Association for the Care of Colored Orphans Records, 1822-1979 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Association for the Care of Colored Orphans, also known as "The Shelter," was founded in Philadelphia by Quaker women in 1822 to care for black orphans, both boys and girls, within a nurturing, home-like environment. In 1915, it relocated to Cheyney, Pa, and became a home for girls. In 1965, its name was changed to "Friends Shelter for Girls," and its mission evolved to serve as a home for teenaged girls. In 1981 it ceased to function as a group home and was succeeded by Friends Association for the Care and Protection of Children which functioned as an emergency shelter.

Abstract:
The primary activity of the Friends' Publishing Corporation is Friends Journal, a Quaker periodical. The latter was the successor to The Friend, the serial published by the Orthodox Quakers (1827-1955) and Friends Intelligencer, published by the Hicksite Quakers (1844-1955). It was established as a result of the merger of the two Philadelphia Yearly Meetings, and the first consolidated issue was dated July 2, 1955. Originally published weekly and then bi-weekly, it became a monthly periodical in 1988.

Pendle Hill (School : Wallingford, Pa.) Records, 1915-2011 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Pendle Hill is a Quaker study center located in Wallingford, Pennsylvania. It was established in 1930 out of an earlier Quaker school and study center, the Woolman School. The Woolman School was established in 1915 under the care of the General Conference Committee of the Seven Yearly Meetings (Hicksite). In 1917, it was reorganized as a joint enterprise of Hicksite and Orthodox Friends, governed by a Board of Managers. The Woolman School was incorporated in 1918. In 1928, it was reorganized as a non-degree granting graduate level study center and retreat. In 1930, the name was changed to Pendle Hill, and it moved to its present location. In addition to offering classes and lectures, Pendle Hill publishes pamphlets and other writings on religious and social concerns.

Ladies Benevolent Association of New Brighton (Pa.), 1846-1977 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Ladies Benevolent Association of New Brighton was a largely Quaker women's society, founded in 1846 in New Brighton, Pennsylvania, to provide clothing and other necessities to destitute poor. In 1907, the Ladies Benevolent Association cooperated with groups to engage a visiting nurse; this organization, known as the District Nurse Association was disbanded five years later. After World War II, the need for sewing declined, and the Ladies Benevolent Association then turned its support to the Beaver Valley General Hospital. The group was dissolved in 1977. Contains the records of the Ladies Benevolent Association of New Brighton, including minutes, financial records, correspondence, and other related papers, including minutes of the District Nurse Association of New Brighton, Pa., 1907-1912.

Abstract:
The Ozone Club was a golf association for Quaker men in the Philadelphia area. It was established in 1901 and included in its membership the presidents of Swarthmore College and prominent Quakers. The Niblick Club which was set-off from the Ozone Club in the 1920s, also was a men's golf association with Quaker membership. The Ozone Club records include minute books, correspondence and miscellaneous papers. A small amount of records from the Niblick Club is also included with the collection, including annual meeting programs and photos.

Friends' Boarding Home of the Concord Quarterly Meeting, 1890-1991 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Friends' Boarding Home of Concord Quarterly Meeting, a Quaker boarding home for the elderly in West Chester, PA, was established in 1891. It was originally for women only, but by 1894, men were also admitted. In 1936, the Home moved to a new facility which was constructed with funds provided by a bequest from Nathaniel Hickman. After 1976, the Home no longer offered nursing services. The collection contains minutes, reports, admission and financial, and other related papers, some of which are restricted.

The Fair Housing Council of Suburban Philadelphia also began in 1956 as the Southeastern Delaware County Area Committee of Friends Suburban Housing Committee. Abstract:
Contains the records, 1872-1976, of the Trustees for Friends' Meeting House and Lots at Atlantic City, N.J., and the records, 1986-1991, of the committee of the board of managers of Atlantic City Friends School which tried to save the School. Records are lacking between 1976 and 1986. The Trustees for Friends' Meeting House and Lots at Atlantic City was a self-perpetuating and independent board of trustees which held title to the properties in which Atlantic City Friends Meeting and Atlantic City Friends School were held. The School was financially sound until the early 1970s when its fortunes paralleled the decline of Atlantic City. In 1986, the School left Atlantic City for temporary quarters. It was laid down in 1988 due to poor enrollment.

