Abstract:
William Watts Hart Davis was graduated from military school in Norwich, Vt., in 1842, was professor at Portsmouth (Va.) Military Academy, studied law, was an officer in the Mexican War, returned home to Doylestown and practiced law, was appointed to various government offices for the territory of New Mexico, 1853-1857, returned home where he purchased the Doylestown "Democrat," recruited the 104th Pennsylvania Regiment, and served through the Civil War, returned home to spend the rest of his life managing and editing the Democrat, and speaking and writing on historical subjects. Davis's papers are arranged into several volumes. His incoming correspondence, 1832-1846, 1857-1860, 1880-1882, from family and friends touches on all his activities, with many passing references to politics, although the content is primarily of personal affairs. Abstract:
Dr. Susan Parry was born December 10, 1826, to Charles Parry (1785-1842) and Phebe Fell (1807-1872) in Buckingham Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Susan Parry was raised as a Quaker member of the Society of Friends, and she taught in Lumberville, Pennsylvania, at the Lumberville School in the late 1840s. In 1858, she graduated from the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania (renamed the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania around 1867), the first medical school in the world established to train women and offer them the M.D., which was founded in 1850. While finishing up medical school she wrote a thesis “A Disquisition on Hygiene.” She practiced medicine in Bucks County until she died in Doylestown, Pennsylvania on February 12, 1890, at the age of 63.

E. D. Buckman genealogical collection on the Buckman and allied families, circa 1850-circa 1892, undated

Abstract:
This collection, compiled mostly by Edwin D. Buckman of Philadelphia, contains genealogical records pertaining to the Buckman family of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and many related families, such as the Blakers, Burgesses, and Hestons. The majority of the material consists of handwritten notes which trace the family from its roots in England and Edward Buckman (1623-1670), a Quaker of Sussex County. The Buckmans eventually settled near Newtown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, approximately thirty miles north of Philadelphia. This collection consists of forty-seven volumes, all in modern library bindings. The volumes’ contents vary from histories of the Buckmans to papers on related families to abstracts of minutes from Friends' meetings. There are also notes and charts on the Buckman family by generation, newspaper clippings, and a few family papers such as deeds and correspondence. A few of the volumes contain indexes of other volumes.

During the Civil War, over 1,000 men from Bucks County, PA joined what would be known as the 104th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The soldiers received training at Camp Lacey in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and saw action along the East Coast, including the Battle of Fair Oaks, Virginia (1862). The Bucks County Civil War Round Table Library and Museum collection, 1861-2014 (bulk 1861-1900), consists of various documents relating to the Civil War, with items from soldiers, officers, and veterans. While the focus of the collection is Bucks County, it includes materials from across the nation.

The Dublin Farmers' Cooperative Association, formed in 1921, changed its name to the Dublin Milling Company in 1927. It sold farming supplies, advertising itself as "Dublin Milling Company, Inc., dealers in flour, feeds, grain, seeds and fertilizer." The company was sold to the Farm Bureau Cooperative in the 1980s. The Dublin Milling Company stock and employee records, 1927-1964, consists of: capital stock certificates of the Dublin Milling Company and related documents, such as voting proxy authorizations for stockholders and legal correspondence regarding stock transfers from distributed estates; and weekly time books and social security record books.

Doylestown's historic downtown began to deteriorate in the early 1960s, but the town was revitalized in part due to an architectural preservation movement. Frankenfield family ledgers and school books, 1846-1894 (inclusive)

The first store in Haycock (Bucks County, Pa.), and the only store for the latter half of the 19th century, was the Frankenfield Store. It was built in 1868 by Henry Frankenfield and carried on by family members including M. D. Frankenfield, Abel Frankenfield, John Bergstresser, E. A. Frankenfield, and A. H. Frankenfield. The store ceased operations in the early 1900s, but a post office continued at the location until 1948. The Frankenfield family ledgers and school books, 1846-1894, consist of six ledgers from the Frankenfield store (1890-1894), eight penmanship books from Sarah Frankenfield (circa 1870), and one ciphering book from Sarah Frankenfield's father-in-law, Jeremiah Ott (1846).

