Abstract:

The Lea Luboshutz class yearbooks document the experiences of Luboshutz's violin students at the Curtis Institute of Music during the 1929-30 schoolyear.

Renowned concert violinist Lea Luboshutz was born in Odessa, Ukraine in 1885. A child prodigy, she studied with such esteemed violinists as Emil Mlynarski and Eugene Ysaye before leaving the Ukraine in 1921. She toured in Russia and Europe as a soloist and member of the Luboshutz Trio (with her brother Pierre, a pianist, and sister Anna, a cellist), as well as with pianist Josef Hofmann from 1924. Three years later, after settling in the United States, Luboschutz was appointed to the violin faculty at the Curtis Institute by Hofmann, Curtis' new director. She would hold this position until 1947.

Though never married, Luboshutz had three children with Onassim Goldovsky (1865-1922). Two children also emigrated to the United States, including opera producer and conductor Boris Goldovsky. Luboschutz died in 1965 at the age of 80.

The scrapbooks include letters from Ms. Luboshutz, students, Curtis staff members, and visitors as well as recital programs, and a repertoire list. In addition to a class photo, both copies include original colored pen-and-ink drawings of Lubshutz's teaching studio by William Strasser.
