Alexander Kendrick was a journalist, foreign correspondent, author, and radio and television reporter affiliated with The Public Ledger, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS). He is best known for his reporting of international events in World War II and postwar years. The Alexander Kendrick papers comprise radio broadcast and television typescripts, correspondence, contracts, edited book typescripts, book research notes, clippings, long-playing records, and photographs.

Birkinbine Engineering Company records, 1840-1963 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Birkinbine Engineering Company got its start through Henry P. M. Birkinbine. His son, John, gained early engineering experience through various water supply projects in and around Philadelphia; this experience later helped direct the Birkinbine Engineering Company’s involvement in many water-related projects around the country in the late 19th century as part of the improved public sanitation initiatives. The Birkinbine firm also specialized in mining engineering, both in the United States and Mexico. John also had a firm grounding in mechanical engineering through his work in the Weimer Machine Works in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. John’s interest in manufacturing pig iron from charcoal, combined with his knowledge of hydraulics, catalyzed his concern for the condition of forests in Pennsylvania and he became one of the founders of the Pennsylvania Forestry Association. Abstract:
The Olivia Stokes Hatch papers reveal the relief work of women during the early 20th century, as well as family relationships, largely illustrated through extensive family correspondence. Olivia Stokes Hatch (1908-1983) was born in New Haven, CT and attended Bryn Mawr College from 1925 to 1930. Prior to her marriage she was very active with the American Red Cross and American Conferences of Social Work. In 1939, Olivia Phelps Stokes married John Davis Hatch, Jr. an art collector, consultant, and museum director. They had four children: John Davis Hatch III, Daniel Lindley Hatch, James Stokes Hatch, and Sarah Stokes Hatch. Anna V.S. Mitchell, the sister of Caroline Mitchell Phelps Stokes, and the aunt of Olivia Stokes Hatch, spent most of her life engaged in relief work. Her career began in 1915 in Serbia and ended in 1936 in Constantinople. Abstract:
Machteld Johanna Mellink, celebrated archaeologist and professor of archaeology at Bryn Mawr College from 1949 to 1988, was born in Amsterdam, Holland in 1917. She received her BA in 1938 and MA in 1941 from the University of Amsterdam, and her PhD from the University of Utrecht in 1943. The Machteld Mellink papers cover Professor Mellink's academic and archaeological career from the late 1950s to the early 2000s. Included in the collection are her writings and notes, photographs, publications, and a few excavation tools. Researchers interested in her academic career, as well as her work related to excavation sites such as Kızılbel, Tarsus, and Sardis, will find valuable information in this collection. However, this collection does not provide particularly strong insight into archaeological history, nor Professor Mellink's thought process when approaching archaeological issues. Abstract:
Henry Neville Sanders (1869-1943) studied at Edinburgh University, Gottingen, and the University of Toronto prior to joining joined the faculty of Bryn Mawr College in 1902. Sanders remained at Bryn Mawr until his retirement in 1935. Angela Darkow (AB – 1911; MA – 1912; PhD – 1919) studied Greek and Latin at Bryn Mawr College. Aditionally, her sister, Marguerite, received her AB from Bryn Mawr in 1915. The collection consists of correspondence and diaries of Henry Neville Sanders (1869-1943) and Angela Darkow documenting their lives at Bryn Mawr, careers and relationships. A small part of the collection pertains to Marguerite, the Ferris Family, and M. Carey Thomas, president of Bryn Mawr.

Dorothy Burr Thompson (1900 – 2001) was a prominent archaeologist who graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1923. She specialized in Greek terracotta. Burr Thompson and her husband, Homer A. Thompson, were both heavily involved with the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. The collection includes her diaries, personal correspondence, and professional papers. It also includes contains both personal and research related photographs and postcards.

Andrew H. Woods papers, 1885-1956 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Andrew H. Woods (1872 – 1956) became vice president of Canton College in Guangzhou, China in 1899. He maintained his association with Canton Christian College throughout the Boxer Rebellion, or Yihetuan Movement, and the end of the Qing dynasty. Woods moved back and forth between China and the United States with his wife, Fanny Sinclair, who graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1901. In 1929, the couple and their children settled in Iowa. In Iowa, Woods worked as a professor and practitioner of neurology and psychology. Andrew H. Woods' papers include diaries which describe his personal life and professional life in China and in the United States, photographs and postcards, much of Agnes Sinclair's personal correspondence, his articles, and various papers.

Katharine Shepard (1905-1986) attended Bryn Mawr College in the late 1920s and early 1930's, and received degrees in Latin, Classical Archaeology, and Greek. She went on to a career in archaeology, and was employed by the National Gallery of Art. The Katharine Shepard Papers contains letters to and from her family and friends, primarily from her many trips abroad, as well as a few family momentos.

