guidance in the drafting of the Code. A Proposed Official Draft was published in 1962. This version generated wide response among legislatures and courts, prompting a revision and expansion of the code's commentaries that began in 1976. A final version of the Model Penal Code, with revised commentaries, was published in 1985. Abstract:
Bernard G. Segal graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School (now known as the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School) in 1931. Segal became the youngest Deputy Attorney General in Pennsylvania's history in 1932, the first Jewish lawyer elected Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association in 1952, and the first Jewish president of the American Bar Association in 1969. Segal also co-chaired the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and headed the Office of Economic Opportunity's Advisory Committee on Legal Services to the Poor. The Bernard G. Segal papers document all of Segal's activities outside of his work as a lawyer at Schnader, Harrison, Segal, and Lewis. This includes correspondence, reports, and minutes from his professional associations, governmental appointments, and his civic work.

A. Leo Levin, born in 1919 received his B.A. from Yeshiva University in 1939. He attended the University of Pennsylvania Law School and received his J.D. in 1942. Levin then took his first teaching job at the University of Iowa where he taught for two years before returning to his alma mater Penn Law School. Levin taught at Penn Law until his appointment as Director of the Federal Judicial Center in 1977. The Judge Joe Lee papers, 1961-2012, consist of material from Lee's active involvement in bankruptcy organizations and legislation. Joe Lee received his law degree from the University of Kentucky in 1955. He served as counsel to the Congressional Labor Subcommittee for the U.S. House of Representatives before being appointed a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge on September 1, 1961. He was one of the longest serving bankruptcy judges in the nation and played a pivotal role in the enactment of the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 1978. The collection includes correspondence, minutes, and reports from the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, drafts of bills and correspondence regarding bankruptcy legislation, and Lee's writings on the history of bankruptcy law.

Froelich Rainey Director's Office records, 1947-1977 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Rainey was appointed Director of the University Museum in 1947 and maintained the position until his retirement in 1976. He also served as a Professor of Anthropology at the University. Among his many accomplishments as Director, Rainey is responsible for the institution of Expedition Magazine. He developed and hosted the television show "What in the World?" which ran either locally or nationally for a total of fifteen years. In 1964, he served as a contributor to the show "Sunday" on NBC reporting the "archaeology news." The Froelich Rainey Administrative records consist of sixty-four archival boxes of correspondence divided into two series; alphabetical and chronological. The majority of the letters are in the alphabetical files with the chronological files reflecting the time from February 1968 to November 1969.

Abstract:
The Education Department was responsible for organizing and administering many of the Penn Museum's public outreach and educational programs between 1921 and 2010. The department was also responsible for maintaining the Penn Museum's film collection from the 1920s to 1987 and for administering the sale of books and objects for children between 1930 and 1972. Holdings span from 1919 to 2002 and include a wide variety of materials created by the department's staff including, but not limited to: administrative reports, correspondence, inventories, press clippings, press releases, information packets, teaching aids, and radio scripts.

Records of the Registrar's Office, 1893-1981 (inclusive)

Abstract:
From the earliest days the Museum of the University of Pennsylvania kept records of the artifacts donated and acquired through expeditions. This was originally the responsibility of the curator in each section and resulted in huge, hand-written registers of the collections. In 1929, the system was transferred to a centralized numerical card catalogue under the supervision of Geraldine M. Bruckner the Museum's first Registrar. The responsibilities of the Registrar included insurance, shipping and loans as well as numbering and describing collections. The records of the Office of the Registrar fill seven archival boxes and one card file. The materials did not have an innate order when processed but like documents were filed together in processing and the series describe the major duties of the office. Abstract:
The American Section was one of the first to evolve during the early development of the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. The University Archaeological Association established in 1887 and later, the American Exploration Society, established in 1892, exhibited several small collections in College Hall before the building campaign for the museum began. Charles Abbott was the first curator of the section succeeded by Henry C. Mercer and then Stewart Culin who was also named Director in 1899. Each succeeding curator was responsible for adding collections, many of them representing their own expeditions in the United States, Alaska, Mexico, Central America and South America. Records in the files are dated from 1826 through the 1980s. The transfer of materials to the Archives took place piecemeal and without a central organization. The current re-processing placed the files into three series, Deaccessions and Loans, Collectors and Collections and Exhibits.

