In the School of Medicine, the Executive Committee of the Executive Board focused on matters related to the operations of the school and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. This was linked to activities overseen by the Vice President for Medical Affairs. The Faculty Council in the School of Medicine was focused on matters related to academic appointments, student behavior, and admissions. Over the years, committees and other advisory bodies proliferated, with an Executive Committee on the Faculty, a Medical Council, a personnel committee, and various committees and subcommittees that were tasked with studying financial and space planning topics.
The School of Medicine Committee Minutes documents the activities of numerous committees and subcommittees from 1931 to 1989.
The Executive Board series records activities from 1931 to 1943 and is comprised of executive committee minutes relating to grants, funding, budget, financial reports, appointments, and reappointments as reported by the Vice President of Medical Affairs, Alfred Stengel (1931-1939), and Alfred Newton Richards (1939-1948).
The Faculty Council series contains material from 1925 to 1952, focusing primarily on the activities of the Executive Committee. These minutes document resignations of faculty from different departments, which include instructor, resident fellow, research fellow, and visiting faculty, along with the stated reason for their resignation. They also document a report on admissions, curricula, appointments, and promotions. This series also contains records for the Administrative Council, ballots, committee minutes on special admissions to Lectures and, applications for Admissions, Memoranda, Committee on Discipline, and a collection of letters related to the John Rhea Barton, Chair of Surgery written to Dr. Francis Heed Adler from 1944 to 1945.
The Committee on Budget materials contain minutes, correspondence, and reports that documents their role to review and advise on the School of Medicine's finances. Topics include tuition, student fees, room and board costs, assets and liabilities, sources of funding, school budget, and salaries, and covers the years 1979 to 1988.
The University Budget Committee minutes are from 1980 and reflect their mandate to offer advice on budgetary policy to the university administration.
The Space Committee materials document the committee's evaluation and recommendation of departmental and laboratory space needs, including renovations and reassignments of existing spaces. The minutes cover the years from 1985 to 1987.
The minutes of the Executive Committee on the Faculty, reflect the discussions and views of the faculty of the School of Medicine and/or Division of Graduate Medicine on, on topics of interest, covering the years 1968 to 1969.
The Medical Council minutes cover the years 1964 to 1967, and reflect their charge to advise the Dean of the School of Medicine on various policies, such as student affairs, admissions, financial policies, fund raising, alumni relations, academic programs, research activities, professorships, awards, the physical plant, facilities, and hospital relationships.
The Subcommittee on Educational Facilities minutes reflect their work to evaluate and make recommendations to the Long Range Planning Committee on the use of departmental and laboratory space, from 1983 to 1989.
The Long Range Planning Committee minutes reflect their role as an advisory body to the Dean of the School of Medicine for the planning and development of new programs and resources, as well as in the promotion of expertise in various subject areas through the formation of subcommittees. The minutes cover the years 1981 to 1985.
The Personnel Committee minutes document their consideration of appointments and promotions from 1966 to 1970, as well as addressing related problems and policies.
The Subcommittee on Medical School Finance minutes reflect their role as the principal advisory body to the Long Range Planning Committee on the financial affairs of the School of Medicine. The minutes cover the years 1976 to 1988.
The final series, Other Minutes, contains content from 1851 to 1952, and includes rough minutes of medical faculty from the nineteenth century, minutes of the committee on the dedication of the new medical laboratories, and advisory meeting minutes.
The School of Medicine Committee Minutes are organized into twelve series: Executive Board, Faculty Council, Committee on Budget, University Budget Committee, Space Committee, Executive Committee of the Faculty, Medical Council, Subcommittee on Educational Facilities, Long Range Planning Committee, Personnel Committee, Subcommittee on Medical School Finance, and Other Minutes. The Executive Board, Faculty Council and Other Minutes are arranged alphabetically, while the remaining series are arranged chronologically.