Elizabeth Powell Bond (1841-1926) served for four years as Matron of Swarthmore College and was appointed as its first Dean of Women in 1890. She retired in 1906. 1906. (1860-1926), diaries and journals (1856-1925), business papers, speeches and articles, pictures, and memorabilia. Correspondents include Louisa M. Abstract:
Anna M. Jackson and her daughter, Anna M. (Jackson Branson) Theiss, were Quaker activists in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Anna M. Jackson was very involved in reform activities in New York City. She served as Chairman of the Women's Prison Reform Committee, and was also involved in the Women's Municipal League and the Political Study Club. Her daughter, Anna Morris Jackson ("Pansy"), attended Swarthmore College for two years, and in 1909 earned a B.S. in Education from Columbia University. Anna was involved in Green Street Monthly Meeting, Friends General Conference, and helped to organize the Inter-Racial Committee of Philadelphia. The collection contains correspondence, journals, and memorabilia. It also includes related materials of the Davis, Price, Jackson, and Fox families, as well as some correspondence. Francis R. Bacon (1878-1965), a birthright Quaker, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Architecture in 1913 and was later Dean of Western Reserve University's School of Architecture. He married Edith Melrose Farquhar in 1915, and in the early 1920's they participated in the AFSC child feeding programs in Germany and Russia. This collection primarily includes correspondence, notes, photographs, and other materials related to Francis R. Bacon's research on 17th century Quaker meeting houses. Abstract:
William Hubben (1895-1974) was a prominent Quaker educator, speaker, editor, and author. Born in Germany in 1895, William Hubben joined the small but growing movement of German Quakers in 1923 and participated in a number of international religious and peace conferences. His political involvement with the Social Democratic Party caused his dismissal in 1933 by Hitler's government. He emigrated to the United States with his wife, Maria, and children soon afterward, and went on to be heavily involved with Quakerism there. The collection contains correspondence (1906-1976), manuscript and published writings (1924-70), editorials, reviews, speeches, notes, pictures and memorabilia, and reference materials of William Hubben. Part of the collection is in German.

Anna Bassett Griscom (Elkinton) (1889-1974) was a prominent American Quaker active in the peace movement. She served as Executive Secretary of the Friends General Conference, chairman of a committee to organize the Friends World Conference held at Swarthmore College in 1937, chairman of the Friends Peace Committee of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, and was a founder of the Fellowship of Reconciliation. She married J. Passmore Elkinton in 1931. The collection includes correspondence, speeches and writings, and miscellaneous manuscripts of Anna B. Griscom. Of particular interest is material relating to Woodbrooke, a Quaker study center in England where she worked in 1914, and of the Friends World Conference in 1937.

Eleanor Stabler Clarke (1896-1995), a birthright Quaker, was active in the American Friends Service Committee and other Quaker organizations, and served on the Swarthmore College Board of Managers from 1935-1971. She was the daughter of Charles M. and Ida Palmer Stabler, and in 1918 she married William Anderson Clarke, Sr. Her sister, Cornelia Stabler Gillam (1898-1979) was active in the theater and performed for the U.S.O. in 1945 and 1946. The collection includes a genealogy with stories and photos compiled by Eleanor Stabler Clarke (1896-1995) titled "A Goodly Heritage," and writings by Cornelia Stabler Gillam (1898-1979). Cornelia Gillam's writings include her one-woman dramatic biography "Charlotte Bronte," which she first performed in 1957, and "European and Veterans Hospitals Via USO," given as lectures in 1945 and 1946

Eliza Moore Ambler Foulke (1893-1987) was a prominent member of Gwynedd Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends. A birthright Quaker, she married Thomas Albert Foulke (1893-1962) in 1923. Eliza Foulke was interested in local Quaker and family history, and she was very active in Quaker organizations throughout her long life. This collection contains Eliza Foulke's manuscripts and scrapbooks relating to the history of Gwynedd Monthly Meeting. Of particular interest are a history of the Beaumont property which includes genealogies of the Foulke, Ambler, Jenkins, and Beaumont families, and a history and three scrapbooks concerning Gwynedd Monthly Meeting and Plymouth Monthly Meeting in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

