Morris-Shinn-Maier collection, 1720-1975 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection spans approximately 200 years, from the late 1700s to the late 1900s, and five generations of the Morris-Shinn-Maier family, which are traced through matrilineal and patrilineal lines. They were prominent Quaker businessmen and lawyers in the Philadelphia area, and a large portion of the collection is dedicated to their legal and business material, as well as a great deal of very detailed financial material. There is also a quantity of personal material, namely diaries and correspondence, and material from philanthropic work done by later generations. Principal individuals include Paul David Irwin Maier, William Morris Maier, Anna Shinn Maier, Levi Morris and Naomi McClenachan Morris. A genealogical chart done by a Haverford student while processing the collection has been printed out and is included in the box 1191 (ovs).

This collection traces several generations of the Quaker Taylor family, but centers on Francis R. Taylor (1884-1947) and George Washington Taylor (1803-1891). The former was an attorney and collector of information about his own and related families, as well as local historical information. The latter, who ran a free produce store in Philadelphia in the period before the American Civil War, was connected through his interests in free labor to many correspondents.

Abstract:
The Vaux family was deeply involved with Quaker and Native American affairs throughout much of the 19th and early 20th centuries. George Vaux, Sr. was involved in Quaker activity through the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and other Quaker meetings throughout the world (including Antigua and London). Both George Vaux, Jr. and Mary Morris Vaux Walcott, his sister, served as commissioners for the U.S. Board of Indian Commissioners. This organization was established by the United States Congress in 1869 to watch over federal policies regarding Native Americans and to make certain that treaty obligations were fulfilled, especially in reference to supply deliveries. George Vaux, III also worked as the treasurer of the Indian Committee of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. Within the collection are letters, reports, photographs, land surveys, and administrative records. Abstract:
The Sarah Cooper Tatum Hilles family papers house the correspondence of a Quaker family who lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Woodbury, New Jersey; Wilmington, Delaware; and other surrounding areas from approximately 1840 to 1882. A majority of the letters were written to or by Sarah Cooper Tatum Hilles; her husband, John Smith Hilles; and other Tatum or Hilles family members. There is a small sampling of assorted family papers, dating from 1825 to 1901. Included, among other items, are school report cards of William Samuel Hilles from Haverford College and an 1834 memoir of Anne Cooper Tatum, Sarah Hilles' mother. In addition, there are deeds to properties owned by the Hilles family in Delaware, New Jersey, Illinois and Pennsylvania from 1791 to 1886.

Cresson was a Quaker minister who was born in Philadelphia and later moved to Haddonfield, New Jersey. The majority of her diary entries detail visits from traveling Quaker ministers, funerals of community members, and descriptions of Quaker meetings, including testimonies given. Many entries are composed solely of prayers to God, or exclamations of Sarah's religious conviction and her devotion to her God and the Quaker faith, while later entries tend to detail more earthly concerns, particularly Sarah's struggles with depression.

Elizabeth was a colonial era Quaker and prolific journal writer. Elizabeth's diaries are composed of her personal reflections of the day-to-day life of a wealthy Quaker woman in colonial Philadelphia. The majority of Elizabeth's entries detail her daily life, including social calls with other Quaker families and individuals, the births, deaths, and marriages within her community, and attendance at, and descriptions of, weekly and monthly Quaker meetings. Elizabeth's description of events during the American Revolutionary War include general military events, as well as personal experiences during the war.

Martha Routh's journal describes her voyage from London to Boston, which she took in 1794. This volume contains the collection of Joseph Scattergood of original and manuscript copies of documents relating to the Free Quakers, bound by his son George Scattergood. The Free Quakers disagreed with the strict disownment policy for members of the Society of Friends who fought in the Revolutionary War. Led by Samuel Wetherhill, this group wanted to practice Quakerism without the strict rules of discipline and disownment. The papers in Scattergood's collection include petitions, published editorials, accounts of prominent members of the Free Quakers and correspondence. This collection contains the correspondence of the Alsop and Brown families, particularly Othniel Alsop, Hannah Brown Alsop, and Othneil's English siblings, Ann and Robert Alsop. The collections contain journals, correspondence, and miscellaneous Quaker papers. A small journal kept by Thomas Carman, 1864 and 1867, describes his travels which included upstate New York, Baltimore, and Richmond (where he attended general Quaker meetings and visited African American services). Also a photocopy of a journal kept by Catharine Williams, describing a trip to Iowa in 1864 where she attended Yearly Meeting. Correspondents include Benjamin Angell, Edward Dorland, George M. Sisson, and Jeremiah Hubbard. Quaker materials include a 1786 manuscript describing a newspaper article on Quakers in France, an 1805 acrostic by William Hawkins devised for Mary Roach who was accompanying a traveling minister, copied poems and essays on religious themes, and a folder of miscellaneous materials which reflect the Carmans' support of organizations such as the Friends Academy at Union Springs, N.Y., a fair held in New York City to raise funds for freedmen, the Home for the Friendless...(see more)

Abstract:
Collection of manuscripts of the Lewis and Pratt families of Delaware County in Pennsylvania. Includes bible pages with births, marriages, and deaths, as well as Quaker documents. Of particular interest is a letter from Thomas H. Speakman to his sister, M.M. Jenkinson on an inheritance which also includes a reference to Rowland Johnson, Lucretia Mott, Clement Biddle, and James Martin at the Cherry Street meeting house.
