Abstract:
Wilmer Atkinson (1840-1920) of Philadelphia, Pa., was a Quaker journalist and editor and publisher of the Farm Journal. He was active in social concerns, especially suffrage for women. The scrapbooks in this collection were compiled by his daughter, Gertrude Atkinson (1874-1948). The collection includes scrapbooks containing clippings and memorabilia concerning the Atkinson, Allen, and related families, and a typed copy of a journal which Wilmer Atkinson kept in 1917 concerning the War.

Abstract:
This collection includes letters and printed materials relating to Rufus Jones. Included are photocopies of letters commenting on or criticizing The American Friend of which Rufus Jones was editor. Among these are a letter from Henry Stanley Neuman, editor of The Friend, regarding the state of the Society in England, and a letter from Walter Malone relating events at Ohio Yearly Meeting in 1894. Letters from R.L. Kelly, Joseph Moore, David Hadley, and Thomas Newlin discuss The American Friend, Friends University in Wichita, Kansas, and Quaker doctrine. A letter from J. Rendel Harris presents an issue of Biblical translation. Also included are drafts of Jones' article, Are We Ready, letters concerning its release, and Richmond P. Miller's introduction to the publication, On Your Marks! Get Set! Various personal letters to Rufus Jones and a transcript copy of his remarks at Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, entitled We Must Help Answer Our Prayers, are also included.

Abstract:
The Benezet House Association, Philadelphia, Pa., was formed in 1917 to assist and educate the City's poor African American and immigrant residents. It was created by the merger of the Joseph Sturge Mission School, a First Day school for African Americans founded in 1865; Anthony Benezet School, founded in 1795 as the School for Black People and their Descendants (also known as the Raspberry Street School); and Western District Colored School, founded 1848 under the care of Twelfth Street Meeting as a graded primary school. This collection also contains records of the Locust Street Mission Association, the Joseph Sturge Mission School, and the Beehive School for Colored Children.

Charles Palmer (1863-1966) was a Quaker teacher, lawyer, and real estate broker from Chester, Pennsylvania. Abstract:
Contains the collected correspondence of the Bringhurst family, largely compiled by C. Marshall Taylor. It includes correspondence, 1780-1806, of Philadelphia Quaker businessman James Bringhurst and his letters received from John Murray of New York City. Bringhurst corresponded with family and prominent friends including John Dickinson, Job Scott, Nathan Hunt, James Pemberton, Jesse Kersey, Lindley Murray and Moses Brown. Of particular interest are descriptions of life in Philadelphia and the conditions of free blacks, as well as Quaker religious and social concerns and visits from traveling ministers. A second group of letters contains primarily letters from Joseph Bringhurst, the brother of James, to his niece, Elizabeth Foulke while she was traveling in the ministry.

Abstract:
Morgan Bunting (1863-1929) was a member of the Society of Friends in Darby, Pa., and a descendant of Samuel Bunting (1692-1759) who emigrated from England in the early eighteenth century. An architect by occupation, Bunting had an avid interest in Darby history and genealogy. The collection includes correspondence and genealogical papers concerning the Sellers, Cadwallader, Bartram, and Coleman families. There are also some original documents concerning the Bunting family, including deeds, wills, and an acknowledgment of Samuel Bunting to the Darby Monthly Meeting (1755), as well as a letter from William Poole to Edward Garrigues, 1825.

Abstract:
This collection contains papers, in part typed transcriptions, concerning the Brantingham and Stratton families, Quaker families of England and Ohio. Includes correspondence and a transcript of sea journal (1798-1799) of George Brantingham (1770-1845), an English Quaker who emigrated to Philadelphia and by 1821 had settled in Salem, Ohio. Most of the correspondence is directed to George Brantingham or his daughter Hannah from members of Brantingham's family in England, including brothers, John Brantingham (1768-1823), Joseph Brantingham (1754-1832), and William Brantingham (1756-1840). Also included is a typed transcript of an autobiography of Daniel Stratton (1737-1872) of Ohio. The papers, including correspondence, biographies, and genealogical data, were compiled by Edith Stratton Platt, a descendant.

Hadassah M.L. Holcombe (1891-1978) was a Quaker educator who was a co-founder of the Friends Council of Education and served as Secretary of the Friends General Conference and Chairman of the Committee on Education of the Friends World Conference. Hadassah Holcombe taught mathematics at the Germantown Friends School for ten years, and, in addition to her other activities, served on the Boards of Swarthmore College, Antioch, George School, Sidwell Friends, and Haverford College. The collection contains her diaries from 1904-1937.

David Hutchinson Scull (1914-1983) was a Quaker businessman and civil rights activist in Virginia. He graduated from Swarthmore College in 1936, joined the Society of Friends while a student, and served on the Swarthmore College Board of Managers from 1974-1977. He was president of Turnpike Press, a family publishing company, and an insurance executive. He also was clerk of Baltimore Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends and a founder of Partnership for Productivity, a Quaker sponsored project to promote peace through worldwide economic development. This collection contains correspondence and related materials from his student days at Swarthmore College, 1931-1934.

