The Office of Vice Provost for University Life was created in 1979 to oversee a number of student-oriented departments and services at the University of Pennsylvania. This includes admissions, financial aid, student residence and student life, recreational and intercollegiate athletics, and fraternity and sorority affairs. In addition the academic and administrative services which report to the vice provost include the registrar, counseling, career advising and placement. It is responsible for both undergraduate and graduate students. The office was preceded by the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies and University Life. Jannis Sommerville was appointed the first Vice Provost for University Life. She was followed by James J. Bishop and Kim M. Morrison.
The Vice Provost for University Life Records document the activities of the office and its varying responsibilities on the University of Pennsylvania campus. Records include correspondence, reports, drafts, meeting records, and planning documents. In addition, records for the Lindback Teaching Award are included.
The collection's arrangement is based on the filing system that originated in the Vice Provost for University Life's office. As such, the original order of the collection has been maintained. Series include: Division Departments; Vice Provost's Office; University Administrative Offices; Student Life Related Programs; Miscellaneous Administrative Tasks, Issues, Policy Information; Committees, Councils, Task Forces; Phi Beta Kappa; Lindback Teaching Awards; Truman Scholarship Competition; Academic Issues and Support Programs; Academic Schools, Departments and Programs; Outside Organizations and Support Programs; Nassau Fund Research Scholarship; Chronological File; and Miscellaneous.
The Records of the Vice Provost for University Life were transferred to the University Archives from the Vice Provost's office in various increments.
