Abstract:
Helen Octavia Dickens was the first female African American board-certified OB/GYN in Philadelphia a member faculty in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. The Helen O. Dickens Papers document the latter half of Dickens' career in the field of medicine, medical education and public health. The collection contains correspondence, articles, reprints, grant proposals and some notes regarding Dickens' work in teenage pregnancy during the 1960s and 1970s which can be found in the Medical and Correspondence series.

Abstract:
As a teacher, scholar, lawyer, and consultant, Lawrence P. King (1929-2001) played an important role in the reform of bankruptcy law from the 1960s to his death in 2001. King taught commercial and bankruptcy law at New York University Law School. He served on a number of congressional commissions formed to analyze and reform bankruptcy law, including the Advisory Committee on Bankruptcy Rules of the Judicial Conference of the United States. He gave speeches and participated in panels regarding bankruptcy legislation for a number of seminars and educational programs. He was an active member of the National Bankruptcy Conference, an organization of lawyers, judges, and professors dedicated to bankruptcy reform. He had leadership roles in National Bankruptcy Conference committees, including the Committee on Legislation, where he was Chairman. Nancy Dreher was a member of the American College of Bankruptcy, Fellow of the American Bar Association, and member of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges (NCBJ), where she served as Editor-in-Chief of the American Bankruptcy Law Journal from 1994 to 1998. Dreher also edited the NCBJ publication Conference News from 1999 to 2000, a period during which the newsletter underwent a thorough restructuring. The Nancy C. Dreher collection includes selected issues of the American Bankruptcy Law Journal, which Dreher edited from 1994 to 1998, and "Conference News," the official NCBJ newsletter that was edited by Dreher from 1999 to 2000. Abstract:
Philip Rieff (1922-2006) was an American sociologist, cultural critic and professor at the University of Pennsylvania from 1961 to 1992. He is best known for his critiques of Freud and Freud's influence on society and morality in Western cultures. The collection is almost entirely composed of letters and postcards written to Rieff alongside a small number he authored himself. The subjects of the correspondences are largely personal, ranging from social letters with friends to thank-you letters from prior students. There is a large body of correspondence from Evelyn Joll (1925-2001), an art dealer and scholar who specialized in the work of the British painter J. M. W. Turner. There are also a small number of documents from academic and professional bodies, such as the letter awarding Rieff a Guggenheim fellowship in 1970.

Robert D. Martin (1944-) was appointed Chief United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Western District of Wisconsin in 1978. Martin was a charter fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy and a conferee of the National Bankruptcy Conference. He was a member of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges (NCBJ), an organization devoted to providing to providing education and advice relating to bankruptcy legislation. The University of Pennsylvania Women's Club originated in 1906 when Mary Spring Gardiner Frazier, wife of the Dean of the Medical School, Charles Harrison Frazier, organized an informal gathering for several faculty wives to meet every two weeks for tea. It was officially founded, however, in 1910 under the name of the Faculty Tea Club of the University of Pennsylvania. The University of Pennsylvania Women's Club Records contains material of its activities and official business. The bulk of the collection contains financial records and a chronological file.

Founded in 1907, the Charlotte Cushman Club was originally intended to provide respectable lodgings for actresses appearing in Philadelphia theaters. In the years of World War II the Club ceased to provide residential services, becoming a favorite gathering place of theater lovers as well as of the many actresses and actors visiting the city with their touring companies. The Charlotte Cushman Club Records offer insight into the activities, the administration, and the membership of the Club during the whole life of the organization, until its closure in 1998. The collection also includes part of the holdings of the former Club's museum and library.

Most expositions recognized by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) are represented, as well as many that are not officially recognized by the BIE. The Ira Ellman Family Dissolution Papers house the correspondence and printed material of the Chief Reporter of the American Law Institute on the ten year study of the Principles of the Law of Family Dissolution. The collection chronicles Ellman's term as Chief Reporter on the Project starting in 1991 and ranging until the study's completion in 2001. A majority of the collection is composed of printed material of various sources and Principle drafts, as well as some correspondence between Ellman and a variety of law professors concerning the process of creating tentative drafts on the issue of family dissolution. The subject of all of these documents dealt with sub-topics of family dissolution. A large number of drafts of the Principles of Family Dissolution compose the collection. The collection looks at the treatment of partners, division of property, private agreements and formal contracts, child support and custodial responsibility.

The American Law Institute (ALI) was founded in 1923 in response to a perceived uncertainty and complexity in American law. An association of practitioners and scholars known as the "Committee on the Establishment of a Permanent Organization for Improvement of Law" published a study that recommended a lawyers' organization be formed to improve the law and its administration. The committee was chaired by Elihu Root and counted Learned Hand, Benjamin Cardozo, and Samuel Williston among its members. This photograph collection is comprised of portraits of ALI directors, presidents, members, and staff. Also included are photographs from the Annual Meeting, including the 1st Annual Meeting in 1923.

