He was president of the Urban League for 26 years; elected in 1917 to Fisk University Board of Trustees; and a member of Haverford College Board of Managers. Correspondents include Jane Addams, Roger N. Baldwin, W. E. B. DuBois, Rufus M. Jones, Thomas Elsa Jones, Oswald Garrison Villard, Booker T. Washington and many others.

Abstract:
James Wood (1839-1925) was "interested in education, philanthropy, in the various branches of agriculture, in archaeology, history, Indian lore, anthropology, science, in prison reform and above all, in the Bible and religion," (ABS, 2). He was also a business man, serving as President of the Genesee Salt Company in Piffard, New York. The James Wood papers are divided into twelve series: "Biographical Material:" "Agriculture;" Business and Financial Material;" "Collected Quaker Material;" "Correspondence;" "Hugh Barbour Writings and Talks regarding James Wood;" "Journals;" "Organizations;" "Photographs and Albums;" "Political Involvement;" Prison Reform;" and lastly, "Writings by James Wood." Howard Haines Brinton and Anna Shipley Cox Brinton were 20th-century Quaker educators and prolific authors whose areas of expertise included the physical sciences and the Classics. Notably, they also worked for the American Friends Service Committee in Europe, for Friends Center in Tokyo, Japan, and as directors of Pendle Hill, an adult study center in Wallingford, PA. They were both recorded ministers in the Religious Society of Friends. This collection also contains materials of other Brinton, Bean, Cox and Shipley Family members.

Abstract:
Stephen G. Cary graduated from Germantown Friends School in 1933 and from Haverford College in 1937. He earned a master's degree in international administration from Columbia University in 1943. Between 1946 and 1969, Cary worked for the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), and was the chairman of the AFSC from 1979 to 1991. Cary was a member of the Haverford College Board of Managers from 1955 to 1969. In 1969, he joined the staff as vice president of development. He was acting president of Haverford from 1977 to 1978, and served as senior vice president of the College from 1979 to 1981. This is a collection of his professional and personal papers. Materials include documents related to the American Friends Service Committee, Haverford College, and the Clarence and Lilly Pickett Endowment for Quaker Leadership. The first dairy, entitled "Haverford Reconstruction Unit No. 1," describes the work of emergency relief in France beginning with the departure of Dr. Babbitt and 54 men from Haverford College in August, 1917, and through the establishment and operation of Hôpital du Chateau (Chateau Hospital) in Sermaize-les-Bains, Marne, France. Includes letters (1918-1919) by Dr. Babbitt in France to his patients expressing interest in their condition, and letters (1917-1918 + undated) from his patients, primarily thanking him for his help and reporting on their conditions. Wilmer J. Young (1887-1983), a Quaker teacher and peace activist born in Iowa, was involved in post World War I reconstruction in France and Poland. The collection contains primarily journals and correspondence from his time in France.

Morris-Shinn-Maier collection, 1720-1975 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection spans approximately 200 years, from the late 1700s to the late 1900s, and five generations of the Morris-Shinn-Maier family, which are traced through matrilineal and patrilineal lines. They were prominent Quaker businessmen and lawyers in the Philadelphia area, and a large portion of the collection is dedicated to their legal and business material, as well as a great deal of very detailed financial material. There is also a quantity of personal material, namely diaries and correspondence, and material from philanthropic work done by later generations. Principal individuals include Paul David Irwin Maier, William Morris Maier, Anna Shinn Maier, Levi Morris and Naomi McClenachan Morris. A genealogical chart done by a Haverford student while processing the collection has been printed out and is included in the box 1191 (ovs).

This collection traces several generations of the Quaker Taylor family, but centers on Francis R. Taylor (1884-1947) and George Washington Taylor (1803-1891). The former was an attorney and collector of information about his own and related families, as well as local historical information. The latter, who ran a free produce store in Philadelphia in the period before the American Civil War, was connected through his interests in free labor to many correspondents.