Established around the turn of the 18th century, the Langhorne Hotel served the numerous visitors who traveled through the transportation hub of Langhorne (Bucks County, Pa.) on their way between Philadelphia (Pa.) and Trenton (N.J.). Ruth Ehrlen Irwin's father, George G. Ehrlen, owned the Langhorne Hotel from 1905 to 1937. A native of Langhorne, Ruth Ehrlen Irwin worked as a teacher primarily in the Langhorne-Middletown School District. W. Aubrey Merrick (1885-1962), owner of W. Aubrey Merrick, Real Estate and Insurance, was a realtor in Newtown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. His company succeeded the Merrick agency that he inherited from his father, John S. Merrick (1831-1907), and uncle, who were Newtown surveyors and conveyancers. The Merrick company records, 1831-1922, largely consist of bound volumes of property surveys, insurance records, survey maps, and surveying notebooks. Abstract:
The Philadelphia, Newtown and New York Railroad Company, originally incorporated as the Philadelphia and Montgomery County Railroad in 1860, was to provide service between Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Jersey City, New Jersey with easy access to New York. After the company failed, the railway was operated by the Reading Company and Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) until SEPTA terminated service in 1983. Richard N. Mansley manuscript, drawings, and research materials on Philadelphia, Newtown and New York Railroad, circa 1960-2013, covers the history of the railway line from its founding until 1984. The collection includes a typewritten manuscript, The Newtown Railroad Reel, as well as the materials Mansley created and compiled during his research. There are also over 200 scale drawings of the stations, shelters, structures, signs and signals of the railroad that Mansley created.

Newtown, the county seat of Bucks County from 1726 to 1813, is one of the most historic areas in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Although it is unknown when the first school in Newtown was established, public and private schools flourished during the 19th century. In 1946, as mandated by the Commonwealth, Newtown became part of the extensive Council Rock School District. The Newtown Historic Association collection on Newtown schools, 1764-2013 (bulk 1900-2013) consists of records of the School Board, including minute books, account books, and treasurer's records. Sometime prior to 1754, Casper W. Fetter (1726-1779) emigrated from Germany and established a farm in what would become Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. His many descendants, several of whom had strong ties to the Southampton Baptist Church in Southampton, Bucks County, became farmers in Bucks and Montgomery counties during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Fetter family papers, circa 1880s-1984, contain photographs, letters, genealogy research, newspaper clippings, vital records, and other materials that document the Fetter family, its history, and other families, including the Leedom, Montanye, and Lefferts families, whose members married into the Fetter family. There are also materials that document the Southampton Baptist Church. The materials were collected by Claude K. Fetter (1901-1984), a direct descendant of Casper W. Fetter.

Dr. Clyde R. Flory (1892-1963) was a physician based in Sellersville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He served in the U.S. Navy as a navigator in World War I and as a captain and medical officer in World War II. During his wartime service he invented a special traction bar to cut the amount of equipment used to reduce fractures, and also discovered a new technique for the cure of syphilis. The Clyde R. Flory film reels and death certificates, circa 1930-1950, consist of nearly 200 death certificates from the USS Savannah and about one dozen film reels (16mm and 35mm).

Yardley Borough in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, was settled in 1682 by Quaker minister William Yeardley, who purchased a tract of land from William Penn. Opened in 1988, the museum is named for Doylestown's most famous son, the Pulitzer-Prize winning writer James A. Michener. James A. Michener Art Museum Archives photograph and oral history collection on Bucks County (Pa.) artists, circa 1978-1990s, consists of photographs and oral history interviews with Bucks County artists conducted by Bucks County Community College students in 1978, recordings relating to the Bucks County Council for the Arts, and assorted interviews from various Bucks County media personalities that were broadcast on local radio and television stations.

Harry Leith-Ross (1886-1973) was a painter in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He was an influential teacher and author as well as one of the most decorated Pennsylvania Impressionist artists. Leith-Ross became renowned for his vibrant, carefully composed oil paintings, and for his transparent watercolor technique in the tradition of the eighteenth-century. He gained recognition for depicting humble genre scenes of rural life and finding beauty in the everyday activities of people. Herman Silverman (born in 1920) is the founder of Sylvan Pools, the Bucks County, Pennsylvania Artmobile, and advocate for the James A. Michener Art Museum. Silverman was a longtime friend of author James Michener and the two enjoyed lengthy discussions on varied topics. Herman Silverman correspondence, press clippings, and photographs, 1949-1998, is comprised of copies of 538 letters dating from 1949 to 1997, the majority of which are to or from Herman Silverman or James A. Michener. In addition, there is an extensive collection of press clippings pertaining to both Silverman and Michener, photographs, and a 1998 Crystal Quill award presented to Michener by the Philadelphia Writers' Conference.

