Overview and metadata sections

W. Aubrey Merrick (1885-1962), son of John S. Merrick (1831-1907) and Sarah E. Watson (b. 1842), was a realtor in Newtown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. John S. Merrick and his brother were surveyors and conveyancers who established a company in Newtown. Pioneers in introducing stock company fire insurance in Bucks County, their company also served as agent for the Great American Insurance Company beginning around 1884. The successor to that agency was established by John's son, W. Aubrey Merrick, Real Estate and Insurance, in 1908. W. Aubrey continued the relationship with Great American after he took over the Merrick company, and also offered full real estate service and dealt in all forms of insurance with the exception of life underwriting. Under his direction the company grew markedly.

Very active in public affairs, W. Aubrey Merrick held two public offices in Newtown, treasurer and engineer, for over 25 years. He was also a member of several fraternal organizations, including the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Free and Accepted Masons.

Summary descriptive information on this collection was compiled in 2012-2014 as part of a project conducted by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to make better known and more accessible the largely hidden collections of small, primarily volunteer run repositories in the Philadelphia area. The Hidden Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archival Repositories (HCI-PSAR) was funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

This is a preliminary finding aid. No physical processing, rehousing, reorganizing, or folder listing was accomplished during the HCI-PSAR project.

Detailed, computerized inventories of all of the items in this collection are available on site at the repository where this collection is held; please contact Newtown Historic Association directly for more information.
