Henry Charles Lea research collection on the Inquisition, circa 1875-1909 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Henry Charles Lea's extensive research on the Inquisition produced works of such breadth and detail that they continue to be essential references for contemporary researchers. Lea's general level of mastery of archives from all over Europe and his ability to read source material in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, French, Italian, and German, make it difficult for subsequent scholarship to rival that in his works, published over a hundred years ago. This collection contains copies of the archival material which Lea drew upon heavily in the preparation of his books. These copies, made and sent to Lea from various European archives, were donated to the University of Pennsylvania as part of Lea's library.

H. Ehlers Ahmednagar prisoner of war camp photograph album, circa 1914-1918 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Ahmednagar, a city and fort in India, was the site of one of Great Britain's prisoner of war camps during World War I. This camp held both prisoners of war and German and Austrian civilians from 1914 and 1918. This photograph album, belonging to H. Ehlers, contains 54 photographs that document life at Ahmednagar. The landscape surrounding the camp; the buildings; the inhabitants (both military and civilian prisoners); and the prisoners' pastimes, espeically sports and cultural activities are particularly well represented.

Sammlung Hogarthischer Kupferstiche (William Hogarth images, engraved by Riepenhausen), 1794 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Between 1794 and 1834, the printer Joh. Christ. Dieterich published in Göttingen a set of volumes called Ausfürliche Erklärung der Hogarthischen Kupferstiche. It included included twelve volumes of images by the English painter and egraver William Hogarth, along with popular commentaries on the images written by Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, a local Physics professor. This collection is comprised of nine of the twelve graphic volumes. The plates are "good copies" of Hogarth's originals by the German engraver Ernst Riepenhausen.

Broadside ballads are single sheets of paper printed on one side with song lyrics. These ballads were about love, religion, legends, current events, etc. and were printed and circulated in large quantities. They were popular from the 16th through the 19th centuries in England, Ireland, and North America.

Leo Yanoff was a member of the University of Pennsylvania's Class of 1930. He later went to Harvard Law School where he earned an L.L.B. in 1933 and became a judge of the Essex County (N.J.) Superior Court. These letters were written by Leo Yanoff to his parents between September and November 1927 and document his thoughts during his first months as a freshman at the University of Pennsylvania

Frank Meter was a 1910 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. His papers contain material from the time he was a student as wll as a small amount of material created after he graduated. The papers consist of notebooks, photographs of his Dental School classmates and other unidentified people, two copies of The Penn Dental Journal, a 1910 Dental School yearbook, and two pamphlets from the Psi Omega Dental Society annual banquets in 1909 and 1910.

Padraic Colum (1881-1972) was a poet, playwright, novelist, biographer, and folklorist, known primarily for his collections of myths and folktales for children, his novels Castle Conquer and The Flying Swans, a volume of collected poetry, and several plays. This collection consists of typescript manuscripts of three plays by Padraic Colum: Balloon(circa 1929), Moytura: a play for dancers (circa 1962), and Timbuktu (1957).

Maurice the Maestro Rotenberg record collection, circa 1928-1952 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Maurice Rotenberg (1897-1952) owned Maurice's, an "Old World" style restaurant wired by technicians from Philco to pipe classical music throughout the dining rooms from 1948 until about 1962. Popular with musical celebrities, the restaurant was run for ten years following Rotenberg's death. This collection consists of sixteen recordings that were probably among the 30,000 classical records that were played in the Rotenberg's restaurant.

Architecture Prints Collection, unknown (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection contains a wide range of print materials related to architectural study and illustration. Mostly from the 19th century, these prints were most likely used as illustrations in bound or grouped collections, for study prints of architectural styles, or for leisure as keepsakes or collectable of particular places. Most of the collection contains prints of churches, ruins, and chateaus in Europe (mostly France). Although this is the bulk of the material, there are also a number of blueprints, and prints from America. The prints are mostly lithographs, but there are also several engravings. This collection would be useful for research related to architectural illustration, 19th century tourism, and 19th century print culture.

Francis R. Kirkham Law Clerk papers, circa 1935-1938 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Francis Kirkham (1904-1996) was born in Utah in 1904. After earning his undergraduate and law degrees from George Washington University, Kirkham clerked for two Supreme Court Justices, including former Chief Justice Evan Hughes. During his time as a law clerk, Kirkham drafted a report suggesting revisions to the way people filed for bankruptcy, which was a pertinent issue in the wake of the Great Depression. This report, "Suggested Revisions to the General Orders and Forms of Bankruptcy," was published in 1939. The collection, circa 1935-1939, includes correspondence with Supreme Court Justices, drafts, reports, National Bankruptcy Conference drafts, and related material regarding Kirkham's activity as a Supreme Court law clerk drafting the "General Order and Rules of Bankruptcy," which was published in 1939.

Approximately 60 black and white photographs comprise this collection, documenting the work of Hollingsworth Pearce (1878-1936), Philadelphia designer, metalsmith and engraver. There is also a hand-written inventory of the photographed objects, which are primarily silver or pewter items Pearce crafted for several churches and chapels, such as altar and processional crosses, sanctuary lamps and a baptismal bowl. Tablets, trophy cups and bowls are also illustrated.

Thomas Fisher (1801-1856) was a Quaker poet, a member of the Academy of Natural Sciences, and the author of books on science and mathematics. This collection is comprised of his single volume signature album. The note on the inside cover reads: "The undersigned have examined Mr. Thomas Fisher's Diagrams for Generalizing and Simplifying Mathematical Principles; and believing them to be Novel and useful, subscribe in order to promote their publication." At the back of the volume there is a facsimile list of subscription to the Nonimportation Resolutions.

In Thomas Clarkson's manuscript "The History of the Rise, Progress, and Accomplishment of the Abolition of the African Slave Trade," he describes the Quaker influence in the abolitionist movement in Britain and the parliamentary debates leading to the Slave Trade Act of 1807. The manuscript describes both the arguments in support and in opposition to abolition, and the actions of the members of the abolition movement. Volume 1 contains the early history of the abolition movement until July, 1788, and volume two describes the abolition movement from 1789 to 1808. The manuscript includes edits throughout.

The Frankford neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is located in the lower northeast section of the city and is bordered by the Frankford Creek on the south, Castor Avenue on the west, Cheltenham Avenue on the north, and roughly the I-95 expressway on the east. Originally a village, Frankford was incorporated as a borough in 1800 and was later absorbed into the City of Philadelphia in the 1854 Philadelphia city/county consolidation. As of 2015, Frankford is a working-class neighborhood with a diverse population, including a large number of African Americans, Asian Americans, Polish Americans, Italian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and West Indian Americans. Its mission is to inspire a passion for learning about science and technology. The Historical and Interpretive Collections of The Franklin Institute travel lantern slides collection, late 19th century-early 20th century, consists of images that depict a variety of locations, including several places in the United States, Canada, Europe, Mexico, Chile, Asia, and the Philippines. The images are primarily of scenery and buildings, but subjects such as war vessels, ships, and railroads are also depicted.
