Abstract:

Founded in the interest of providing opportunities for "greater fellowship, to encourage the development of deeper spiritual experience, and to facilitate service projects for young Quakers" between the ages of 15 and 35 years, PYM's Young Friends Movement actually began as two groups, Hicksite and Orthodox (called the Young Friends Movement and the Young Friends Committee, respectively).

The Young Friends Movement of PYM (Hicksite) was officially organized in 1916 and recognized by the Yearly Meeting two years later. The Young Friends Committee (Orthodox), having met informally since 1912, was recognized by the Yearly meeting in 1925. In 1930 (25 years before the reunification of the two Philadelphia Yearly Meetings), these groups merged officially to form the Young Friends Movement (Joint).

In May, 1975, after a long period of evaluation, Young Friends Movement merged with the Religious Education Committee.

Records of the Joint Young Friends Movement at Haverford include the organization's General and Annual Meeting Minutes (1929-1933), Annual Reports (1931-1947), Conference and Seminar Papers (1931-1971), Correspondence (1933-1971), Financial Records (1931-1960) Photographs (1919-1925), records of its Advisory Committee (1963-1966), its Business Committee (1931-1961), its Executive Committee (1921-1964), its Committee on Young Friends (1931-1951) and other miscellaneous committee or general records.

Young Friends Movement records after 1975 at Haverford can be found with the records of the Religious Education Committee of PYM.
