Abstract:
Collection of miscellaneous letters, mostly relating to family and affairs of Samuel West, a Quaker merchant of London and Maidenhead, England. Of particular interest is a letter from Henry Tuke concerning proposed admission of a patient to The Retreat, a home for the mentally ill in Leeds.

Samuel West (1750-1827) was a Quaker merchant of London and, subsequently, Maidenhead, England. He and his son, William West, were active in the concerns of the Society of Friends and corresponded with prominent Quakers including John Gurney, Thomas Foster, and Henry Tuke.

Purchased as a collection of Quaker autographs.