Alice Hall Paxson Papers on Scattered Seeds, 1930-1936 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Alice Hall Paxson (1868-1955) was a Quaker author and editor, of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Thomas Heston and Lydia H. (Cox) Hall of Chester County. The family moved to Swarthmore, Pa., about 1889, and Alice graduated from Swarthmore College in 1888. In 1897, she married Charles Paxson. The family had close ties to Swarthmore College, including many graduates. Lydia (Cox) Hall was founding editor and editor for forty years of the periodical Scattered Seeds, a position in which her daughters, Abby Hall Paxson and Abby Hall Roberts, succeeded her. About 1928, Alice Hall Paxson became sole editor. The collection contains chiefly editorial correspondence and other papers relating to Scattered Seeds, a magazine for Quaker children, from 1930-1936 when it was edited by Paxson. The collection also includes correspondence with American Unitarian Association, publishers of a similar periodical, The Beacon.

The manuscript of Rufus M. Jones, entitled "The Trail of Life in the Middle Years," is the third volume in an autobiographical series, of which the two preceding volumes are: "Finding the Trail of Life" and "The Trail of Life in College." The narrative begins in the year 1893, when Jones became the editor of "The Friends Review" and began teaching philosophy at Haverford College. In it, he discusses the state of the Society of Friends at the time, and discusses his personal reconciliation of past Quaker separations, particularly during his time as the editor of "The Friends Review."

Wilbur K. Thomas (1882-1953), a Quaker born in Indiana, was executive secretary of the American Friends Service Committee from 1918 to 1929. He graduated from Friends University in 1904, served as pastor of various Quaker churches, graduated from Yale Divinity School in 1907, earned a Ph.D. from Boston University in 1914, and was a member of Boston Friends Meeting after 1909. He was director of the Carl Schurz Memorial Foundation in Philadelphia from 1930 to 1946. The collection contains biographical material, correspondence (1918-1933), speeches and writings relating to his work with the AFSC and as a pastor in Quaker communities. Topics covered include peace, civil liberties, social service, prisons, and relief activities in Russia in 1922, as well as his Ph.D. dissertation, "the Social Service of Quakerism."

Abstract:
Samuel Shinn Ash and his wife, Sarah Jane Schofield Ash, were prominent Quakers, active in a variety of philanthropic activities, including anti-slavery, peace, temperance, women's rights, and education. Samuel Shinn Ash was apprenticed as an engineer and machinist and worked in manufacturing. This collection consists of family papers, manuscript letters and memorabilia, largely of a domestic nature. Includes some descriptions of Meetings and religious journeys, of the early struggles of Samuel S. Ash in engineering and business, and references to the Schofield Normal and Industrial School in Aiken, S.C. of which Martha Schofield, one of the correspondents, was Manager. The exchange of letters between Mary S. Ash and her mother, Sarah Ash, describes student life at Swarthmore College in the 1890's.

This small collection includes George D. Cock's journal in two bound volumes of his trip in 1843 from his home in Brownsville, Pennsylvania, through Quaker communities in the East, including Philadelphia and Baltimore. The journal includes comments on his courtship of Susan W. Smith, who he married in 1845. The collection also includes a balance sheet from 1843 on freight carried, his marriage certificate, and a letter from his daughter, Marion Cock, which includes family information.

The collection contains family correspondence (4 ALsS), genealogical notes, and bible records. It includes family correspondence received by Rebecca Clark, 1804-1806, before her marriage to John Humphrey. One letter is from her sister Elizabeth and the other letters were written by her mother Bathsheba Clark. Bathsheba mentions caring for a grandchild with smallpox and various needlework projects. The genealogical information includes pages from a family bible, research on the Allen, Clark, and Elten families, much of which is consolidated into a family tree by Richard J. Allen, Jr. (1860-1935), an older brother of William C. Allen.

Kite-Bassett Family Papers, 1837-1930 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Kite and Bassett families were Orthodox Quakers from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Lynn, Massachusetts, respectively. James Kite was born in 1808, the son of Benjamin and Rebecca Kite of Philadelphia. In 1837 he was granted a certificate to Salem Monthly Meeting in Massachusetts to marry Lydia B. Rodman, widow of Caleb Rodman and daughter of Isaac and Ruth Bassett of Lynn. James and Lydia had eight children, viz. Ruth, James Rodman, Eliza B., Rebecca, Isaac C. Bassett, Hannah B., Lydia and Abby; Eliza and Isaac died young. James died in 1856 at the age of 48. Lydia B., a minister in Philadelphia Monthly Meeting for the Northern District, died in 1872 at the age of 60 years. Ruth Kite married Jacob Smedley Jr. in 1865. The Truman and Underhill families were prominent Philadelphia-area Quaker families with close ties to Swarthmore College and active in social concerns. Best known is George Truman (1798-1877), Quaker merchant and doctor and a recognized minister who visited Indians in the American West and former Quaker settlements in the West Indies. He was one of the founders of Swarthmore College. This collection contains chiefly the papers of Benjamin Mott Underhill (1863-1930), with some Truman-Underhill family material including genealogical and family documents, one folder of correspondence, and a picture collection which includes family albums, cased photographs, and silhouettes of the Truman and Underhill families.

