John Smith (1722-1771) was born in Burlington, New Jersey, on January 20, 1771, the son of Richard Smith and Abigail Rapier. He married Hannah Logan on October 7, 1748, in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the couple had four children: Sarah Logan Smith (1749), James Smith (1750), Hannah Smith (1753), and John Smith (1761). Smith died on March 26, 1771, in Burlington, New Jersey.
This collection is comprised of two volumes of John Smith's letterbooks. Inluded is both personal and business correspondence. Personal correspondence discusses family news and births, deaths, and marriages within the Quaker community. Business correspondence is largely related to the buying and selling of imported dry goods.
