The Historical and Interpretive Collections of The Franklin Institute glass plates and lantern slides collection, late 19th century-early 20th century

Abstract:
Founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1824, in honor of America's first scientist, Benjamin Franklin, The Franklin Institute is one of the oldest and most important science institutes in the nation. Its mission is to inspire a passion for learning about science and technology. The Historical and Interpretive Collections of The Franklin Institute glass plates and lantern slides collection, late 19th century-early 20th century, consists of over two hundred images including children's story slides, travel slides, positive and negative glass plate images of the phases of the moon and an eclipse, and other images. Of special interest in this collection are several glass plate negatives created by artist Thomas Eakins depicting some of his studies of human motion, as well as some glass plate positives from Eadweard Muybridge related to his own studies of motion.

Franz Frederick Exner applied for admission into the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania in the Chemistry Ph.D. program in 1900. The collection includes one photograph album containing 43 photographs. Dating from 1901, the photographs document turn-of-the-Century Philadelphia architecture and public spaces, as well as, significant buildings on the University of Pennsylvania's campus.

Committee to Produce Greek Play Records, 1886 (inclusive)

Abstract:
On May 14 and 15, 1886, a group of seventy Penn students put on Aristophanes' Acharnians, a Greek play set in 425 B.C. satirizing the Peloponnesian War. An audience of nearly three thousand turned out for the performance, which took place at the Philadelphia Academy of Music. This collection provides valuable insight into the 1886 Penn production of The Acharnians.

Elias White Hale attended the University of Pennsylvania Medical School from October 1846 to 1848. His preceptor was Dr. Joseph B. Ard. In 1848, he received his M.D. degree from the University. This collection contains a draft copy of the final essay of Elias White Hale required for his graduation from the School of Medicine. The essay is on the topic of pneumonia. It describes the illness at its various stages.

William M. (William Marshall) Hollenback Papers, 1936-1944, undated (inclusive)

Abstract:
William Marshall Hollenback starred on the varsity football team at the University of Pennsylvania from 1904 – 1908 where he earned All-American honors at the position of fullback. After graduating in 1908 with a degree in Dentistry, Hollenback went on to serve as head coach for Penn State (1909, 1911-1914), the University of Missouri (1910), Pennsylvania Military College (1915) and Syracuse University (1916). Three main scrapbooks, which span the dates [1906] to 1960, are the centerpieces of this collection. Newspaper clippings about Hollenback and the University of Pennsylvania football team's exploits from 1906-1908, including later retrospective articles, comprise the bulk of the material in the scrapbooks.

Miss Leslie's Magazine was a monthly women's magazine of literature and fashion published in Philadelphia from January of 1843 to July of 1846, when it was absorbed by Godey's Lady's Book. This book contains volumes 1 and 2 of Miss Leslie's Magazine, dating from January 1843 to December 1843; each volume contains 6 issues. Eliza Leslie was a Philadelphia-born writer of popular cookbooks, children's stories, and guides for women on domestic life and work. Miss Leslie's Magazine incorporates Leslie's recipes and instructions for maintaining a household with fashion plates, essays, and stories and poems from contributing writers such as N.P. Willis, Lydia H. Sigourney, T. S. Arthur, Park Benjamin, and Miss Leslie.

Nineteenth-century London printers of broadside ballad sheets supplied both traditional and original songs to "hawkers and the trade," as well as selling to customers in their own shops. Most compositions are anonymous (though their authors are sometimes named or identifiable) and they enjoyed a wide audience. This collection contains 49 publications from a variety of printers, including the heirs of John Pitts and James Catnach (Elizabeth Hodges and Anne Ryle, respectively) and Henry P. Such. Researchers interested in nineteenth-century popular song or the London printing trade will find this collection of use.

T. Allston Brown, was a theater critic, newspaper editor, talent agent and theater historian who lived from 1836 to 1918. Brown spent the majority of his adult life in Philadelphia, PA and published extensively on the history of American theater. The collection includes five bound volumes containing handwritten notes and newspaper clippings concerning the history of the American stage from 1749 to 1905. The volumes are organized by geographic location. The first three volumes are respectively focused on Boston, Philadelphia, and New York City. The fourth volume includes information on Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, greater Pennsylvania, New Jersey, greater New York, and Rhode Island. This notebook, which is actually three notebooks bound together, was likely owned by dentist Robert Waller Bragg II, D.D.S. (1872-1956), of Richmond, Virginia. The notebook contains manuscripts or treatises-- possibly speeches or lectures-- on methodology concerning dental crown work. Sections are titled: "Crown Work," "Treatment of Exposed Pulps," "Bridge-Work (Continued)," "Chemistry," and "Preparation of the Mouth for Artificial Dentures." The third volume also includes a section titled, "Condensed Facts Concerning Metals," that features tables of technical information.