Isaac Hicks (1767-1820) was a New York Quaker merchant. He established a large fleet of international trading vessels and financially helped to support his cousin, Edward Hicks (1780-1849), the Pennsylvania Quaker folk artist. Isaac Hicks traveled extensively with his cousin, Elias Hicks (1748-1830), the New York Quaker minister. The collection contains primarily the correspondence of Isaac Hicks, including letters from Isaac Hicks to his wife describing religious journeys taken with Elias Hicks; some letters concerning the Separation of 1827-28; and business letters. Correspondents include: John Comly (letters about Edward Hicks, the primitive painter), Elias Hicks, John Murray, Jr., Thomas Rotch, William Rotch, Thomas Sturge. The Moore and Tysons were Maryland Quaker families. Robert Rowland Moore (1863-1934) was married in 1886 to Margaret Gittings Tyson (1859-1937). The collection contains secondary and genealogical information, photographs, diaries, and some miscellaneous papers descending in the Moore, Townsend, Ellicott, and Tyson families. It includes writings about Elisha Tyson and the Tyson family, a copybook and other material concerning Joseph Townsend, Mary Ellicott’s diary of a journey to State of Ohio (1819) with secondary material on Ellicott City and the Ellicott family, and Tabitha B. Abstract:
Contains the papers of William Macy and Lois V. Stanton, compiled by Lois V. Stanton. The Stantons were active Quakers, and William Macy Stanton, Jr., was a conscientious objector in WWII. Both Stantons served in the American Friends Service Committee reconstruction efforts in Europe after the war as well as other Quaker activities and organizations. William Stanton worked for Swarthmore College for over twenty-five years, serving as director of physical plant. Of particular interest are the transcribed and annotated correspondence (photocopies) concerning the Stantons' education, alternate service, and relief and reconstruction activities after World War II and especially William Stanton's participation in the University of Minnesota controlled starvation experiment in 1945.

Mariana Wright Chapman was a prominant New York Quaker suffragist. The collection includes correspondence received while she was active in suffrage activities in New York State, 1893-1900, family letters, particularly between Mariana and her husband, Noah, and the correspondence of the Wrights, the Chapmans, and of her son, A.Wright Chapman. The collection also includes Mariana's journals from 1895-1900, that of Caroline Willets, 1842-1846, and as well as suffrage memorabilia, family copybooks and albums, and financial records, including an account book of the Manhasssett Association of Relief, 1861-1871.

Abstract:
The collection contain papers of the Bassett and Little families who resided in Swarthmore, Pa., in the first half of the twentieth century. In the 1980s, May Virginia Bassett Little (1913-1994) created a series of family scrapbooks accompanied by short memoirs and excerpts from her diaries. Her father was a birthright Quaker, and the family had deep roots in Swarthmore College and the Borough of Swarthmore. Her husband, Ralph V. Little, Jr., (1909-2001), also was raised in Swarthmore. Their son, Donald Townsend Little, continued his mother's interest in autobiography and compiling family history.

Kenneth Carroll was a professor of Religious studies at Southern Methodist University in Dallas beginning in 1952. He also spent a sabbatical at Haverford College as the T. Wistar Brown Fellow in 1969 and 1970 and retired to Easton, Maryland, in 1986. Carroll is a recognized authority on the history of the Society of Friends on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia and has written widely on this and other subjects. Collection primarily consists of correspondence related to Carroll's research and publications, but also includes writings and miscellaneous papers.

A member of New York Monthly Meeting, he was interested in family history and compiled the collection which contains farm daybooks of his great grandfather James M. Jackson of Quakertown and the memoirs of his grandfather, William Morris Jackson, Quaker businessman, reformer, and Trustee of Swarthmore College. The collection also contains genealogical information on the Jackson, Bacon, Chapin and Morris families, as well as personal correspondence and other papers.

Abstract:
Although informal vocational lectures were offered on campus as early as 1916, it was not until 1938 that a formalized vocational guidance and job placement program was instituted at Swarthmore College. Initially, support was provided to male students through the Alumni Office and to female students through the Women's Student Government Association. The gender-segregated programs were later consolidated into a single Career Planning and Placement Office, today known as the Office of Career Services. The Swarthmore College Career Services records, 1947-2016, consist mostly of senior surveys and reports arranged chronologically.

Swarthmore College Faculty Committee on the Pre-Medical Program records, 1945-1967 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Swarthmore College has never offered a formal "premed" major for students planning to pursue graduate degrees in medicine, but the college does provide other forms of guidance and support. A Pre-medical Advisory Committee was formed in 1945, replaced in the 1949/1950 school year by the Faculty Committee on the Pre-Medical Program. As of 2015, the Health Sciences Advisory Committee is composed of faculty members, deans, and the Health Sciences Advisor (a staff position in the Health Sciences Office). The Faculty Committee on the Pre-Medical Program records, 1945-1967, includes annual reports and correspondence of the committee, information about medical schools, aggregate data about Swarthmore students pursuing medical careers, and more. Some materials are from the predecessor Pre-medical Advisory Committee (1945-1950). Note that this collection includes some files of individual students' application materials, but access to these files is restricted.