Henrietta Baldwin Sperry papers, 1916-1921 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Henrietta Baldwin Sperry was a student at Bryn Mawr from 1917-1921. This collection consists of approximately 1000 of her letters. Of those letters, most are written by her to her mother about her time applying to and attending Bryn Mawr College (1916-1921). The subjects of the letters include social life at Bryn Mawr, disease quarantines, the college war effort. The collection also contains letters to Henrietta from her friend and admirer, Sheldon Clarke, who wrote to her while he was serving in the 9th Balloon Division during the First World War. The subjects of these letters includes impression of the French and Dutch people, reflection on war, training to be a balloonist, and daily life in the army. The collection also includes letters to Henrietta from her mother and third party correspondence. The subjects in these letters vary, but tend to be largely social news.

Florence Bascom papers, 1883-1938 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Florence Bascom (1862-1945) was a noted American geologist, specializing in petrography. She attended the University of Wisconsin, receiving her BA degree in 1882 and her MA degree in 1884, and was the first woman to be granted a PhD from Johns Hopkins University in 1893. From 1895 to 1928, Bascom taught at Bryn Mawr College, where she established the Geology Department. In 1896, she became the first woman appointed to the United States Geological Survey. The Florence Bascom papers, 1862-1938, offer evidence of Bascom's career as a regarded geologist and petrographer, particularly her tenure with the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The papers allude to many of Bascom's geological interests and projects, but do not seem to offer comprehensive documentation of any. Her work for the USGS is by far the best represented of all her efforts. Mary Garrett family papers, 1874-1915 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Mary Elizabeth Garrett (1854-1915) promoted women's education by founding the Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, Maryland, helping to finance Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and ensuring that women were admitted to the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her family was prominent in Baltimore society, which allowed her to pursue her philanthropic activities. She was an active suffragist and financially helped that cause until her death in 1915. The Mary Garrett family papers houses the business and family papers of the Garrett family. This collection, which dates from 1874 to 1915, consists of correspondence, diaries, notebooks, biographical information, and business and estate records. The large number of family letters suggest a close relationship between its members.

Jacqueline Pascal Morris (later Evans) (1886-1947) graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1908. Following her graduation, she and two cousins, Agnes and Alida, travelled through Europe for three months. Their route took them from Paris into Switzerland, and then down the Italian peninsular. They returned the same way, travelling along the French Riviera before their return from London. This collection contains 26 letters, written to Jacqueline's father over the course of her travels.

The Photo Archives comprises photographs, slides, transparencies, and negatives depicting the history of Bryn Mawr College from 1885 to the early 2000s. The majority of prints are in black-and-white, though there are a few in color from the late 1960s through the 1980s. Older prints range from carte-de-visite, cabinet cards, cyanotypes and some other early photomechanical processes. Photos are organized in three sub-collections: People; Buildings and Campus; and Events and Groups. The sub-collection People contains photos of notable and miscellaneous persons from the College. The Buildings group includes images of past and current campus buildings, including exterior and interior views. The Events and Groups sub-collection comprises events, campus happenings, and student life. There are also portraits of early alumnae, yearbook photographs, Bi-Co news photographs, and images from the Summer School of Women Workers in Industry (SSWWI). Marion Edwards Park (1975-1960) graduated Bryn Mawr College in 1898. After continuing her studies at the University of Chicago, American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Colorado College, and Johns Hopkins University, she earned her PhD in classics from Bryn Mawr College in 1918. As president of Bryn Mawr College (1922-1942), she significantly increased enrollment, broadened the curriculum, and expanded cooperation with Haverford, Swarthmore, and the University of Pennsylvania. The Marion Edwards Park Papers consist mainly of the subject files and correspondence.

Gertrude C. K. Leighton papers, 1930-1982 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Gertrude Leighton was born in Belfast, Ireland. Leighton first came to Bryn Mawr College as a member of the class of 1938 and majored in classical archaeology. In 1940, she was hired by Barnard College as a lecturer in the English Department. She entered law school at Yale in 1942, graduated in 1945. Leighton returned to Bryn Mawr in 1950 as Assistant Professor of Political Science. Later promotions made her full professor and department chairman. The collection consists mainly of office materials. There are syllabi and reading lists for BMC political science courses taught. There are miscellaneous materials from senior conferences, the journal club, and special conferences. Boxes 2, 3, and 4 contain typed drafts for an unpublished fifteen-chapter book Leighton was writing in collaboration with Richard G. Lonsdorf.

Born in Germany, Emmy Noether was a distinguished mathematician who immigrated to the United States as a refugee Jewish scholar in the 1930s where she took a teaching position at Bryn Mawr College. During the 1934-1935 academic year Noether taught one graduate level course in Algebra in the department of mathematics. Noether died suddenly in 1935 at the Bryn Mawr Hospital. The collection consists mainly of material written about Noether and memorializing Noether.