Abstract:
Gregory L. Possehl, known for his discoveries in India and Pakistan, was born in Tacoma, Washington in 1941 and studied at the University of Washington and the University of Chicago attaining his Ph.D.in anthropology from the latter in 1974. Possehl's field work in Pakistan and India explored the Harappan civilization who populated the Gujarat region of India including the sites of Rojdi, Oriyo Timbo, and Babar Kot from 2500 BC to 2000 BC. Possehl was funded for his work from the late 1970s to the mid 1990s by the Smithsonian Institution and the National Science Foundation. Dr. Possehl is also a noted professor at Penn in the Departments of Anthropology and Oriental Studies and a curator in the Asian section of the Penn Museum. The Solomon H. Katz Alaska papers consist of documents related to a series of studies and surveys that Dr. Katz and his colleagues conducted in Barrow and Norton Sound, Alaska between 1969 and 1973. The research was intended to examine the effects of rapid cultural and socio-economic change on the native population, specifically in the areas of physical and mental health. Many of the surveys were not conducted by Katz, but were subsequently used in his research. In the Norton Sound projects, Katz served as a consultant.

Abstract:
The Cape Nome expedition collection was donated to the University Museum by the author himself, John Bockstoce. The collection documents Bockstoce’s records and analysis of his archeological findings in Cape Nome fom 1969-1974. It consists of five series: field notes, drawings, photographs, reports and publications, and oversized documents. The expedition was conducted by Bockstoce for the purpose writing a dissertation on the cultures of the Arctic and obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Oxford, which he achieved in 1974. This expedition was advised by Dr. Froelich Rainey of the University Museum, University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Douglas Anderson of the Haffenreffer Museum of Brown University, and Dr. Derek Roe of Oxford University.

Ruben Reina was born in 1924 in Argentina and educated at the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His first appointment was as an Instructor of Anthropology and Sociology at Women's College at the University of North Carolina. Dr. Reina followed this teaching experience with an Assistant Professorship in Anthropology at the University of Puerto Rico for the academic year 1956-1957 and then assumed an Assistant Professorship in the Anthropology Department of the University of Pennsylvania. Ruben E. Reina's fieldwork began while he was an undergraduate with expeditions in the Guatemalan Highlands, Mexico, and a mountain community in North Carolina. The Gordion Project collection documents the University of Pennsylvania survey and excavation of the ancient site of Gordion in central Turkey from 1947 until 2008. Collection series include excavation and conservation records under the authority of project directors Rodney S. Young (1950-1974), Keith R. DeVries (1975-1987) and G. Kenneth Sams (1988-2008) as well as fundraising and publication records during this period. Significant gaps and omissions in documentation occur after about 1990. The textual records are followed by photographs from the excavation site taken mostly between 1950 and 1975. Additional graphic material and field notebooks remain to be added to this collection.

Abstract:
Born in Trinidad in 1913, Jacob Elder was a primary school tescher and community development officer before attending Penn to study for his doctorate in folklore. Elder specialized in the traditional music of Trinidad and Tobago. In addition to his scholarly studies, Elder worked to develop the Steel Band and song competitions in his native land to encourage the restless youth to find purpose and fulfillment. Manuscript holdings include approximately two linear feet of cultural material, research, working manuscript and disertation, song, lyric and interview transcriptions, folktales, stories and scripts. Abstract:
Roger D. Abrahams is a native of Philadelphia, PA. He received his B.A. at Swarthmore College, M.A. at Columbia University, and Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1986 he came to teach in the English and Anthropology Departments at the University of Pennsylvania following many years at the University of Texas and Scripps and Pitzer Colleges. While at Penn he served as the Founding Director for the Center for Folklore and Ethnography. The Roger D. Abrahams Collection consists of three linear feet of textual records related to his research in the Caribbean Islands and publications from throughout his career. Reel-to-reel tape recordings of songs, stories, and poems from the Caribbean, as well as photographic slides and negatives are also included in the collection.
