Overview and metadata sections

Margaret Hope Bacon (1921-2011), born Margaret Hope Borchardt in New York City, earned a bachelor's degree at Antioch College in 1943. Swarthmore College awarded her an honorary doctorate in the 1980s.

She joined the Society of Friends in the 1950s and served as Assistant Director of Information Services for the American Friends Service Committee from 1962 until she retired in 1984. She was also a longtime vice president of the Pennsylvania Abolition Society, was a cofounder of Women's Way, and, with her husband and others, established the Delaware County Fair Housing Council. In 1978, Bacon was honored by the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations. She was a T. Wistar Brown Fellow in Quaker studies at Haverford College and a Friend in Residence at Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre in Birmingham, England. Her interest in Lucretia Mott also led her to involvement with the preservation of Fair Hill, the burial ground in North Philadelphia where many Hicksite Friends are interred.

Margaret Hope Bacon was married to S. Allen Bacon. While raising three children, she wrote freelance articles for national magazines such as Parents and Good Housekeeping, as well as an Evening Bulletin weekly piece titled "Child's Weekend." From 1959 through 2007, Mrs. Bacon published more than a dozen books, including Valiant Friend: The Life of Lucretia Mott1980), I Speak for My Slave Sister: The Life of Abby Kelley Foster (1974), Let This Life Speak: The Legacy of Henry Joel Cadbury (1987), and Abby Hopper Gibbons: Prison Reformer and Social Activist (2000).

Her Research Papers consist primarily of the manuscripts and files that assembled in the process of research.