Born in Bloomington, Indiana in 1884, Mary Hamilton Swindler graduated from the University of Indiana in 1905 and received her master's degree from the same university in 1906. Swindler first came to Bryn Mawr College in 1906 as a graduate scholar in Greek. From 1912 until 1949 she taught Archaeology and Classics at the college. The collection consists of loose correspondence received from the Archaeology Department, scrapbooks and notebooks, miscellaneous correspondence and manuscript drafts.

Mary C. Davidow collection of research materials on the life and career of Charlotte Mew (1869-1928), 1869-1928 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Charlotte Mary Mew (15 November 1869 – 24 March 1928) was an English poet. She contributed a number of short stories to the Temple Bar as well as the Yellow Book. She is best known for her book of poems The Farmer's Bride, published by Harold Monro's Poetry Bookshop in 1916. She committed suicide while depressed. These materials were collected by Mary C. Davidow in the process of writing her Ph.D. dissertation at Brown University (1960) on the life and work of Charlotte Mew. The collection includes correspondence, miscellaneous notes, and over 100 photocopies of letters written by Mew to Hardy, Cockerell, Alida Monro, May Sinclair, and others.

Laura Elizabeth Knipe (1932-2010) was a graduate of Bryn Mawr College (Class of 1953). Throughout her time as an undergraduate she produced numerous cartoon drawings based on her and her friends' experiences as Bryn Mawr students. Many of her witty cartoons good naturedly mock their own study habits, life in the Rockefeller Dorm, academics, particularly the Anthropology and Geology departments, and their social antics and misadventures. This collection, donated to Bryn Mawr College by one of Knipe's closest Bryn Mawr friends, Eula Wulfjen Harmon Hoff (Class of 1952), is comprised of over 100 of Knipe's drawings, including drafts and copies. Hoff has also provided commentary on the categorically organized drawings.

Martha Johnson and Doris Thompson owned and operated the Francis Scott Key Bookshop and Johnson & Thompson Literary Agency in Georgetown. During Johnson's many years as a bookseller and literary agent, she met and corresponded with a large number of authors, public officials, editors, and publishers. Additionally, Johnson opened operated a literacy agency along with her friend Doris Thompson. Together they represented many authors including Anne Malcolmson, Elizabeth Kirtland, John Patterson, etc. The collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, other papers, and photographs related to Johnson's and Thompson's businesses as well as Johnson's personal life.

Mary Ritter Beard (1876-1958) was an historian and a campaigner for women's suffrage and Ethel B. Weed was a lieutenant in the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces Civil Information and Education Office in Japan. Beard and Weed corresponded, with Weed providing research assistance to Beard for a proposed book on Japanese women's history and Beard providing advice to Weed regarding her activties with the Civil Information and Education Office. The collection consists of documentation regarding the activities of women in politics in Japan after World War II including reports from the General Headquarters of the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, election results, documentaion of activities of politicians in the form of reports and newspaper articles, and statements and interviews from Japanese women on the subject of women's involvement in politics.

Abstract:
Helen Calder Robertson (1894-1982) was a member of the Class of 1916 who took her A.B. in French and Modern History. The Helen C. Robertson letters contain the personal correspondence of Helen Robertson. The collection, which ranges from 1913-1916, primarily consists of Robertson's correspondence during her time at Bryn Mawr. These letters were donated to the Archives by Margaret Gilman McKenna, A.B. 1942, whose mother, Margaret Williams Gilman, A.B. 1914, was a close friend of Robertson's.

Abstract:
Louise Congdon spent her freshman year at Northwestern University, and graduated from Bryn Mawr wtih mahors in both French and Latin. She later moved to La Jolla, California, and in 1926 founded what is now La Jolla County Day School. The Louise Congdon scrapbook houses the Congdon's college scrapbook. The scrapbook covers the years 1904-1908, and contains characteristic Bryn Mawr memorabilia: programs, invitations, BMC-related clippings, some SGA-related materials, etc.

Rebecca Fordyce Gayton attended Bryn Mawr from 1912-1916. She received her AB in Psychology and Politics and Economics. She died in 1964. The Rebecca Fordyce (Gayton) scrapbook contains Fordyce's scrapbook. The scrapbook details Fordyce's years at Bryn Mawr, from 1912 to 1916, with the bulk of the material being from 1912 to 1913.

Jessie Gilroy (Warneke) scrapbook, volume 1: 1906-1910 volume 2: 1908-1910 (inclusive)

Jessie Gilroy majored in French and Greek, graduating from Bryn Mawr in 1909. She was a painter, and exhibited in several galleries throughout the United States. In 1927, she married the esteemed sculptor Heinz Warneke. She died in 1982. The Jessie Gilroy scrapbook houses Gilroy's two-volume scrapbook. Volume 1 consists of material from 1906-1910, is primarily photographs, while Volume 2 consists of material from 1908-1910, and contains a great deal of personal memorabilia.
