Eadweard Muybridge Collection, 1870-1981 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Eadweard Muybridge is a noted photographer who began his studies of animal locomotion in 1872 while trying to settle a bet for railroad tycoon Leland Stanford. In 1883 several important Philadelphians attended a meeting in the office of the provost of the University of Pennsylvania, and decided to provide Muybridge with the grounds of the Veterinary Hospital and a $5,000 advance to begin work on the landmark study, Animal Locomotion. This study, completed in 1887 and published under the sponsorship of the University, would prove to be of great use to artists, anatomists, physiologists, and athletes. The Eadweard Muybridge Collection documents his photographic career and the contributions he made to motion pictures. Documentation relating Muybridge's Animal Locomotion study, done under the auspices of the University of Pennsylvania, represents the bulk of this collection.

Abstract:
Charles Custis Harrison was Provost at the University of Pennsylvania 1894-1910, a time of expansive growth for the University, especially in the number of buildings added to the campus. Using his extensive personal contacts from his business and political associates, Harrison raised funds (making large contributions himself) for dormitories as well as Houston Hall, the University Museum, the Medical Laboratory, the Law, Engineering, and Dental School buildings from the wealthy of Philadelphia society. The Charles Custis Harrison Files of the Office of the Provost Records document his activities as Provost of the University of Pennsylvania and as Vice President and President of the Board of Directors of the University Museum. This collection though part of the Office of the Provost Records, includes material from almost all aspects of Harrison's career with the University of Pennsylvania.

The Zelosophic Society was formed in October 1829 as a response to the Philomathean Society, an exclusive literary society formed on campus in 1813. School of Veterinary Medicine Records, 1832-1991 (inclusive) 1877-1991 (bulk)

Abstract:
One of the oldest of its kind in North America, the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania is the only veterinary school in the United States that was a direct outgrowth of the University's School of Medicine. It was founded in 1882 when University Trustee Joshua Bertram Lippincott donated $10,000 for the purpose of establishing veterinary school within the University. The Historical Material series records the school in its formative stage. It features minute books for the Board of Managers, 1889-1954, for the faculty, 1909-1963, and for alumni societies, 1901-1960. The Administration series constitutes the bulk of the collection. Included in it are a biographical data file of faculty members and prominent alumni.

Thomas Mackie Smith attended the University of Pennsylvania and earned the degrees of A.B. in 1828 and M.D. in 1831. He served as a resident physician in the Philadelphia Almshouse. The Papers series (1826-1847) contains documents relating to Smith's attendance at the University of Pennsylvania, including lecture tickets, a commencement announcement, a commencement program and a registrar's bill.

In the fall of 1913 John Hess Foster entered the Medical School of the University of Pennsylvania and received his M.D. degree in 1917. The majority of the scrapbook is devoted to Foster's time at the University of Pennsylvania as a medical student and details not only the various social activities, such as the fraternity, student association, and athletic events, that he attended but also his medical work at the University Settlement House of the Christian Association and the Southeastern Dispensary for Women.

Abstract:
Herman Beerman (1901-1995) received his B.A. in 1923, his M.D. in 1927, and his Sc.D. in 1935 all from the University of Pennsylvania. He served an internship at the Mt. Sinai Hospital and his residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania before his appointment in the both the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine Department of Dermatology. The papers consist of correspondence, 1923, 1965-1978; copies of his curriculum vitae; information on the dinner held in his honor by the History of Dermatology Society in 1981; clippings; photographic prints; and other miscellaneous papers.

Jerry Donohue was Professor of Chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania from 1966 to 1985. He earned his Ph.D. in 1947 at the California Institute of Technology where he remained until 1952 when he received a Guggenheim Fellowship to study at Cambridge where Francis Crick and John D. Watson, pioneers of DNA research. The papers of Jerry Donohue, with the exception of a small group of personal papers, represent the professional and academic career of a leading scientist in the field of chemistry and the study of crystallography. The bulk of the collection begins with his arrival at the University of Pennsylvania in 1966.

Louis Joseph Meyer entered St. Charles Seminary in Overbrook, Pennsylvania and was ordained a priest in the Roman Catholic Church in 1923. The Louis Joseph Meyer Papers document his services as military chaplain with the 20th General Hospital in India during Wolrd War II.

William Martin graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1786, and established a practice in Georgetown, VA. Three years later he returned to Chester, PA where he continued his medical career. The documents include legal cases, medical observations, correspondence, speeches, and literary extracts in Martin's handwriting.

The University Library dates to 1749 with a gift of books from Richard Jackson, a London lawyer and politician. Within a few years, Benjamin Franklin and William Smith donated additional volumes. William Ezra Lingelbach was a well-known and highly regarded figure at the University of Pennsylvania as a faculty member of the Department of History.
