Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Annual Sessions, 1662-2022 (inclusive)

Abstract:
A general meeting for Friends in the Delaware Valley area was first convened at Burlington in 1681. The first general meeting held in Philadelphia was in 1683, and in 1685, it was agreed that the meetings in New Jersey and Pennsylvania should be combined into one yearly meeting with alternate sessions at Philadelphia and at Burlington. The great Separation among Philadelphia Friends into Orthodox and Hicksite branches occurred at the Yearly Meeting of 1827. Through the course of the early 20th century, the PYMs began to draw back together until 1955 when organic union was formally approved, and a reunited PYM, the present organization, was created. Records of the annual sessions of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting include minutes and other records such as epistles sent and recieved which pertain to those annual sessions. Also included are the records of those committees charged with the preparations for the annual sessions.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Education Committees (1833-1974), 1833-1976 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Committee on Education of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends acts primarily as an advisory and consultative body. It has various funds at its disposal for use in assisting Friends schools and individual Quakers in the Yearly Meeting. An Education Committee was first appointed by Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Hicksite) in 1833 to survey the state of education within its limits. Hicksites and Orthodox Friends subsequently named a sucession of subroups on education and libraries until the 1870's when both branches formed more permanent committees. In 1950, the Hicksites joined with the Orthodox to merge their respective groups into a Joint Committee on Education, before the actual reunification of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in 1955. The records of the committees include minutes, Executive Committee minutes, and Extension Committee minutes. Also includes records of the Mary Jeanes Loan Committee and the Anne P. Townsend Fund.

Abstract:
The administrative structure of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting has been re-worked a number of times. This finding aid describes administrative records and office files, primarily from the early 20th century to the present -- from the time when the Hicksite and Orthodox Yearly Meetings first began to employ paid staff to handle administrative matters. Today these functions are grouped under the auspices of General Services. This finding aid also describes the records of the General Secretaries of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting from 1967 to 1996.

Abstract:
The Church Unity Committee was composed of a small group of members-at-large appointed by the Yearly Meeting and those Friends who served "in any official capacity as representatives of this Yearly Meeting on State, National, or World Councils of Churches." It had originally been appointed by the Orthodox branch to coordinate ecumenical contacts. The Committee was laid down by Representative Meeting in 1973.

The Weekend Workcamps Program originated on the eve of World War II. It provides volunteers and opportunity to work in an inner city community, interact with neighbors, and dialog on peace and justice issues. Today the Friends' Workcamp Program operates under the auspices of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting's Standing Committee on Peace and Concerns. Records include minutes, reports, project files, correspondence, and other records from 1942 to the present.

Pennsylvania Yearly Meeting of Progressive Friends records, 1851-1941 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection includes the minutes of the Longwood Yearly Meeting of Progressive Friends, as well as records of its Financial Association and its Representative Committee. Also included are some minutes of Kennett Monthly Meeting, from which the Longwood meeting split off beginning in the 1840s. There are detailed records of this split, including lists of the members who were disowned from Kennett Monthly Meeting for associating under the name "Progressive Friends." Minutes and letters written during this period, as well as later narrative accounts written by members, provide futher information about this split. The collection also includes many histories of the meeting, written and presented by members on the occasion of the final Yearly Meeting, which was held in 1940. A range of miscellaneous records, such as the Bible and hymnals used by the Yearly Meeting, are also included in the collection.

Abstract:
In 5mo 1930, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Hicksite) appointed a committee "for the development of closer cooperation between Arch Street and Race Street Yearly Meetings, and to consider also whether the time of our Yearly Meeting might be changes so that the sessions of the two Meetings would at least in part overlap." Includes records of this Committee, 1930-1935. Of particular interest are surveys of cooperation between the two Philadelphia Quaker bodies to that point, as well as histories of these early orgainzations, including Woolman School, the predecessor to Pendle Hill.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Mississippi Project (1964-1966), 1949-1967 (inclusive)

Abstract:
In response to the 1964 bombing of 44 black churches in Mississippi, Philadelphia and New York Yearly Meetings coordinated a joint effort to rebuild the destroyed churches and to attempt to foster racial reconciliation in the area. The project sent Lawrence and Viola Scott to Jackson, Mississippi as Quaker representatives. By 1966, the group had rebuilt 33 of the 44 churches, and built a community center in rural Canton, Mississippi. This collection is primarily composed of financial records, including accounts, invoices, receipts, bank statements, and invoices. It also includes correspondence for the Education Committee of PYM regarding publications, supplies, and pamphlets.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Friends Peace Committee and its predecessors (1891-2015), 1891-2007 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Friends Peace Committee (FPC) of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting was formed in 1933 by the merger of similar committees that had been established in 1892 by the Race Street Yearly Meeting (Hicksite) and in 1916 by the Arch Street Yearly Meeting (Orthodox) in Philadelphia. Since 1933, the committee has undergone a series of structural changes, perhaps most strikingly under the direction of Executive Secretary George Hardin from 1949-1973. There are a number of different subcommittees under the Friends Peace Committee that work on different facets of peacekeeping, including international issues, the role of the military in schools and society, and effecting legislative change.

Records include minutes, correspondence, and publications.
