Overview and metadata sections
Ruth Allen Bell (1917-2004) was the descendant of Quakers who settled in America in the 18th century. Her grandparents, Elizabeth Clark Bromley Allen and William C. Allen, were active Philadelphia Friends who traveled widely in their ministry. Ruth's mother, Grace Bromley Allen, a member of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting, Western District, married Samuel Bell of Waterford, Ireland, in 1913, and they removed to the United Kingdom. Grace was descended from Benjamin and Bathsheba (Elten) Clark, members of Burlington Monthly Meeting. Bathsheba (1733-1817) and her youngest child, Rebecca, moved to Philadelphia in 1827. Rebecca Clark (1791-1836) married John Humphreys in 1827, and their daughter Elizabeth married James Bromley in 1862. William C. Allen also was a descendant of the Elten family as well as the Ridgways of New Jersey.
