Overview and metadata sections

Martha Deed is a retired Quaker psychologist who wrote her 1969 PhD dissertation on patterns of religious commitment among Friends. She is a prolific writer, poet, and photographer whose beliefs inform her life and work. She has also served on numerous advisory committees, particularly as related to domestic violence and mental health, including the Family Violence Intervention Project Advisory Board in Niagara County, New York.

Born in 1941, Martha is the daughter of Robert and Louise Deed of Nyack, New York. She became a member of Twin Cities Monthly Meeting in Minnesota, and transferred to New York Monthly Meeting in 1969. Dr. Deed married James Franklin Niss a year later but moved to upstate New York in 1981 with her daughter, Millie Niss, who died in 2009.

This collection includes Martha Deed's papers and research materials in two areas, her dissertation, Major patterns of religious commitment among members of the Religious Society of Friends, and that related to her edited publication, Fritz Kunkel - The Psychology of the Whole Man. The papers also contain other writings on Quakerism and psychology as well as material related to her service on Quaker committees. It also includes the raw data used in her dissertation.
