Samuel Smith Garrigues (1828-1899) was born on September 17, 1828, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Edward Briggs Garrigues and Sarah Gilpin Smith. Garrigues married Adele M. Burr in 1864, and the couple had two children, Edwin Clendenning Garrigues (b. 1865) and Ellen Elizabeth Garrigues (b. 1868). Samuel Garrigues died May 16, 1899, in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
This collection is comprised of the single volume commonplace book of Samuel Garrigues, and includes extracts of minutes by Thomas Brown, Quaker testimonies, memorandum of Thomas Brown's last illness, and an Account of Ann Parrish. The volume also contains copies of letters written by: Samuel Fothergill, Frances Dodshon, Thomas Lloyd, and Samuel Neale.
The Samuel Garrigues commonplace book was donated to Special Collections, Haverford College in 1934 from the estate of Richard S. Deveers.