Kenneth N. Klee spent his career analyzing bankruptcy law and advocating for pro-debtor reforms to the Bankruptcy Code. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1974 and joined to the California bar in 1975. He began his career as Associate Counsel for the Subcommittee on Civil and Constitutional Rights, a subunit of the House of Representatives' Committee on the Judiciary, where he advised Congress and helped draft legislation related to bankruptcy reform in the 1970s. He was also a consultant to the House Judiciary Committee from 1977 to 1982 and the Department of Justice from 1983 to 1985. Klee was a member of the National Bankruptcy Conference, an association of scholars and practitioners committed to the study of bankruptcy legislation and reform, where he was chair of the Committee on Legislation from 1992 to 1999. Murray Drabkin (1928-) was a commercial bankruptcy lawyer at Hopkins and Sutter in Washington, D.C. until 2001. He was a member of the National Bankruptcy Conference and co-authored the "Judges' bill," which, together with the "Commission bill," drafted by a federal commission to study bankruptcy laws, was the basis for the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 1978. Merrill R. Francis (born 1932) joined the firm of Sheppard, Mullin, Richter, and Hampton in 1959. He specialized in commercial law, bankruptcy, and secured and unsecured creditor representation. Francis was a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, a fellow of the American Bar Foundation, and a member of the American Bar Association, where he chaired a number of groups and committees. He has served on the Board of Directors of the American College of Bankruptcy since 1995. Mark B. McFeeley has well over thirty-five years of experience practicing law in America, of which twenty-eight years (1981-2009) was dedicated to serving as a bankruptcy judge for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Mexico. Judge McFeeley was instrumental in forming the Bankruptcy Appellate Panel for the Tenth Circuit. As a bankruptcy judge, McFeeley was intimately involved with the Bankruptcy Crisis of the 1980s that called into question the constitutionality of the bankruptcy system and the appointment of bankruptcy judges after the Marathon Pipeline decision in June of 1982. In 1984, Judge McFeeley was one of four bankruptcy judges who filed suit against the Administrative Office of the United States Courts. The North American Free Trade Agreement has stimulated a large increase in economic activity that crosses the Canadian, Mexican, and United States borders. Inevitably, this has resulted in an increase in the number of bankruptcies in which creditors and assets are located in more than one of the NAFTA countries. The American Law Institute's (ALI's) Transnational Insolvency: Cooperation Among the NAFTA Countries arose in response to this increasing number of bankruptcies of multinational economic enterprises. The Project's eventual goal was to develop principles and procedures for managing the general default of an economic enterprise having its center of interest in a NAFTA country and having assets, creditors, and operations in more than one NAFTA country. Bernard G. Segal graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School (now known as the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School) in 1931. Segal became the youngest Deputy Attorney General in Pennsylvania's history in 1932, the first Jewish lawyer elected Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association in 1952, and the first Jewish president of the American Bar Association in 1969. Segal also co-chaired the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and headed the Office of Economic Opportunity's Advisory Committee on Legal Services to the Poor. The Bernard G. Segal papers document all of Segal's activities outside of his work as a lawyer at Schnader, Harrison, Segal, and Lewis. Martha Millet (1918-2004) was a poet and literary critic active in the Communist Party USA. This collection includes 9 boxes of material related to her poetic and political writings. It contains most of her poetic and critical work in manuscript form; copies of journals and anthologies to which she contributed; scrapbooks assembled by Millet to commemorate her publications; documents from the Helsinki Peace Conference of 1955 which Millet attended; work by her husband, Sender Garlin, as well as a transcript of his FBI file; and works by others, including the transcripts of Ezra Pounds WWII era radio broadcasts, which Millet used to write a book attacking Pound's political thought.

Louis Barkhouse Flexner was a Professor of Anatomy and Chair of the Anatomy Department at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine from 1951 to 1967, a founder of the University of Pennsylvania's Institute of Neurological Sciences (now called the Mahoney Institute for Neurosciences), and medical researcher noted for his work pertaining to the biochemistry of memory.The Louis Barkhouse Flexner papers mostly consist of offprints from scholarly journals of articles Flexner authored or co-authored, handwritten drafts of talks Flexner gave, a small collection of photographs, offprints inscribed by his uncles, Abraham and Simon Flexner, and correspondence that is of a mixed professional and personal nature.

Abstract:
The National Bankruptcy Conference is a voluntary, non-profit, self-supporting organization of lawyers, law teachers, and bankruptcy judges who have achieved scholarly distinction in the field of bankruptcy law. Its purpose is to study the operation of bankruptcy and related laws and proposals for their reform. The Conference participated as a consultant to Congress in every substantial amendment of the Bankruptcy Act up to the 1970s. The collection includes minutes summaries of proceedings of National Bankruptcy Conference meetings from 1948 to 1996 and reports submitted by the Committee on Coordination of Uniform Commercial Code and Bankruptcy Act.

A. Mitchell Palmer was a Democratic politician from Pennsylvania who served as Congressman, Alien Property Custodian and Attorney General between 1908 and 1921. This collection consists of material largely relating to Palmer's political career, from 1912 until his retirement in 1921. Researchers will find material created during Palmer's life time as well as material collected, after his death, by family, including photographs, political cartoons, material relating to his unsuccessful 1920 run for president, and an address given by Palmer at Swarthmore College.