The Sarah Wistar Rhoads family papers indicate strong relationships and family ties that spanned the 19th and 20th centuries. Sarah Wistar Rhoads (1839-1920) married William Gibbons Rhoads (1838-1880) on November 28, 1866. At that time, the Rhoads, Gibbons and Wistar families began corresponding, the result being an outstanding collection illustrating family support, friendship and love. These papers include correspondence, financial records, diaries and journals, memorabilia, classwork and notes, copied poems, prayers, sermons and verses, memorials, genealogical research, Quaker material and photographs. Abstract:
Douglas and Dorothy Steere were prominent figures of the Quaker movement in the twentieth century, and deeply committed to the causes of peace and spiritual enrichment. This commitment is evident in their involvement with Quaker-led relief work after World War II, Quaker spiritual retreats, international diplomacy, and Dorothy's work with the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. Douglas taught philosophy at several institutions including Haverford College, and published extensively on topics in Quaker philosophy and history. This collection contains considerable material related to Douglas's work as a writer, professor, and diplomat. Given his role as a distinguished figure within 20th century Quakerism, this material is also relevant to researchers interested in recent Quaker history as a whole. There is also some fascinating material produced and collected by Dorothy related to the Civil Rights movement, including a letter from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Abstract:
The Sarah Cooper Tatum Hilles family papers house the correspondence of a Quaker family who lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Woodbury, New Jersey; Wilmington, Delaware; and other surrounding areas from approximately 1840 to 1882. A majority of the letters were written to or by Sarah Cooper Tatum Hilles; her husband, John Smith Hilles; and other Tatum or Hilles family members. There is a small sampling of assorted family papers, dating from 1825 to 1901. Included, among other items, are school report cards of William Samuel Hilles from Haverford College and an 1834 memoir of Anne Cooper Tatum, Sarah Hilles' mother. In addition, there are deeds to properties owned by the Hilles family in Delaware, New Jersey, Illinois and Pennsylvania from 1791 to 1886.

The manuscript of Rufus M. Jones, entitled "The Trail of Life in the Middle Years," is the third volume in an autobiographical series, of which the two preceding volumes are: "Finding the Trail of Life" and "The Trail of Life in College." The narrative begins in the year 1893, when Jones became the editor of "The Friends Review" and began teaching philosophy at Haverford College. In it, he discusses the state of the Society of Friends at the time, and discusses his personal reconciliation of past Quaker separations, particularly during his time as the editor of "The Friends Review."

Ann Morrissett Davidon and William C. Davidon Papers, 1949- (inclusive)

Abstract:
Ann Morrissett Davidon (1925-2004), was a writer, editor, educator, pacifist and peace activist through her entire life. William Cooper Davidon(1927- 2013), was a professor of physics at Haverford College and (retired 1994), pacifist, peace activist. The two were married in 1963 and both continued to be very active in peace, pacifist, anti-Vietnam War, and social justice organizations. They advocated and practiced war-tax resistance. In 1971, William Davidon was named an "unindicted co-conspirator" in a plot to kidnap Henry Kissenger. Ann Davidon remained active in peace issues for her entire life.

Wistar Family papers, 1861-1950 (inclusive) 1861-1900 (bulk)

Abstract:
This collection contains letters and cards exchanged between various family members, including Elizabeth (Bettina) Vaux Wistar, Mary Emlen Wistar, and Frederic Vaux Wistar. Many of the letters were sent from Europe between 1893 and 1894. There is also an assortment of financial and legal papers. The section "Travel and Sightseeing Materials" is particularly noteworthy. It contains a journal written by Emma F. Wistar in which she recounts her 1866 trip to Niagara Falls, making special note of botanical specimens, including dried plant and flower samples. Additionally, there is a brief account by B.V. Wistar about his experience at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. The collection contains formal photographs taken by Philadelphia photography studios.