Michener was known for his extensive research of each location's history, culture, and geology. Michener was a generous philanthropist and donated over one hundred million dollars to various educational programs, arts related institutions, and other organizations. James A. Established in 1926, Fleetwings, Inc. was an aircraft components factory that moved from Long Island, New York to Bristol, Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 1934. Due to the company's success during World War II, Henry J. Kaiser's Kaiser Industries invested in the company and renamed it Kaiser-Fleetwings Corp.; the company folded in 1962. James M. (Jim) Shimer, Jr. (1914-2007) worked there as a technical illustrator. The James M. Shimer Kaiser-Fleetwings papers, 1942-1958, consists of materials relating to James M. Shimer's work as a technical illustrator for Kaiser-Fleetwings. There are a large number of Shimer's drawings of aircrafts, blueprints, technical specifications, photographs of aircraft and of models, and promotional brochures for the aircraft, as well as some of Shimer's employment records and various employee newsletters and publications.

Joseph Edward Pavone (1928-2010) was an artist and prominent figure in the cultural and heritage community of Bristol, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Abstract:
On March 1, 1901, Mrs. Emlen Martin organized the Travel Club of Bristol, Pennsylvania with sixteen charter members. The initial mission of the Travel Club was "the general improvement of its members in history, literature, art, and the vital interests of the day," but its objective soon changed to include its desire to be more service oriented toward the community. Throughout its existence, the Travel Club of Bristol supported various organizations, including the Bristol Junior-Senior High School, Washington Crossing Foundation, and Lower Bucks Hospital. In 1995, due to low membership, the group voted to disband the Travel Club and donate its remaining funds. The Travel Club of Bristol (Pa.) records, 1901-1995, document the group’s history and activities through financial and administrative records, scrapbooks, and various other materials such as correspondence, photographs, and ephemera.

Charles Savidge (1835-1908) married Sarah Hutchinson Morris (1864-1914), with whom he had two children: Morris Savidge (1895-1979) and Clarence Savidge (1900-1986). The family lived in Newtown (Bucks County, Pennsylvania), where they owned and operated Savidge Brothers retail store for over a century. The Savidge family papers, circa 1875-1970, consist mostly of personal papers, particularly relating to Morris and Clarence. The collection includes letters from Morris to his brother while the former was in military training and active duty in France during World War I as well as related photographs. Other materials in the collection include an album of funeral cards and calling cards/invitations, family photo albums, and some correspondence, financial papers, and ephemera relating to other family members.

Later on, the company expanded into the specialty food market. The Wagner family sold the business in 1950 and it changed hands a few more times until 2000, when it was purchased by Williams Foods, Inc., which as of 2014, still sells Wagner's brand products. Today the organization owns and operates both Craven Hall, a Federal/Greek Revival home built in stages between 1790 and 1845 that is on the National Register of Historic Places, and the John Fitch Steamboat Museum, dedicated to the inventor of the world's first commercial steamboat. The area now known as Doylestown (Bucks County, Pennsylvania) was given to Edward Doyle as a land grant from William Penn in 1692. Doylestown became the county seat of Bucks County in 1812, and the area flourished when a railroad line was completed between Doylestown and Philadelphia in 1856. Doylestown's historic downtown began to deteriorate in the early 1960s, but the town was revitalized in part due to an architectural preservation movement. The Doylestown Historical Society oral histories, 1995-2012, consist of several dozen oral history video interviews with prominent residents of Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Of special interest are an interview with author James Michener and an interview with a friend of James Michener about the author.

Students were transferred to Central Bucks West High School (originally Central Bucks Joint High School), which opened the following year. The Doylestown Historical Society collection on Doylestown and Central Bucks West high schools, 1913-2013, contains chronological files about class years, as well as some historical information about each school. It consists primarily of clippings, programs/ephemera, and a few photographs; there is also a Doylestown High School cash ledger, 1941-1947. The Society also holds a collection of original yearbooks (and some copies of older yearbooks) for both schools, 1916-2012.