Abstract:
The Chautauqua movement grew out of the American Lyceum and had its beginnings in 1874 at Chautauqua Lake, New York. In the late 1800s, this movement to provide entertainment and education to the American public was extended by circuit Chautauquas. The Swarthmore Chautauqua was the youngest of the circuits and was founded in 1912 by Paul M. Pearson of Swarthmore College. This small collection of Chautauqua memorabilia contains programs, travel details, a letter describing travel and take-down process in 1920, and snaphots taken during the 1920-1921 tour.

The collection is composed of two family scrapbooks and acid-free copies. In 1894-1895, James M. Price researched information and correspondence concerning the time his aunt and uncle, Philip and Matilda Price, spent in the utopian community of New Harmony, Indiana, 1825-1826. Copies and some of his original correspondence were mounted into an old account book. In 1929, Susanna M. Price, his daughter, compiled a scrapbook containing family history, reminiscences, and photographs.

Abstract:
Joseph Fell (1804-1887), the son of Dr. David and Phebe Schofield Fell, was a Pennsylvania Quaker teacher and farmer. In 1835 he married Harriet Williams, the daughter of Samuel and Sarah Watson Williams of Buckingham, Pa. Joseph and Harriet Fell had five children: William W. (1836-1874), Emily Catherine who married William Seal in 1863; David Newlin (1840-1919) who married Martha Trego; Edward Watson (1843-1901) who married Elizabeth Matlack Kenderdine in 1867; and Lucy W. Fell, born 1847. Edward Watson and Elizabeth Kenderdine Fell had four children. The eldest was Edward Lawrence Fell (1867-1943) who married Esther May Willets. Both were Swarthmore College graduates, Class of 1888, and members of Green Street Monthly Meeting. This collection contains papers of the Williams and Fell family members, Pennsylvania Hicksite Quakers. These papers include student papers of E. Lawrence Fell, family correspondence (1819-1885), pictures, and miscellaneous deeds and memorabilia.

Zebedee Haines (1843-1923) was a Quaker who was active in the work of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of Friends and of its Indian Committee in the late 19th century. Zebedee was also a student, teacher, administrator, and school committee member at Westtown School. The Haines family ran a dairy farm in West Grove, Pennsylvania. The collection contains family correspondence and diaries. Also includes letters of Zebedee Haines to his wife, describing his visits to Tunesassa and to native American groups in Nova Scotia with Joseph S. Elkinton in 1903, and of his daughter, Mary Elizabeth Haines, who taught at Tunesassa from 1908-09.

Abstract:
This collection consists of unpublished books and papers compiled by Charles and Lucy Roberts on the descendants of Robert Cadwalader of Wales and his children who came to America, settled in Gwynedd Township, and took the surname Roberts. After the death of Charles Roberts in 1902, his widow, Lucy Roberts, hired Gilbert Cope to continue the compilation and put it in useful order with the intention of publication. Cope had family group sheets bound into two large volumes, which he called "Book A" and "Book B", and these form the bulk of this collection. The remainder of the collection consists of related books, notes, papers, and correspondence.

Abstract:
Benjamin Sharp (1858-1915), a zoologist who was primarily affiliated with the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, attended Swarthmore College (1876) and earned a M.D. and Ph. D. from the University of Pennsylvania. A birthright member of the Society of Friends (Quakers), Dr. Sharp was the son of Benjamin and Hannah B. (Leedom) Sharp of the Germantown section of Philadelphia, Pa. He was married to Virginia May of Ridley, Mass. The family moved to Massachusetts in the early 20th century, and Dr. Sharp served as Representative for Nantucket to the Massachusetts Legislature. The collection consists primarily of correspondence from friends and colleagues, memorabilia from Swarthmore College, and family materials, including the diary of Rebecca Sharp.

Abstract:
The collection contains papers concerning the Eyre family, Pennsylvania Quakers. descendents of Isaac and Eleanor (Cooper) Eyre, of Philadelphia and Bucks County. Isaac Eyre (1778-1843) was a prominent Philadelphia shipbuilder. In 1828, he removed to a farm in Bucks County, Pa. William Eyre (1804-1885) was their oldest son, a Philadelphia master builder. His brother, Isaac (1819-1904) was a farmer and promoter of the railroad from Bucks County, Pa. He was also one of the founders of the George School, Newtown, Pa., and active in Quaker concerns. The collection contains correspondence of Isaac Eyre largely to Isaac Hicks (1815-1900) Quaker interests, prominent Friends, farming, and railroad projects; also eighteen diaries of William Eyre (1840-1880, gaps 1841-1849 and 1855-1857, microfilmed), and some miscellaneous family material.
