Overview and metadata sections

Organized in November 1895 and federated the following year, the Newtown New Century Club was a literary club that began with over 30 members. Three of its organizers were Lavinia Blackfan, Anna M. Maris, and M. Anna Smith. The Club modeled itself off of the New Century Club of Wilmington, Delaware, inviting members of that organization to meet in order to explain how the Wilmington club functioned. At meetings, members presented papers and literary works. The Club was also involved in civic affairs and community service.

The collection consists of minute books, 1895-1975; treasurer's books, 1895-1941; membership books, 1895-1918; printed annual programs, 1899-1993; scrapbooks, 1932-1934; and essays written by the members of the club, usually about the history of Newtown often printed in the newspaper. Also included are financial statements, legal papers, correspondence with the Pennsylvania Federation of Women's Clubs; and lists of officers.

The collection also includes press clippings scrapbooks, 1963-1965, of the Junior New Century Club.

An item-level inventory for this collection is available in a database on-site.

Annual programs gift of Mary and David Callahan, 2004.

Summary descriptive information on this collection was compiled in 2012-2014 as part of a project conducted by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to make better known and more accessible the largely hidden collections of small, primarily volunteer run repositories in the Philadelphia area. The Hidden Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archival Repositories (HCI-PSAR) was funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

This is a preliminary finding aid. No physical processing, rehousing, reorganizing, or folder listing was accomplished during the HCI-PSAR project.

Detailed, computerized inventories of all of the items in this collection are available on site at the repository where this collection is held; please contact Newtown Historic Association directly for more information.
